A study has revealed that increasing walking distance and speed can significantly lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes, even without reaching the recommended 10,000 steps daily.
Published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology, the research analysed data from 32,192 people with high blood pressure from the UK Biobank study.
The findings indicate that each additional 1,000 steps taken daily was linked to a 17 per cent reduction in the risk of cardiovascular problems.
Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, who supervised the study, emphasised that any amount of physical activity is beneficial, even below the widely recommended daily step target.
While primarily focusing on people with high blood pressure, the study also found similar cardiovascular benefits for individuals without the condition.

Lucy Letby's hospital trust has been slammed for a string of emergency care failings, including unsafe corridor care that led to elderly patients developing delirium. The Countess of Chester Hosptial, where Lucy Letby worked and was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others, was criticised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) over delays in the care of sepsis patients, as well as elderly patients who were left for so long that they developed 'corridor-induced delirium'. The hospital was also criticised for having 'visibly dirty equipment' and out-of-date medical devices, including some with damaged wires hanging out. The watchdog has handed the trust a formal warning notice over the failures identified after the CQC's inspection in February 2025. Concerns included: Mental health patients being left with staff who were sleeping or on their phones Patients with fractured hips are forced to sit in wheelchairs when they should have had beds Inspectors found 59 incidents of delays to providing sepsis treatment, 44 of which were because the trust failed to take patients from ambulances quickly enough Evidence that 'long stays on the corridor' and the deterioration of patients because of this was 'normalised' The watchdog described the department as 'gridlocked', with patients telling inspectors it was 'as busy as a nearby motorway'. It said: 'Patients were frequently treated in unsuitable and unsafe areas, including corridors, with little privacy.' 'Patients were left on trolleys or in chairs for extended periods, leading to deconditioning and unmet basic needs,' it added. The report found some staff were 'task-focused and lacked compassion'. It also warned about cultural issues within the A&E department and found that some staff did not always feel they could raise concerns or that concerns would be acted on if they did so. In one incident, the CQC's inspectors had to inform the trust's chief executive after they saw a staff member speaking 'discourteously' in front of patients. The comment was described as 'serious and inappropriate'. It also highlighted concerns over the trust's use of an external company to provide staff to monitor mental health patients in A&E, after inspectors found patients were left unattended. Inspectors said: 'We observed a staff member employed by this service using their mobile phone and placing themselves away from the patient behind a door where constant observations could not be maintained for a period of 15 minutes. 'Incident data also showed an incident where ED staff had found the third-party provider staff asleep whilst on continuous observations.' Overall, the report said: 'The service's culture did not ensure staff consistently modelled positive or professional behaviours, with instances of inappropriate behaviour not in line with the trust's vision and strategy.' It stated that the department's leaders 'lacked clarity and consistent visibility' and warned that 'governance and accountability were weak, with repeated failures to address known risks'. 'Staff experiences with raising concerns were mixed.'

A pair of lungs preserved over a century ago from a deceased Spanish flu patient has helped unravel the genetic adaptations undergone by the virus to spread across Europe during the start of the 1918 pandemic. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918-1920 was one of the most devastating pandemics in history, claiming some 20 to 100 million lives worldwide. However, little is known about how the flu virus mutated and adapted throughout the pandemic. Understanding how viruses evolved during past pandemics remains crucial for developing targeted countermeasures for the future, researchers say. Scientists have now reconstructed the first Swiss genome of the influenza virus behind the 1918 pandemic, helping unravel how it spread across Europe during its initial waves of infections. Researchers used an over 100-year-old virus sample taken from a formalin-fixed lung specimen in the Medical Collection of Switzerland's University of Zurich. The virus sample was taken from an 18-year-old patient from Zurich who died during the first wave of the pandemic in Switzerland and underwent an autopsy in July 1918. 'This is the first time we've had access to an influenza genome from the 1918–1920 pandemic in Switzerland. It opens up new insights into the dynamics of how the virus adapted in Europe at the start of the pandemic,' said Verena Schünemann, a co-author of the study from the University of Zurich. Researchers compared the Swiss genome with versions previously published from Germany and North America to find that the Swiss strain already carried three key adaptations to infect and spread among humans that would persist in the virus until the end of the pandemic. Two of these mutations seem to have made the virus more resistant to the human immune system, an important barrier against the transmission of such flu viruses originating from animals. Another mutation of a protein in the virus's membrane improved its ability to bind to entry point receptors in human cells, making it more resilient and infectious. In the study, scientists used a new method with improved ability to recover ancient RNA fragments from specimens. 'Medical collections are an invaluable archive for reconstructing ancient RNA virus genomes. However, the potential of these specimens remains underused,' said Frank Rühli, another author of the study. Researchers hope future studies using the method could lead to a better understanding of how viruses adapt to humans during a pandemic, enabling us to better anticipate and adapt to future pandemics.

Britain will swelter in the fourth heatwave of summer next week with temperatures set to hit 30C (86F) as a new wave of warm weather sweeps in. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a yellow heat health alert for most of England which will run from 12pm on Monday until 6pm on Wednesday. Government officials have warned of 'significant impacts' across health and social care services due to the high temperatures - including the potential for a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions. The latest warning comes after the UK has already experienced three heatwaves this summer. A combination of amber and yellow heat health warnings were issued in England last month when temperatures exceeded 30C in several parts of the country. Anya Gopfert, consultant in public health at the UKHSA, said: 'Our findings show that even moderate heat can lead to serious health outcomes, especially for older adults. It is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun. 'The weather is expected to become warm across several regions from Monday, with conditions likely to persist for a few days. Temperatures may reach, and in some places exceed, 30C. 'If you have friends, family, or neighbours who may be more vulnerable to these conditions, please check in on them. Make sure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.'
