The Ecobank Group expands its gender-financing offer to facilitate access to financing for Africa's women entrepreneurs
From supporting corporate businesswomen, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to individual entrepreneurs, and those in the informal sector.
To bridge the gender financing gap for Africa's women entrepreneurs, Ecobank (www.Ecobank.com), the leading pan-African financial services group, announces significant enhancements to its multi-award-winning gender-financing solution - 'Ellevate by Ecobank'. These improvements strengthen Ecobank's commitment to women-owned, women-led, and women-focused businesses, while reinforcing its market competitiveness.
The World Bank estimates that closing the gender gap in Africa could add $2.5 trillion to the continent's GDP by 2025, underscoring the urgency of investing in women – not just for social justice, but for a more prosperous and equitable future for all Africans. In response, Ecobank's enhanced Ellevate programme is now more ambitious and inclusive, designed to address the diverse challenges faced by women entrepreneurs. The programme is being extended from new and existing Commercial Banking customers to include new and existing Consumer Banking and Corporate Banking customers, as well as female business leaders, with Corporate Banking customers serving as a pool of mentors. With this expansion, individual entrepreneurs - including those in the formal and informal sectors - can now fully benefit from its enhanced financial and non-financial solutions.
Jeremy Awori, Chief Executive Officer, Ecobank Group, said: 'We recognise and applaud the role that women entrepreneurs play in driving socio-economic impact across Africa and are committed to supporting them at every stage of their entrepreneurial journey. Since the launch of the Ellevate programme we have made significant progress, disbursing over US$200 million in loans, providing business networking opportunities, and offering leadership and capacity-building training for businesswomen.'
'Today, Ellevate 2.0 heralds in a new era for gender financing. It is bigger, better and more inclusive, delivering exceptional value to female entrepreneurs and women business leaders. Enhancing our products and solutions for women entrepreneurs to position Ecobank as their bank of choice is an integral component in accelerating the success of our Growth, Transformation and Returns strategy's objectives. It also supports our Group-wide objective of promoting gender equality and contributing to sustainable development.'
The enhanced Ellevate's value propositions now include:
Increasing access to finance with unsecured loans of up to US$50,000
Competitive interest rates and favourable collateral requirements
Accommodating customers with a two-year track record instead of the industry-standard three years
Helping them to find new customers and access new markets across Africa through our innovative online matchmaking MyTradeHub platform
Training, knowledge sharing webinars, support and other initiatives to enhance customers' business and leadership skills
Customised wealth management services
A one-stop shop to meet insurance needs.

To coincide with the celebrations of the International Women's Day, our enhanced Ellevate program will be launched by nine of our affiliates (Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Senegal, Togo and Zimbabwe) by the end of March 2025. It will then be rolled-out in phases across all our other sub-Saharan African affiliates throughout the year.

Africa's AI Ambition Takes Shape with AfricAI Venture
Four technology firms from Australia, Nigeria, the UAE and the Netherlands have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch a joint venture named AfricAI, aimed at creating enterprise-grade artificial intelligence solutions specifically designed for Africa's diverse markets. The pact marks a strategic push for digital sovereignty and localised innovation across the continent. Lakeba Group of Australia, Next Digital of Nigeria, AqlanX of the UAE and Agentic Dynamic of the Netherlands are the founding partners behind AfricAI. Nigeria will serve as the venture's launchpad, leveraging existing digital infrastructure to deploy AI-powered systems in public services, healthcare, enterprise operations and identity management. Strategic planners envision AfricAI as a distributed AI network that reaches across the continent, offering tailored solutions in agriculture, urban planning, education and citizen services. Expansion plans include Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Rwanda by 2026, with a commitment to training more than 100 AI professionals to bolster regional expertise. ADVERTISEMENT This initiative aligns with broader shifts in Africa's AI ecosystem. Investment in AI startups is rising, drawn increasingly towards sectors beyond fintech—particularly in climate tech, healthcare and education. Several African-born startups have already attracted significant funding. Notably, eight were raising over US$1 million apiece this year, with Egypt leading the pack with three firms securing such backing. Among those, the startup PlayAI, focused on voice technology, has even been acquired by Meta, underlining the continent's potential for globally competitive AI innovation. This heightened activity in AI mirrors the strengthening of digital ecosystems—with Lagos, Nigeria, recently being named the fastest-growing tech ecosystem in the world for 2025, driven by the presence of major unicorns such as Interswitch, Flutterwave, Jumia, OPay and Moniepoint. Still, barriers persist. Challenges related to limited infrastructure, funding gaps and data availability remain obstacles for widespread AI deployment. The AfricAI joint venture demonstrates a strategic response to these challenges. By focusing on solutions built in Africa for African contexts, the partners aim to avoid outsourcing while empowering local development. Meanwhile, other international collaborations—such as the Ghana-UAE US$1 billion tech hub deal—signal growing global interest in supporting Africa's digital transformation, including talent development and AI infrastructure. Venture capital patterns provide further insight: African AI startups are increasingly winning investor interest by demonstrating problem-first approaches, capital efficiency, domain expertise, scalability beyond home markets and regulatory alignment. Moreover, global tech giants are positioning themselves to support African innovation; Google, for instance, selected fifteen AI ventures from the continent for its Startups Accelerator programme, enabling early-stage development and mentorship.

