MetMalaysia to conduct tsunami siren test in Batu Ferringhi tomorrow
In a Facebook post today, MetMalaysia said that the test was part of the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) and will take place from 9am to noon.
"Residents in the surrounding areas are advised not to be alarmed upon hearing the siren, as it is merely a test," the department said.
MetMalaysia added that any changes to the schedule would be announced if necessary. – BERNAMA

Flood victims receiving aid at KDCA on Wednesday. – Bernama photo PENAMPANG (Aug 6): A total of 3,293 heads of household (KIR) affected by the floods in Penampang district between June 30 and July last year have received compassionate aid (Bantuan Wang Ihsan – BWI), disbursed through the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA). Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said that the distribution of aid amounting to over RM3 million is being carried out in stages starting Wednesday until Friday, in collaboration with the Penampang District Council (MPPg), held at the KDCA Hall, Penampang. 'This aid can never fully replace the losses, trauma and exhaustion experienced, but it reflects the commitment of various parties to assist residents affected by the floods. 'It is the result of collaborative efforts across agencies, from leaders to civil servants in numerous ministries, agencies, and departments, to ensure the funds are properly allocated and delivered to the affected households,' he said. He said this when met by reporters after officiating the aid handover ceremony at KDCA Hall on Wednesday. Ewon said several initiatives have been implemented and are ongoing to strengthen disaster management and reduce the impact of flooding in the Penampang district. 'These include the installation of early warning systems in the form of sirens in several frequently affected villages such as Kampung Kodundungan, Nambazan, Penampang Proper, Putaton, Kolopis and Sugud. 'This measure aims to provide earlier alerts to residents to prepare for any eventuality,' he said. He added that 21 buildings, including schools, community halls and churches in high-risk areas, are being proposed for gazettement as temporary evacuation centres. He also stressed the importance of the ongoing flood mitigation projects under Package 1 and Package 3, and stated that follow-up projects are also being planned to support these efforts. At the same time, the Drainage and Irrigation Department, together with MPPg, continues to carry out river and drainage maintenance works as a long-term measure to reduce the risk of recurring floods. 'I hope that with all these efforts, including support from all relevant stakeholders, we can prevent severe flood disasters like those that have occurred in the past,' he said.

The district located 130km north of the state capital Kota Kinabalu has received nine alerts since January. They comprise eight Level 1 Alerts and one Level 2 Alert, according to figures from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia). Limbang in Sarawak received the second highest number of alerts (8) and followed by Machang in Kelantan (6). Six locations each recorded five heat alerts, namely Baling (Kedah), Kampar (Perak), Marudi and Sibu (Sarawak), and Sandakan and Telupid (Sabah). A Level 1 (Yellow) alert is issued when the temperature in a particular location hits between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for at least three consecutive days. A Level 2 (Orange) alert means a location is in a heatwave with temperatures going above 37 but remaining below 40 degrees Celsius. A Level 3 (Red) alert means a location is in an extreme heatwave with a temperature of more than 40 degrees Celsius. MetMalaysia's data shows Sabah topping the list of states with the highest number of alerts this so far year at 35. This was followed by Sarawak (29) and Kedah (17). Last year saw Kedah with the highest number of alerts for January to August at 472, followed by Kelantan (274) and Pahang (188). In total, fewer heat alerts have been issued this year compared to the same period last year. A total of 121 heat alerts have been issued since Jan this year. In comparison, 2024 saw 1,597 alerts from January to August 3. The Star reported on Tuesday (Aug 5) that seven out of the 43 dams in Peninsula Malaysia have reached critical levels, with one at warning level. Authorities have already begun cloud seeding operations at the Bukit Merah dam in Perak, which has seen water levels drop drastically.

Cloud seeding fails to lift dam levels, Kerian Irrigation still halted
IPOH: Irrigation supply to the Kerian Irrigation Scheme remains suspended as Bukit Merah Dam water levels stay at the cut-off point, despite heavy rainfall from a recent cloud seeding operation. State Infrastructure, Energy, Water, and Public Transport committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin said the existing standard operating procedure (SOP) for irrigation from the dam's lake remains in effect, which sets the cut-off level at 20 feet (6.09 metres). "As of 8am today, the water level at the dam recorded an increase from 19.80 feet to 20.00 feet, and the dam's storage capacity also rose from 6.65 million cubic metres (12.2 per cent) to 7.25 million cubic metres (13.31 per cent)," Mohammad Nizar said in a statement today. "However, the dam's current status remains at the Irrigation Supply Cut-off Level as set in the existing SOP. "The increase in dam storage capacity helps somewhat to extend the availability of water for domestic use, but the supply for irrigation to the Kerian Irrigation Scheme still cannot be resumed," he added. The cloud-seeding operation, which was conducted around 12pm yesterday, led to effective rainfall in several catchment areas of the Bukit Merah Dam, with a noticeable increase in inflow at the Pondok Tanjung Station. The dam is located in Bagan Serai. The operation was led by the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) in collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the Royal Malaysian Air Force, and other relevant agencies. Mohammad Nizar said the dam's catchment area has reached the irrigation cut-off level of 20.00 feet since July 22, and based on the dam's operational SOP, the water supply to paddy fields has been temporarily halted to prioritise raw water supply. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who joined the aerial operation alongside senior officials from Nadma and MetMalaysia, said the operation was triggered by severe water shortages affecting surrounding communities and agricultural zones.
