Bumble plans to layoff about 30% of global workforce in major overhaul

Online dating platform Bumble plans to lay off about 240 employees, or roughly 30 per cent of its global workforce.
In a securities filing, Bumble disclosed that its board approved the cuts this week as it realigns its operating structure to optimise execution on its strategic priorities.
The Austin, Texas-based company expects to see $40 million in annual cost savings spanning from the workforce reductions, much of which it says it will invest in product and technology development.
These decisions were not made lightly, and we are deeply grateful for the contributions of every employee impacted," Bumble said in a statement sent to The Associated Press Wednesday adding that it was now focused on moving forward in a way that strengthens our core business and "positions us for future growth.
Shares for Bumble soared more than 23 per cent following the news. Its stock traded at just over $6.40 as of Wednesday afternoon.
Bumble did not immediately specify when it would implement the layoffs or which roles would be affected. But its securities filing signalled that the process would extend into later in the year noting that it expects to incur costs related to the layoffs, including severance for impacted employees, amounting to anywhere between $13 million to $18 million primarily in its third and fourth fiscal quarters.
In a note to employees Wednesday, Bumble CEO and founder Whitney Wolfe Herd wrote that Bumble, like the online dating industry itself, is at an inflection point. She noted that the company has been rebuilding in recent months, which requires hard decisions.
Wolfe Herd founded Bumble in 2014, just two years after co-founding Tinder in 2012. She had previously served as Bumble's CEO from 2020 through January 2024, and stepped back into the top seat in March.
Bumble has struggled on the market since going public in 2021. While shares popped up on Wednesday, its stock is still down more than 35 per cent over the last year and nearly 92 per cent since its February 2021 debut.
In its most recent first quarter earnings, Bumble reported a total revenue of about USD 247 million down nearly 8 per cent from the same period a year ago. The company said Wednesday that it expects to rake between USD 244 million and USD 249 million for the second quarter of its 2025 fiscal year. That's up from previous estimates but still lower than the USD 269 million it reported for its second quarter in 2024.

Indian banks still prefer funding fossil fuels project amid rising risk to investment: Report

NEW DELHI: Even as India aggressively pushes for a clean energy transition, Indian banks have substantially financed fossil fuel and coal-fired power projects—totalling approximately USD 29 billion between 2016 and 2023—which could hinder and complicate the path to achieving net-zero emissions, states a recent report. Prepared by Climate Risk Horizon, a Bangalore-based non-profit organisation that monitors climate-related risks for investors, the report highlights that the State Bank of India (SBI) and private lenders such as Axis Bank and ICICI Bank were among the top financiers of coal. Titled 'Stuck in the Past: Coal Ties Hinder Indian Banks' Energy Transition' the report indicates that India's leading banks invested around USD 29 billion in coal during the specified period. Of this amount, approximately USD 15.2 billion was provided as coal loans, while USD 13.5 billion was allocated to coal underwriting services Further segregating the data, the analysis shows that public banks provided roughly 75% of the coal loans while private banks financed roughly 83% of the total underwriting. According to the report, over these eight years, the amount of coal loans fluctuated significantly. Still, coal underwriting by Indian banks remained relatively stable with an average of USD 1.7 billion per year. Underwriting service is a process of mitigating risk for financial transactions by financial institutions by guaranteeing repayment in case of damage or financial loss.

Vietnam ends death penalty for eight crimes; may spare real estate tycoon Truong My Lan

Vietnam has lifted the death penalty for eight crimes in legal reforms that may spare the life of a real estate tycoon imprisoned in the country's largest financial fraud case. The legal reforms in Vietnam ended the death penalty for eight crimes, including trying to overthrow the government, damaging state infrastructure, making and selling fake medicine, starting wars, spying, drug trafficking, embezzlement, and taking bribes. Vietnamese lawmakers passed the reforms on Wednesday (June 25, 2025,) according to state media. 'Truong My Lan, sentenced to death for her involvement in Vietnam's largest financial fraud case, will be eligible to have her sentence reduced after the reforms,' her lawyer said on Thursday (June 26, 2025.) 'The 67-year-old chair of the real estate company Van Thinh Phat who was facing execution for her involvement in fraud amounting to $12.5 billion — nearly 3% of the country's 2022 GDP — will now be 'eligible for the exemption for the death penalty' according to the new rules,' her lawyer Phan Minh Hoang told The Associated Press. 'We are still waiting for the official instructions of implementing the law amendment for next steps in her case,' Mr. Hoang said. The new rules also say that anyone already sentenced to death for these crimes but not yet executed by July 1, 2025 will have their sentence changed to life in prison after a final decision by Vietnam's highest court. After the legal changes, the maximum punishment for Lan's crimes will be life imprisonment without parole. Mr. Hoang said they were continuing to work on repaying the damages to get her sentence further reduced. The law change will likely impact other ongoing trials such as the one that started earlier this week involving the real estate and infrastructure development company Phuc Son Group, whose chairman Nguyen Van Hau is accused of paying more than $5 million in bribes to win contracts for major infrastructure projects across three provinces. Following the change, Vietnam now has the death penalty for 10 crimes such as murder, sexual abuse of children, treason and terrorism.
