British Open announces 'last-chance qualifier' ahead of 2026 tournament at Royal Birkdale
The R&A announced a series of changes coming to the British Open in 2026, perhaps none more exciting than a winner-take-all "last chance" qualifier.
The Open Championship will be at Royal Birkdale in England next year, and this new qualifier will take place on the Monday of tournament week. You like Monday qualifiers, well, here ya go.
The R&A, in a statement announcing several fan-centric initiatives, said that the qualifier will be held at Royal Birkdale:
The Last-Chance Qualifier on Monday 13 July will generate drama and excitement for fans as up to 12 players chase their dream of playing in The Open by competing over 18 holes of the iconic Southport links to decide who earns the final place in the field ahead of the draw being announced.
The R&A also announced the launch of the Heroes Classic in which several past Open champions and special guests will take part "in a short-format challenge" on Tuesday, July 14.
Ahead of all this, on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the R&A will have fans gather in the spectator village where on several big screens will be the men's final of Wimbledon and the final round of the PGA Tour's Genesis Scottish Open. Many of the British Open participants compete in the Scottish Open.
The R&A says many of these initiatives came about from a fan survey it conducted in which fans said they wanted "more opportunities to watch live golf, celebrate the Championship's unique traditions and enjoy activities which allow them to further engage with the sport onsite."
How to get tickets to the 2026 British Open
Fans interested in getting tickets to the Open need to first create a free account in the digital membership club dubbed One Club. Go to TheOpen.com to do that. Ticket prices range from $40 (£30) for the Sunday, July 12, opening day to $205 (£150) for the Sunday final round in 2026.
There were more than 1.2 million ticket applications filed last year for the 2025 Open.
Ticket applications for the 2026 Open Championship can be submitted until July 25, 2025.

Want to Hit a Stinger Golf Shot? Just 3 Adjustments Make it Easy
Want to Hit a Stinger Golf Shot? Just 3 Adjustments Make it Easy originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's not always necessary to bust out the ol' stinger golf shot — which produces a low-flighted ball with lots of topspin to help avoid uncontrollable factors like the wind — but knowing how to shape golf shots is a skill that can instantly help lower your scores. Advertisement While most stinger shots are associated with links-style courses, like those hosting the Open Championship, it's also a type of shot that can be used as a fairway finder. That's because it removes the risk of hitting a driver by clubbing down to a mid-iron (like a 5-iron), adding some accuracy insurance. But how the heck does someone practice hitting a stinger golf shot? Thanks to golf content creator Dalton Joyce (AKA 'Young Dalt'), you can learn the simple adjustments to develop the technique. 3 Adjustments to Help Hit a Golf Stinger Shot While warming up on the driving range alongside the Rainmakers Golf crew, Joyce shared the three adjustments that he likes to make when practicing the stinger — and he actually uses a club with a smaller clubface to work on his ball-striking. Advertisement As he goes through his pre-shot routine, Joyce reveals his tips for hitting a golf stinger shot. "First, know your ball flight — is it going to fade or is it going to draw?" he asks. Once you identify the ball flight, Joyce says you've got to figure out your backswing and follow through length, ensuring you maintain good speed at the same time. "You're not swinging slower, you're stopping your hands faster," he adds. "I like to control the trajectory just based on where my hands are. So if I want to hit it high, I'm going to climb the ladder with my hands. If I want to hit it low, I'm going to feel as if the club's below my shoulder plane." Advertisement Finally, Joyce says that a big mistake most amateur players make is decelerating in the golf swing, which isn't going to produce this low-running shot. "You've got to punch it," he instructs. "There's no way to make crisp and consistent contact on a shot like this if we're decelerating." So if you're looking to master the golf stinger shot, start by using Dalton Joyce's easy adjustments while practicing on the range. With some repetition and instant feedback from the smaller clubface, you'll be smoking the low-runner in no time. 🎥 Fluminense make history, beat Inter Milan and reach the quarter-finals
Fluminense made history this Monday (30). Playing at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, the Tricolor defeated Inter Milan 2-0 thanks to goals from Germán Cano and Hércules. They are now in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup after several standout performances. Notable contributions came from Thiago Silva, Ignácio, Fábio, and Arias, for example. Advertisement This victory brings in an additional 13 million dollars, approximately R$ 70.9 million, increasing the Brazilian presence among the top eight teams in the world. They have already accumulated R$ 217.5 million in prize money so far. They now await the winner of Manchester City vs. Al-Hilal, who will face each other later this Monday (10 PM Brasília time). Make the double L immediately 🇭🇺 It was a "dream" start for the Tricolor fans. Fluminense came in "fired up," competing and pressing the Nerazzurri team. They took the lead just three minutes in when they didn't give up on the right side, and Cano was lethal, scoring in his 200th game for the Tricolor. Inter began to have more control of the game after falling behind. And they only didn't equalize thanks to Fábio. The sequence saw Fluminense again with more possession - after moments of a more comfortable Inter. Advertisement And they had a good chance with Samuel Xavier. The strategy set up by Renato proved effective once more. The entries of Ignácio and Bernal made Fluminense taller and more combative. Inter, on the other hand, couldn't find their rhythm in the middle and stopped creating well on the flanks - a known strength. They went into halftime owing. Attempts Chivu didn't take long to make the first substitutions. Ensuring fresh legs and more creative power, as the Italian team didn't come back pressing. Jhon Arias only didn't extend the lead due to Sommer's great save. This was followed by intense (and expected) pressure from Inter. Fábio 🆚 Lautaro Until then unable to contribute, Lautaro Martínez became the great fear for the Tricolor. Advertisement He forced Fábio, at 44 years old, into two good saves. He also hit the left post. 🤩 Fluminense is for those who believe Inter's desperation intensified. Leaving Renato's team with the chance to "kill" the game. It was up to Hércules to score the most important goal of his career at 47'. Sealing a historic performance. And a well-deserved qualification. Schedule 📅 Fluminense will face the winner of Manchester City 🆚 Al-Hilal, with the match starting at 10 PM (Brasília time). The quarter-final clash will be next Friday (4th), at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The winner will secure an additional 21 million dollars (R$ 114.5 million) and will face either Palmeiras or Chelsea in the semi-final.
