FAQs
The US government is reportedly taking secretive steps to stop high-end AI chips from ending up in China, as per a report. According to anonymous sources cited by Reuters, federal authorities have been placing hidden location trackers inside certain shipments of AI servers and chips. This measure is part of an investigation targeting shipments suspected of being illegally diverted to China, as per the Tom's Hardware report. These trackers aren't placed on every shipment, but only on those considered 'high risk,' according to the report. Because putting trackers on all shipments would be too costly, authorities focus on targeted shipments believed to be vulnerable, as per the Tom's Hardware report. The devices have been found in shipping containers, inside server packaging, and even built into the racks holding the servers, according to the Tom's Hardware report. Some of these trackers are reportedly as large as smartphones, and have been discovered in equipment from companies like Dell and Super Micro, as per the report. Those involved in smuggling are also aware of the tracking, according to Tom's Hardware. Court documents from a recent smuggling case reveal that suspects have warned each other to watch out for trackers on shipments, as per the report.ALSO READ: French woman sues employer after being paid to do nothing for 20 years, and still got salary Meanwhile, Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has repeatedly denied that the company's most advanced AI chips are making their way to China, even as reports suggest a billion-dollar black market exists for these chips in East Asia, as reported by Tom's Hardware. The US government is keen to slow China's progress in AI because it is considered a 'dual-use technology' that is applicable in both civilian and military purposes, according to the report.Export controls have been placed on the most powerful chips from Nvidia and AMD, with bans on even specific models, especially designed to comply with the initial set of export controls like the Nvidia H20 and AMD MI308, in April 2025, as per the report. While some restrictions have since eased, the most powerful new chips remain off-limits for export to China, according to Tom's Hardware. AMD and Nvidia have even agreed on a deal to share 15% of the sales revenue with the government in exchange for export licenses for their H20 and MI308, as per the report.ALSO READ: Blow to Trump's hopes as he won't like this: Fed's Daly says rate cut unlikely next To prevent high-end AI chips from being illegally diverted to China as part of an ongoing investigation. No, only high-risk shipments are allegedly targeted due to cost and strategic focus.

Sri Aurobindo: Celebrating The 153rd Birth Anniversary Of Master Geostrategist

The unique aspect of Sri Aurobindo is that, despite having grand and lofty visions, he was extremely practical and prescient There are very few yogis who are also geostrategists. Similarly, there are very few darshaniks who are also great politicians. Sri Aurobindo is one of those rare few who lived many lives in one, as Peter Heehs has pointed out in his book The Lives of Sri Aurobindo. Sri Aurobindo was a Renaissance man. He was a linguist, educationist, poet, essayist, translator, literary critic, futurist, internationalist, and, above all, a lover of India and her spiritual truth. We are not used to thinking of Sri Aurobindo as a geostrategist. But he was a great one, as I intend to show here. It is instructive even now, 75 years after he physically left us, to review his key motifs for India's resurgence as the standard bearer of spiritual light and a force in global affairs. Some of his ideas are striking and perhaps need to be followed more closely. Sri Aurobindo stood for the renaissance of India in all her dimensions of existence. His vision encompassed the physical strength and development of her people while also emphasising the intellectual, cultural, educational, social, and political resurgence of her people in their immensely proliferative and creative genius. Above all, he stood for the spiritual awakening of India, which has been her core strength ever since her birth more than 4-5 millennia ago. For this, spiritual awakening is critical to humanity's own evolution and the next age of mankind's future. The unique aspect of Sri Aurobindo is that, despite these grand and lofty visions, he was extremely practical and prescient. For example, he identified the dark force behind Hitler early on, while he was still being appeased by most British and French leaders except Winston Churchill in the 1930s. He also accorded a welcome to Stafford Cripps when he came to India with an offer of Dominion Status in 1942. Perhaps if the other national leaders had paid attention to him, India's partition, along with the slaughter and displacement of millions of her citizens, could have been averted. He advocated India's physical freedom insistently and gave us the programme for Aatmanirbharta at the beginning of the 20th century, which we are awakening to now. One of the most extreme of India's revolutionaries, he yet supported the British during World War II. How do we explain this? The way I understand this paradox is that his key message was the upward evolutionary direction of humanity, and whatever aided that movement was right, strategically appropriate, and dharmic. This is why he opposed the Chinese Communist aggression during the Korean War. In the same spirit, he gave his blessings to a closer alignment of India and the US early on, after India's independence. His dream of a united Europe and the rise of Asia has come to pass. So has his dream of a politically and physically free India. Yet is there more to be done if we are to adhere to his aspiration for his beloved people and nation? First, education. For without an education that stimulates the young minds and pushes them to question and explore life in an original manner, India would never have the brainpower it sorely needs to recover her ancient greatness. Then, discovering her own genius and national soul. Without realising its own svabhava and svadharma, India would always be weak and inauthentic. And this could happen only with a true independence of spirit and self-confidence. If we are to follow his geostrategic guidance, these are the lines we need to follow. First, be strong. Strong in every aspect of human life: physically, culturally, mentally, economically, and finally, spiritually. Second, stand up for dharma. Stand up for the truth and be firm in your adherence. India may need to be diplomatic about this stance until she is truly strong, but this aspect of her USP (unique selling proposition, as they say in management) must gradually become a part of her national discourse. Third, each Indian must have the opportunity to develop and grow to the fullest, without the limitations of race, religion, language, region, or caste. India needs to be deeply spiritual and yet modern in outlook, and must create new forms to express her ancient genius. This thirst is what can truly transform our nation and create a unity that transcends all limitations and barriers. The next decade will be tricky, turbulent, and even dangerous for the nation in its path towards becoming viksit. It is my belief that adherence to his path will not only help India survive but also let it thrive like no other country. Any leadership needs to be judged by these standards and these standards alone. The rest all is transient and superficial in the national and international life of India. August 15 is Sri Aurobindo's birthday. This is also the 75th year of his physical passing. As we remember and invoke his leadership and remind ourselves of his astute pointers in global positioning, it may be worth realising that our work in bringing India to his vision is not fulfilled yet. When we are able to do so, only then can India be a true Vishwaguru and truly viksit. US-China tariff truce holds, ‘unprecedented' deal with Nvidia, and more

