Indonesian police say two people arrested over fatal shooting in Bali villa

TimesLIVE5 days ago

Indonesian police said on Tuesday two people have been arrested over the fatal shooting of an Australian man and the wounding of another Australian man in a night-time attack in a villa on the resort island of Bali.
Police detained one person in the capital of Jakarta and another was arrested abroad, Indonesian police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo told reporters, without providing more details on the arrests.
The shooting, which took place in a villa in the Badung regency, happened on Saturday just after midnight.
Zivan Radmanovic, 32, died at the scene, while Sanar Ghanim, 35, was seriously wounded, state news Antara reported.
Police had said two people fled from the scene on two motorcycles and the two were heard speaking English with an Australian accent.
Bali police are expected to hold a press conference to give more details about the case on Wednesday morning, said spokesperson Ariasandy.

Hundreds support Irish group Kneecap at UK court terrorism hearing

Liam O'Hanna, whose stage name is Mo Chara, is alleged to have waved the flag of banned militant group Hezbollah during a Kneecap gig in London in November 2024. The 27-year-old was charged last month under the Terrorism Act, under which it is a criminal offence to display an article in a way which arouses reasonable suspicion that someone is a supporter of a proscribed organisation. Belfast-based Kneecap, who rap in Irish and English and regularly display pro-Palestine messages during their gigs, previously said the flag had been thrown on stage and described the charge against O'Hanna as an attempt to silence them. Prosecutor Michael Bisgrove told the court the case was not about O'Hanna's support for the people of Palestine or his criticism of Israel. 'He is well within his rights to voice his opinions and his solidarity, as is anybody else,' he said. 'The allegation in this case is a wholly different thing and deals with the video recording showing that, in November of last year, Mr O'Hanna wore and displayed the flag of Hezbollah … while saying 'up Hamas, up Hezbollah'.' O'Hanna's lawyer, Brenda Campbell, said the defence would argue the charge was brought after the six-month limit to bring such a charge. 'If we are right in relation to that, then this court has no jurisdiction and there ends the case,' she added. A further hearing will be held on August 20 to determine whether the charge was brought too late, Judge Paul Goldspring said. Hundreds of supporters had gathered outside Westminster Magistrates' Court ahead of the hearing, including some Northern Irish politicians and musicians, singing and waving Irish and Palestinian flags. O'Hanna had to push past a huge scrum of photographers when he arrived, with some supporters forcing their way into the entrance of the court, chanting 'Free Palestine' and 'Free Mo Chara'.

Suspects in Bali murder are all Australian, face death penalty: police

Picture: Pixabay Three Australians were arrested in Indonesia over the murder of a male compatriot on the resort island of Bali and face the death penalty, police said Wednesday, after a days-long manhunt. Authorities had been searching for several suspects over the shooting of Zivan Radmanovic, a 32-year-old Australian national, on Saturday. He was killed when two people burst into his villa in the tourist hub of Badung, and at least one opened fire. A second man, 34-year-old Sanar Ghanim, was seriously wounded in the attack. "Three suspects have been arrested along with several pieces of evidence allegedly used to carry out the shooting," Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya told reporters. He said the three suspects -- all Australian men -- were charged with multiple offences, including premeditated murder, which carries a maximum penalty of death, as well as murder and torture resulting in death. Murder carries the maximum penalty of 15 years in prison, while torture resulting in death carries a potential seven-year jail term.

Mushroom Lunch Deaths: 'Patterson lied, but she isn't a murderer', says lawyer

IOL An Australian woman accused of killing three lunch guests with deadly mushrooms should not be judged guilty just because she lied after the meal, her defence lawyer said Wednesday. Picture: Pixabay An Australian woman accused of killing three lunch guests with deadly mushrooms should not be judged guilty just because she lied after the meal, her defence lawyer said Wednesday. Erin Patterson, 50, is charged with murdering her estranged husband's parents and aunt in July 2023 by spiking their beef Wellington lunch with death cap mushrooms. She is also accused of attempting to murder a fourth guest -- her husband's uncle -- who survived the lunch after a long stay in the hospital. Patterson has steadfastly maintained her innocence during a seven-week-long trial that has made headlines from New York to New Delhi. As the trial came to its closing stages on Wednesday, defence lawyer Colin Mandy sought to explain Patterson's behaviour in the days following the deadly feast.
