Ha Long Bay capsized tour boat survivor says he 'saw a streak of light' as he describes his escape

A 36-year-old Vietnamese man who survived the capsizing of a tour boat in Ha Long Bay has described his escape from the overturned vessel, stating that he "saw a streak of light and followed it to swim out".
At least 35 people were killed in the accident and a search is continuing for four who are still missing, according to Vietnamese state media.
Authorities said that an earlier report of 38 dead and five missing was incorrect.
The Wonder Sea embarked early Saturday afternoon for a three-hour excursion in Ha Long Bay, a popular tourist destination, carrying 46 passengers and three crew.
But a storm quickly covered the sky, bringing high winds and pouring rain, survivor Dang Anh Tuan said.
Mr Tuan said the passengers asked for the boat to turn back to shore, but the crew reassured them they were almost at their destination and kept the boat moving forward.
"It rained for about 15 minutes, and then the boat started to shake vigorously, tables and chairs were jostled around and seconds later the boat overturned," the 36-year-old fire extinguisher salesman said.
"Water gushed in and I lost all orientation.
"I tried to breathe. But more water came in. I took a deep breath, got rid of my life vest and dove down.
"I saw a streak of light and followed it to swim out, escaping the boat, and then I climbed on the overturned boat to look for help."
Mr Tuan and several other people survived by clinging on to the capsized boat and its propellers, waiting another two hours before the rain stopped and rescuers arrived.
The Wonder Sea boat was later seen being towed to a shipyard for investigation, with most of its windows shattered, and damage to its roof and handrails.
Police and other officials were seen working on the boat.
Rescue workers recovered 11 survivors, but one later died in hospital due to injuries, VNExpress newspaper said.
The boat turned upside down because of strong winds, the newspaper said.
A 14-year-old boy was rescued after four hours trapped in the overturned hull.
The newspaper said that most of the passengers were tourists from Hanoi, including about 20 children.
Mr Tuan was on a holiday with 11 university friends, only three of whom survived.
Mr Tuan has only minor cuts, but one of his friends suffered multiple injuries in his head and the other's tendons were cut by broken glass as he escaped the boat through a window.
The other nine members of the group were killed, including one who was travelling with his wife and three-year-old son.
A tropical storm is also moving toward the area.
A national weather forecast said that Storm Wipha is expected to hit Vietnam's northern region next week, including Ha Long Bay's coast.

Aussie TikTok star Maddy Macrae lives at airport for one week

An Aussie TikTok star has gone viral for living inside an airport for a week. Maddy Macrae, 32, from Sydney, decided to stay at Changi Airport in Singapore as part of a 'social experiment'. 'I am a big fan of the movie The Terminal and chose Changi because it's the best airport in the world (that's won all these awards),' she told 'But obviously I wasn't going to be making beds out of the seats in the airport,' she laughed. Instead, she stayed at Crown Plaza that's located at Terminal 3 – a rare hotel that allows guests to 'go outside'. 'I wanted to see what it would be like, to see if I would go crazy, would I go insane but I didn't, it just felt like a holiday,' Maddy said. The TikToker went live every day, detailing what she did to her 1.9 million followers. 'This is the most insane airport,' she said in her first viral clip. 'My first stop was the Jewel to see the waterfall – absolutely breathtaking. It's also a huge mall so I had a quick walk through before grabbing a milk tea and hopping on a skytrain to get to my hotel.' 'The pool is right next to my room and this is just insane it's here for a layover.' While Maddy stayed at the hotel for a week, guests with long layovers can book in six-hour blocks for $305 or $330 for an eight-hour stay. 'The worst thing about layovers is you're stuck inside but the hotel has a pool that's outdoors,' she said. 'Having that fresh air available to you is so nice, so is having access to a nice shower and gym.' While a social experiement, Maddy acknowledged that she was approached by the hotel to experience everything the airport in full. She also wanted to see what all the fuss was about Changi Airport given it was also recently recognised as the world's best airport hotel by Skytrax. 'There's so much great cultural food and experiences you can do without leaving the airport,' she said. 'I spent about $50 a day – you can get a great Singaporean dish between $7 and $15 – and a lot of the activities are free.' She said she never ran out of things to do having visited the 40m-tall waterfall surrounded by more than 900 trees and palms in the Forest Valley, Butterfly or Sunflower Garden. She was shocked to discover the airport hosts free outside tours for passengers with long layovers. 'I did do a free tour which took me to the river and Marina Bay,' she said. 'It's actually available to people who haven't even cleared immigration. You can be on the airport side and have a long layover and go on this free tour. 'If you're in the arrival side and haven't come through you can still do it.' Maddy's followers, while some sceptical about her living at an airport for a week, were mostly excited about how her 'experiment'. 'Going to Singapore in 6 weeks but im going to need a good reason to leave the airport,' one user wrote. 'My dream? There's a literal hedge maze in an airport!! It's giving Bridgerton meets The Terminal, and that's exactly the kind of storyline I belong in,' said another. 'That sounds like an amazing opportunity! Excited to see how the week-long layover unfolds. Changi Airport is definitely a great place to start the adventure,' a third added. Maddy said one of the weirdest things is how 'time doesn't exist'. 'The phenomenon around airport limbo exists even when you live there,' she said. 'So time is a construct and having a cocktail at 7am whether you're living there or not is absolutely on the cards. 'I had a cocktail once at 10am – nobody will frown at you for doing that,' she laughed. She said overall it was a 'fun challenge' and perfect airport for a long layover.

Tourism Australia unveils $130m campaign with a focus on China

Tourism Australia is launching a $130m campaign to lure in more cash-splashing holiday-makers from abroad, with China's exploding middle class top of mind. Ads unveiled by Tourism Australia on Monday offered a glimpse of how the government agency planned to target would-be vacationers from the US, UK, China, India and Japan. In the pitch to Americans, Robert Irwin gives an American traveller the ride of his life in a Toyota LandCruiser through steep sand dunes. Mr Irwin also features in a Chinese-language ad alongside Yu Shi – a young A-list actor leading an explosive career since his 2023 breakout role in a major Chinese epic fantasy franchise. Anthony Albanese gave a first look at the campaign while on his lengthy state visit to China last month. Making up some 860,000 visits, visitors from the country splashed a whopping $9.2bn in the 12 months to March, according to official figures. Both the number of visits and the amount spent were up on March 2024 figures by 26 per cent and 28 per cent respectively. Still reeling from the Covid-19 pandemic and blindsided by devastating natural disasters in recent years, Australia's tourism industry welcomes the trend. While in China, the Prime Minister made no secret that he was hoping to reframe Australia's relationship with Beijing in friendlier terms and shed the spectre of an increasingly militaristic regional rivalry. Though, despite his efforts to escape defence and security concerns, little has changed since his return, with the Trump administration driving uncertainty around AUKUS. The Albanese government has been keen to highlight that other countries are being targeted with the Come and Say G'day campaign. Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson featured in the UK ad, while wellness influencer Sara Tendulkar and comedian Abareru-kun appealed to audiences in India and Japan. All ads featured a chipper Ruby the Roo – an animated kangaroo eagerly urging travellers to 'come and say g'day'. 'The previous campaign struck a chord with visitors, with Ruby the Roo bounding into the imagination of countless guests, encouraging them to book a holiday Down Under,' Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell said. 'I know this iteration, featuring popular talent like Robert Irwin, will be a smash. 'Tourism is the lifeblood of so many communities right around the country and creates hundreds of thousands of jobs. 'Come and Say G'day is bringing more visitors to our shores, creating more jobs and growing our economy.'
