Cryptocurrency Threatens Future of Argentine President
Argentine President Javier Milei could face an impeachment trial in Congress, opposition lawmakers said on Saturday, after the libertarian leader touted a cryptocurrency which crashed soon after.
Milei late on Friday posted on X recommending the little-known crypto coin $LIBRA, which soon after shot up to nearly $5 apiece.
Just hours later, the cryptocurrency plummeted to under $1, according to Reuters.
The impeachment drive against Milei is gaining serious momentum in Congress, with lawmakers demanding to know who profited from the token's rise and fall.
Argentina's fintech chamber acknowledged that the case could potentially be a 'rug pull,' in which the developers of a crypto token draw legitimate investments, pumping up the value, only to later dump their stake.
'This scandal, which embarrasses us on an international scale, requires us to launch an impeachment request against the president,' said lawmaker Leandro Santoro, a member of the opposition coalition.
Santoro said that Milei's endorsement created a financial trap, even if he was not directly involved.
The President's political opponents say the scandal had devastated investors as thousands who trusted him lost millions, while many made fortunes due to privileged information.
Later, Milei deleted the post on X, with local media saying the post had been up for a few hours on Friday night.
He later said he took down his post after becoming aware of the circumstances, and that he had no relation to the cryptocurrency.
'I was not aware of the details of the project and once I found out, I decided to not continue giving it publicity,' he said.
KIP Protocol, the company behind $LIBRA, affirmed that Javier was never involved in the project.
The company, which is backed by Animoca Ventures in Hong Kong, insisted that $LIBRA was a private enterprise with no ties to the Argentine government.
'President Milei was not and is not involved in the development of this project,' KIP Protocol said on X.
Just hours later, KIP revised its statement, saying that the launch and market-making were fully managed by Kelsier Ventures, a company led by Hayden Davis.
KIP denied controlling any tokens and claimed their role was strictly post-launch, providing tech infrastructure for AI-based projects.
The company also said their team had received threats after the scandal erupted.
Official Investigation to Try to Contain Crisis
Meanwhile, the Argentine presidency has announced an official investigation into LIBRA, as Milei desperately attempts to distance himself from the controversy.
In a statement released via X on Saturday night, the Office of the President confirmed that Milei met with KIP Protocol officials Mauricio Novelli and Julian Peh on October 19, 2024, where they presented their blockchain-based initiative, dubbed 'Viva la Libertad.'
According to the recorded meeting, the company's plan was to finance private ventures in Argentina using blockchain technology. Also present at the meeting was presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni.
On January 30, Javier met with Hayden Mark Davis at Casa Rosada, Argentina's presidential palace.
The statement clarified that Davis had no official connection to the Argentine government and was introduced by KIP Protocol as the project's technology provider.
Javier defended his endorsement of KIP Protocol, saying 'The President shared a post on his personal accounts announcing the launch of the KIP Protocol project, just as he does daily with many entrepreneurs who want to launch a project in Argentina to create jobs and get investments.'