On Monday (August 11), US President Donald Trump extended his country's tariff truce with China for an additional 90 days, till November 10. Discussions between senior officials in Stockholm in late July had previously hinted at another extension, even as higher US tariffs have been imposed on several countries of late, including India. However, that doesn't mean all is smooth sailing in China-US trade, and the race for dominating the artificial intelligence domain saw something quite unusual this week. The Financial Times reported that the US government allowed the semiconductor giant Nvidia to sell previously restricted AI chips to China, if they agreed to pay a certain percentage of the sale to the government. Last week, we noted the reports of Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely visiting China next month for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. Now, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to visit India on August 18 for the Special Representative-level talks (the SR mechanism is for discussing border issues) with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The Wall Street Journal also reported this week that Liu Jianchao, a key Chinese diplomat, was picked for questioning by authorities. Then on Friday, Reuters reported that a deputy to Liu, Sun Haiyan, was also detained. We wrote about Liu and what such 'disappearances' say about the Chinese establishment here. Bloomberg also reported that amid the greater bilateral engagements under the recent normalisation in India-China ties, direct flights may be resumed soon. Here is a closer look at these developments: A statement from the White House said that the tariff pause will provide time for 'remedying trade imbalances' and 'unfair trade practices'. 'Each round of negotiations with the Chinese has built on each other… to work toward fair and balanced trade with a key trading partner,' it said. Trump was also quoted as saying, 'We're getting along with China very well.' UPSHOT: An editorial in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) mouthpiece Global Times appreciated the development: 'This shows that China and the US are managing differences and expanding cooperation in an equal, pragmatic and constructive way.' That high tariffs were unsustainable in the long run was clear from the get-go, but many assumptions have been proven wrong. For example, the US has been the one to repeatedly ask China to come to the negotiating table, and China has been the only nation to counter with its own tariffs on the US — indicating both the intention and ability to challenge its actions. Simultaneously, the latest US economic data shows inflation remained moderate, despite the initial fears of American consumers quickly being impacted. There are several reasons for this, like the eventual lowering of tariff rates, but the prevalent view remains that the effects will show at some point. As the GT article noted, 'Data shows that China's exports to the US have declined for four consecutive months.' It would thus make sense for both sides to push for a settlement. Almost exactly a month ago, Nvidia chief Jensen Huang visited China. Around the same time, the company announced it was filing applications 'to sell the NVIDIA H20 GPU again', saying the US government assured it of requisite licenses. Now, Nvidia has agreed to pay the US government 15 percent of the money made from selling H20 chips to China, the FT reported on Monday. Another US chipmaker, AMD, will do the same for its MI308 chip revenues. Altogether, the deal was estimated to bring about $2 billion to the government, The New York Times said. UPSHOT: The US government restricted both these chips in April this year, over concerns that they would help accelerate the pace of AI development in China, and their potential military applications. This was seen as a progression of the Joe Biden-era restrictions on advanced AI chips being sold to China. In fact, the lower-quality H20s were designed to circumvent the directive. Huang had previously argued for allowing the sale, saying it was causing a US company to lose market share and allowing Chinese companies like Huawei to fill the gap. However, critics argued that China would stand to gain a significant strategic advantage with Nvidia products. This is also why the latest deal has been described as 'unprecedented'. Liza Tobin, a China expert who served on the National Security Council in the first Trump administration, told the FT, 'What's next — letting Lockheed Martin sell F-35s to China for a 15 per cent commission?' Notably, China has previously demanded the entry of H20s, but it may be changing its stance now, given its indigenous push to become self-reliant. A state media-affiliated author recently wrote an article criticising the H20. 'When a type of chip is neither environmentally friendly, nor advanced, nor safe, as consumers, we certainly have the option not to buy it,' he wrote. The country's cyberspace regulators also summoned Nvidia officials 'over concerns that its H20 artificial intelligence computing chips could be tracked and turned off remotely'. Wang Yi is set to visit India next week. Separately, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that 'India and China are set to resume direct flight connections as soon as next month', citing people familiar with the negotiations. Flights were first restricted amid the Covid-19 pandemic. UPSHOT: Both developments come amid the larger normalisation process that was officially set in motion last October. It was followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping meeting during the BRICS summit in Russia. Wang's visit is notable for another reason — it's the first high-level official visit by a Chinese leader to India after Operation Sindoor. Notably, Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited China just a few weeks after the conflict with India, where the countries affirmed their 'brotherly' and 'ironclad' relationship. However, India and China also have several outstanding bilateral issues, most importantly concerning the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that serves as the de facto border. The 2020 LAC stand-off also contributed to limited flights and visa approvals, as well as people-to-people exchanges. As The Indian Express earlier reported, in January-October 2024, the total number of flyers (in both directions) between India and China was over 4.60 lakh. This marked a drastic fall from close to a million in the corresponding months of 2019. Beijing also perhaps expects to benefit from a resumption, as Chinese carriers held a dominant share of the direct flight market before the pandemic. However, Air India and IndiGo would also likely want to capitalise on it if resumption happens.
