British Open joins U.S. Open in offering direct pathway for LIV golfers

Fox News11-02-2025
The British Open has joined the U.S. Open in offering a direct pathway for players from the breakaway LIV Golf circuit to get into the field for this year's major championship.
The leading player not already exempt in the top five of LIV's individual standings following its tournament in Dallas in late June will be awarded a spot at the world's oldest major taking place at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland the following month, the R&A said Monday.
The decision followed an annual review of the Open's exemptions "to ensure that we offer pathways into the Championship based on results achieved on the leading professional tours," R&A chief executive Mark Darbon said.
The U.S. Open announced last week it was awarding one spot to the leading player from among the top three at LIV's halfway point this year.
"We acknowledge that players competing in LIV Golf should also have the opportunity to secure places in the Open through its individual season standings as well as existing pathways," Darbon said.
"We are proud to offer a wide range of opportunities to qualify globally and look forward to seeing which golfers will emerge to take their place at Royal Portrush in July."

LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil said the R&A's decision was a "true testament to the strength of fields and the R&A's commitment to golf fans around the world."
"LIV will continue our mission to bring the best players to the four corners of the world to grow the game. We are excited for the future of this great sport."
The R&A also is using an Asian Tour International Series event (Macau) as part of its Open Qualifying Series that provides spots for the top finishers. LIV provides financial backing for the International Series, and several LIV players often compete in them.
The R&A took away a spot for the Asian Tour money winner in 2022, about the time LIV got involved in the circuit. The previous two years, regular Asian Tour events were used for the Open Qualifying Series.
The Saudi-controlled LIV circuit already has 12 players who are exempt or have qualified for Portrush on July 17-20, including major champions and past Open winners such as Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith.
LIV began its fourth season last week at Riyadh Golf Club in Saudi Arabia, where Adrian Meronk won, and goes to Australia this week.
There are 14 events in total on its 2025 schedule.

Boeing machinists who build fighter jets reject contract, plan strike

File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI | License Photo July 27 (UPI) -- Several thousand Boeing union workers at three St. Louis-area plants who build fighter jets are planning to go on strike after rejecting a proposed contract Sunday that would pay an average of than $100,000 per year. Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers at Boeing factories in St. Louis and St. Charles in Missouri and Mascoutah in Illinois voted against the new contract that included a 20% wage increase over four years. The contract for District 837 members will expire at 11:59 p.m. CDT at which point there is a seven-day cooling-off period before a strike could start. In all, there are 16,000 employees at the three locations, according to St. Louis Business Journal Research. "IAM Union members delivered a clear message: the proposal from Boeing Defense fell short of addressing the priorities and sacrifices of the skilled IAM Union workforce," the union said in a news release. "Our members are standing together to demand a contract that respects their work and ensures a secure future." Boeing and the union representing the machinists on Thursday reached an agreement on a four-year contract that would boost annual salaries to $102,600 with an 8% increase in the first year and 4% for the other three years. "This contract puts money in members' pockets, protects healthcare access, and ensures our members have a voice in future health decisions all while respecting the skill and dedication IAM workers bring to Boeing's critical defense programs," IAM Union International President Brian Bryant said after the tentative contract. The total increase would be 40% when including other benfits. There was a $5,000 ratification bonus. Boeing said the current average hourly pay of $35 is $6 higher than three years ago. "The IAM Union remains committed to achieving a fair contract that meets the needs of our members," the union said. "The IAM Union looks forward to returning to the bargaining table with Boeing's leadership to deliver meaningful improvements that support the well-being and livelihoods of IAM members and their families." IAM, with approximately 600,000 active and retired workers, is one of North America's largest and most diverse industrial trade unions. They represent workers in aerospace/airlines, defense, shipbuilding, railroads/transit, healthcare and automotive in the United States and Canada. "We're disappointed our employees voted down the richest contract offer we've ever presented to IAM 837 which addressed all their stated priorities," Dan Gillian, Boeing Air Dominance vice President, said in a statement, obtained by KSDK-TV. "We've activated our contingency plan and are focused on preparing for a strike. No talks are scheduled with the union." Last year, Boeing machinists in the Pacific Northwest were in a 54-day strike that shut down airplane production. Ultimately, they agreed to an immediate pay boost of 13% and a total of 44% over four years when compounded. Boeing has more than 170,000 employees worldwide. The vote came two days before Boeing plans to announce its second-quarter earnings.

Niemann lands fifth LIV Golf title of season in UK

LIV Golf UK final leaderboard -17 J Niemann (Chi); -14 B Watson (US); -13 C Surratt (US); -11 Talor Gooch (US) Selected others: -10 J Rahm (Spa); -7 P Casey (Eng), T McKibbin (NI); -5 T Hatton (Eng); -3 R Bland (Eng) Full leaderboard Chile's Joaquin Niemann won the UK leg of the LIV Golf tour for his fifth title of the season. It came after the 26-year-old parted ways with his coach and caddie after missing the cut at the Open earlier this month. Niemann started the final round with a six-shot lead at the JCB Golf and Country Club in Rocester. And a steady round of 68, including five birdies and a bogey, left his rivals with a gap that proved too big to close. Nearest challenger Bubba Watson did make a bold effort as his six-under 65 - featuring a run of four birdies and two eagles on the back nine - threatened to make things interesting. Niemann admitted feeling some pressure before he settled to finish three shots clear on 17 under. "I felt like today I was pretty calm, pretty chill, until Bubba started playing golf," he said. "He made it tough for me. I was actually feeling the pressure on 13, 14, but, yeah, just stay in the present. Yeah, was able to hit a great shot on 15. After that, [it] put me back into my place." American Watson's 14 under was the two-time major winner's best LIV Golf finish. Niemann's success in Staffordshire followed ones in Adelaide, Singapore, Mexico City and Virginia this season as he became the first player to register five wins in a season on the LIV tour. Jon Rahm's Legion XIII won the team event as he, Englishman Tyrrell Hatton, Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin and Caleb Surratt finished with a combined score of 35 under.

After caddie change that 'wasn't my choice,' Kurt Kitayama teams with bro for 3M win

Kurt Kitayama's three-shot victory Sunday at the 3M Open marked his second career PGA Tour win. It was his first alongside his older brother, Daniel. Daniel Kitayama, who has caddied off and on for his brother over the years, picked up the bag for the first time this season at last week's Barracuda Championship, which was Kurt's first event after splitting with his previous caddie, Tim Tucker. And as Tucker worked spot duty for his old boss, Bryson DeChambeau, at this week's LIV U.K. event, Daniel was looping a second straight week for little bro. 'You know, the caddie change wasn't my choice actually,' Kitayama said Sunday evening, 'and so I had to find someone that I knew, I had to find someone that I trusted, and my brother's been on the bag before. We won twice in Europe. He's always been around me at tournaments and whenever he can, so I figured that was going to be the best fit to finish the season.' Kurt Kitayama was T-4 at the John Deere Classic, his last tournament with Tucker on the bag, before tying for 14th in Tahoe. Tucker was filling in for DeChambeau's regular caddie, Greg Bodine, and told Golfweek that after this week, 'I will see what opportunities there are in the caddie world.' DeChambeau was T-11 on Sunday. Said Kurt of Daniel: 'He helped me stay calm out there, make good decisions, and yeah, just helps having family on the bag.' Kitayama's win moved him to No. 53 in FedExCup points, so with one regular-season tournament left, he's guaranteed to qualify for the playoff opener, the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis.