UK to boost ‘homegrown talent' in new AI skills drive
LONDON: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday pledged to boost 'homegrown talent for the AI age' by teaming up with tech giants to train 7.5 million workers in artificial intelligence skills. Speaking at the start of London's Tech Week, with a line-up of speakers including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Starmer said: 'In this global race, we can be an AI maker and not an AI taker.' Starmer was due to have a one-on-one conversation with the chief of the star Silicon Valley semiconductor firm whose chips are critical for artificial intelligence applications and research. Ahead of the event bringing together industry giants, Starmer announced a government-industry partnership to train 7.5 million workers in AI skills, including in using chatbots and large language models to boost productivity. Tech firms including Nvidia, Google, Microsoft and Amazon committed to make training materials freely available to businesses over the next five years. Google EMEA region President Debbie Weinstein called it a 'crucial initiative' essential for developing AI skills, unlocking AI-powered growth 'and cementing the UK's position as an AI leader.' In his opening speech, Starmer said Britain must build 'the digital infrastructure that we need to make sure AI improves our public services.' The UK has a 'responsibility' to 'harness this unprecedented opportunity and to use it to improve the lives of working people,' Starmer added. 'We are going to build more homes, more labs, more data centers, and we're going to do it much, much more quickly.' His government has pledged to fire up the UK's flagging economy, including with 'pro-growth' AI regulations to attract tech investment and turn Britain into an 'AI superpower.' 'We are putting the power of AI into the hands of the next generation — so they can shape the future, not be shaped by it,' Starmer said in a press release before the event. The British leader unveiled £187 million ($253 million) in funding to help develop tech abilities including training for one million secondary school students, as part of its 'TechFirst' program. He called it a 'step change in how we train homegrown talent for the AI age.' The investment will 'embed AI right through our education system,' he said, announcing nearly £150 million in undergraduate and PhD research scholarships in AI and tech. Starmer also announced a 'commitment from Nvidia to partner on a new AI talent pipeline,' including through expanding a Nvidia lab in Bristol, southwest England. The UK's AI sector is valued at £72 billion, employing over 64,000 people, and is projected to exceed £800 billion by 2035. It was growing 30 times faster than the rest of the economy, according to government figures from 2023 — an 'incredible' rate, according to Starmer. Other speakers at the tech conference include the CEO of Mistral AI, Arthur Mensch, the UK's Science Secretary Peter Kyle and Markus Villig, founder of ride-hailing app Bolt.

Saudi Arabia's CST reports network performance in 2025 Hajj
Saudi Arabia's Communications, Space & Technology Commission (CST) reported over 181.2 million local and international voice calls in Makkah, Madinah, and the holy sites during the 2025 Hajj season. The strong performance reflects advanced telecom infrastructure and coordinated efforts among service providers. The CST reported a 32% year-on-year (YoY) increase in mobile internet speeds during the 2025 Hajj, reaching 297 Mbps between May 28 and June 6. Daily data usage per person hit 1,259 MB, more than 2.9 times the global average, CST said in a statement sent by Argaam. The commission attributed the results to strong government support and effective coordination between the public and private sectors involved in the Hajj season. The Kingdom's advanced digital infrastructure played a key role in enhancing pilgrims' experience, health, safety, and security. Various tech innovations, including artificial intelligence (AI) tools used for crowd management, contributed to service quality. These technologies enabled authorities to deliver reliable and high-quality services during the pilgrimage. The commission said it mobilized all resources to ensure high-quality telecom and IT services, working closely with telecom providers. This year's AI-powered crowd control system, developed in partnership with Aramco Digital, was successfully deployed with support from the High Commission for Industrial Security, Saudi Water Authority, and Saudi Railways Co.

Qualcomm Strengthens AI Portfolio with $2.4 Billion Alphawave Deal
US chipmaker Qualcomm on Monday agreed to acquire British semiconductor company Alphawave for about $2.4 billion as part of efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence technology. Alphawave shareholders will receive 183 pence per share, a nearly 96% premium to the price immediately before Qualcomm disclosed its interest in the company. The shares jumped 22% in early London trade to just below the offer price. US-based firms have been snapping up British assets, taking advantage of a market that is plagued by comparatively weaker valuations and stunted growth. Alphawave, which designs and licenses semiconductor technology for data centers, networking and storage, had garnered takeover interest from Qualcomm and SoftBank-owned chip tech provider Arm in early April for its "serdes" technology. The technology underpins the speed at which data is processed by chips - crucial for AI development - and serves as the foundation for Broadcom's and Marvell Technology's multibillion-dollar bespoke chip businesses. Arm walked away after initial discussions with Alphawave, Reuters exclusively reported in April citing sources. Qualcomm also tabled two alternative all-share offers to Alphawave's shareholders, after receiving multiple extensions from the UK's takeover panel to table a firm offer. The British company said it considers the terms of the cash offer to be fair and reasonable and intends to unanimously recommend it to its shareholders. Alphawave also completed the disposal of its stake in WiseWave, its joint venture with Chinese investment firm Wise Road Capital, to existing state shareholders on Monday.
