Chain law enforcement along I-70 ensures commercial vehicles travel safely in Colorado mountains
As of Aug. 7, 2024, Senate Bill 24-100 says commercial law vehicles must carry chains from Sept. 1 to May 31. Troopers with the Colorado State Patrol say straight trucks, single-drive axle combinations, tandem-drive axle combinations, and auto transporters are required to chain four-drive tires. Buses and hot shot trucking are required to chain two-drive tires.
Troopers say without the chains on their vehicles, many drivers could find their tires sliding and lose control. This could cause major backups and in worst-case scenarios, crashes resulting in injury or death.
Troopers say they will focus heavily on I-70, west of Morrison to the Utah border. Other areas include:
Colorado Highway 9, MP 63 to MP 97 (Frisco to Fairplay)
Route 40 west of MP 256 (Empire)
US Route 50 west of MP 225 (Salida)
US Route 160 west of MP 304 (Walsenberg)
US Route 285 west of MP 250 (Morrison)
US Route 550 from MP 0 to 130
If a driver is caught without a chain, they will receive a fine. These include;
$50+ for not carrying
$500+ for not chaining up
$1,000+ for blocking as a result of not chaining up
Troopers say at the end of the day, it is about safety.
"As you know, I-70 around the mountain corridor can show really bad conditions including icy and snowy," Colorado State Trooper Sherri Mendez. "It does make a difference with the drivers' actions as well. This helps with keeping the roadway safe."
Troopers say to expect this enforcement to last until May 31, 2025. Travel will be restricted if the vehicle is unable to be chained.

5 dead, 1 injured after head-on crash, vehicle fires in Grand County: CSP
DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado State Patrol said five people inside an SUV were declared dead after an early Monday morning crash in Grand County after both vehicles caught fire from a head-on crash. The crash happened around 7 a.m. Monday and involved two vehicles, a Ford F-150 and a GMC Yukon, on Colorado 9 in Grand County between Ute Pass Road and Kremmling, according to a CSP press release. The highway was closed for an extended period and reopened on Monday at about 2:45 p.m. FOX31 Newsletters: Sign up to get breaking news sent to your inbox The patrol said the F-150 was traveling north on Highway 9 when it drove into the southbound lane, striking the GMC Yukon head-on, causing both vehicles to catch on fire. The driver of the F-150 was determined to be a 25-year-old man from Parker. He was transported by air to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Yukon was determined to be a 34-year-old man from Kremmling and was pronounced dead at the scene. 'All occupants of the SUV were pronounced dead on the scene,' CSP said. 'Due to the extensive damage and fire to this vehicle, first responders are unable to confirm the number of occupants at this time.' The other four occupants of the Yukon were pronounced dead at the scene and have not been identified. CSP said the investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no charges have been brought against either driver. The Grand County Coroner's Office will identify the proper next of kin for the deceased individuals. CSP is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact CSP dispatch at 970-249-4392 and reference number VC25269. Juvenile survives after car rolls 320 feet down side of Colorado mountain
A juvenile survived a crash in southwestern Colorado where a car went off the highway and rolled approximately 320 feet down the side of a mountain. The crash happened just after 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Colorado State Patrol. Troopers said they responded to the deadly crash on Highway 550 near mile marker 88, located south of Ouray on Red Mountain Pass. According to investigators, the crash involved one vehicle, a silver Honda Civic that traveled off the shoulder of the roadway and rolled approximately 320 feet down the side of the mountain before it came to a stop upside-down in the river. Two adults were deceased on the scene, according to troopers, and one female juvenile passenger was trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency responders said they were able to rescue the juvenile at 11:27 a.m. and she was rushed to the hospital. During the accident investigation and cleanup, the southbound lane of Highway 550 remained closed. There was no timeframe given for the road to reopen. The Colorado State Patrol is asking anyone who witnessed this crash and has not yet spoken to investigators to contact Colorado State Patrol Dispatch at 970-249-4392.

Korean school offers scholarship money for climbing 6 mountains

The Misan Mountain Hiking Scholarship, which accepted applications from July 8-18, offers $216 in scholarship money to students who climb three mountains by the end of the year and $540 to students who climb six. Eligible mountains are those listed in Black Yak's 100 Famous Mountains and 100+ Famous Mountains, not including any mountains with cable cars or gondolas. Applicants must submit evidence of their climbs using the Black Yak app. The school said the scholarship, funded by 1963 alumnus Kwon Jun-ha, 81, only offers about 70 spots, but over 1,400 students have applied, sparking fierce competition. "The scholarship reflects the donor's desire to foster healthy individuals with a spirit of challenge and community spirit," the school said.
