‘Community-driven action in villages can help avoid such deaths'

Time of India04-07-2025
In just the first five months of this year, 49 people were killed in lightning strikes across the state and not a single one of these deaths have taken place inside a concrete building, thus, indicating that perhaps most of these deaths are avoidable.
While there are apps like Damini, Sachet and Mausam which monitor lightning activity and accordingly, send alerts so that people can take shelter, villagers - who often form a majority of such deaths - do not own smartphones and thus, such measures do not protect them.
In such situations, one needs localized and community-driven action to protect people from getting struck by lightning. Most lightning deaths take place when people are standing under trees during a storm, working in fields, grazing cattle and taking shelter inside temporary structures.
Thus, one should steer clear of trees, water bodies and open fields during a thunderstorm and awareness programmes should be organized to spread this message among farmers and cattle grazers, especially.
School teachers, Asha workers, Anganwadi staff and panchayat leaders can spread safety measures through street plays, posters and community meetings. The authorities can designate concrete schools and panchayat offices as lightning-safe shelters. These are just some of the measures that can be applied in rural areas.

Depression to cross the coast at Odisha and north Coastal Andhra, rains likely

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted that a depression in the northwest-west central Bay of Bengal is set to cross the coast between Odisha and the north coast this afternoon. Currently situated south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, the system is expected to move northwest and make landfall later today. In anticipation of the cyclonic impact, the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh are likely to experience strong gusty winds, reaching speeds of 45-55 km/h. The Meteorological Department has also issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas along the northern coast, with further downpours expected across the remaining coastal districts. The Srikakulam district administration has been alerted in response to these warnings, particularly concerning the potential for significant rainfall in the north Andhra districts. In light of the forecasts, both government and private schools, as well as Anganwadi centres, have been closed for the day. Authorities have noted a steady increase in flood levels in the Nagavali River. Union Minister Rammohan Naidu and Minister Atchannaidu have provided several recommendations to officials in preparation for the expected weather conditions. Collector Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar has issued advisories to fishermen, urging them to refrain from going to sea. Meanwhile, residents in river basin areas have been cautioned to remain vigilant. To assist with any emergency situations, a control room has been established at the Srikakulam District Collectorate, and can be reached at 08942 240557.

Trains running late, roads waterlogged as overnight rain batters Mumbai; IMD issues red alert until noon

Mumbai woke up to yet another day of torrential downpour Monday, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red nowcast warning, the most severe level of weather alert, until around noon. The rain triggered waterlogging across several pockets of the city, affecting traffic and train services during peak travel hours. IMD data shows that between Sunday and Monday morning, the suburban Santacruz station received 99 mm rainfall while the Colaba coastal observatory registered 38 mm rainfall. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) automatic weather stations, between 8 am Sunday and 6 am Monday, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in the eastern suburbs, which clocked in an average of 60.57 mm, followed by 52.30 mm in the western suburbs and 45 mm in the island city division. Waterlogging was also reported near Kurla railway station, Andheri's D N Nagar, Dadar, Hindmata junction, besides other low-lying areas. Due to the heavy rain, local trains were also running 10 minutes late on both the Central and Western lines. The red nowcast warning for Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts is in effect until 11.50 am. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)'s Sachet portal, a platform to share real-time, geo-targeted disaster alerts and warnings, also placed Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban and Raigad districts under a red warning until noon. According to meteorologists, heavy rain is likely to continue unabated over the next few days. The IMD placed Mumbai and Thane districts under an orange alert, the level just below red alert in terms of severity, until at least Tuesday, following which the intensity of showers is likely to recede to 'heavy rain'.