Big-ticket events set the stage for tourism growth in the Middle East
Post Views: 44 In the GCC alone, the event and exhibition market is expected to reach US$827 million by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 3.94%. Panel hosted by TravTalk ME with San Jeet, CEO, DDP Publications moderating the session shared, following the global success of mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and Expo 2020 Dubai, momentum is building across the region as Saudi Arabia prepares to host the 2034 World Cup. Discussing the evolution and impact of these events, panellists including H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa, Chairman, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority; Sebastien Doussin, Senior Vice President – Global Travel Services & Destination Management. dnata and Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO, Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), shared fascinating insights at ATM 2025, where the events industry was under the spotlight. 'Big-ticket' events are playing a pivotal role in driving international tourism and accelerating economic growth, according to experts speaking recently at Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025. The panel addressed how big-ticket events – so-called for their high value, cost and impact – have demonstrated their ability to attract millions of international visitors, boost hotel occupancy, stimulate infrastructure growth and generate long-term brand positioning for host destinations. Highlighting the importance of understanding the long-term strategic value of big-ticket events beyond immediate sales, H.E. Khalid Jassim Al Midfa commented: 'Big-ticket events provide a destination with an opportunity to establish brand positioning and exposure in a competitive global environment. These events play a vital role in supporting broader government objectives, but it is essential to invest in the right product for your destination.' Doussin reaffirmed the importance of large-scale events in destination positioning, referencing the growth of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the surge of international golfing tournaments throughout the UAE and the launch of NBA events in the capital. Commenting on the impact of technology on events, Doussin said: 'Technology has already changed big-ticket events, especially in terms of distribution and customer experience. All of the ticketing for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar was completely digital through the official event app, offering flexibility and ease of use. Ultimately, technology enables an event to become more seamless, easier and enjoyable.' Meanwhile, Hamid urged the industry to broaden the definition of big-ticket events to include exhibitions, conferences and cultural performances. He referenced Bangkok's weekly concerts, which are mainly K-pop driven, as examples of how live entertainment extends tourist stays. Supporting the panel's observations, the ATM Travel Trends report highlights the rising appeal of live entertainment and sports in influencing travel decisions. Leisure events were outlined as the top opportunity for tourism growth among 50% of industry experts, as consumer demand for in-person and cultural experiences has increased significantly in recent years. The trend of combining traditional leisure and business travel, or 'bleisure', has also accelerated as increased remote working and flexible working visas have enabled more people to live and work overseas. Building on this, business travellers are often extending their stays in destinations, creating a new opportunity in this rapidly expanding sector. The report also highlighted that business events (MICE) are emerging as a significant driver of tourism growth across the Middle East, complementing the region's thriving leisure sector. Global business travel reached a record US$1.4 trillion in 2024 and is projected to rise to US$2 trillion by 2030. The Middle East is well-positioned to capture a growing share of this lucrative market, increasing from approximately 2.5% in 2024 to over 3% by the end of the decade, supported by world-class infrastructure, a strategic location, and an expanding schedule of high-profile events. Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME, Arabian Travel Market, concluded: 'As big-ticket events continue to gain global prominence, their role in shaping the future of tourism, driving economic diversification and enhancing international reputation has never been more evident. The Middle East, with its strategic vision, world-class infrastructure and focus on innovation, is well-positioned to lead the next era of global event tourism.' Building on the success of its inaugural edition, IBTM@ATM will return to ATM 2026, which takes place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 4-7 May 2026, with a dedicated zone within Hall 3, highlighting the show's strategic focus on the global business events sector. Designed to facilitate high-value connections, the zone allows business event suppliers to showcase, promote their destinations and services, and engage with pre-qualified international event planners, Professional Conference Organisers (PCOs), and associations through an exclusive hosted buyer programme.
