Hezbollah MP Denounces Israeli Aggression, Slams Performance of Some Lebanese Media Outlets

Al Manar31-01-2025
Member of Hezbollah's Loyalty to Resistance bloc MP Ibrahim Al-Moussawi denounced the new Israeli aggression which targeted the town of Janta in Bekaa, calling on the Lebanese State to act immediately.
In a statement quoted by the Reuters news agency, MP Al-Moussawi described the Israeli attack as 'a very dangerous violation and a blatant and explicit aggression'.
'The Lebanese state, represented by the presidency, the government and the army, is required to take immediate action,' the Hezbollah lawmaker added.
Two people were martyred and 10 others were wounded in an overnight Israeli strike on the village of Janta in the eastern province of Baalbek early on Friday.

Performance of Lebanese Media
On the other hand, the Hezbollah MP slammed some Lebanese media outlets over their coverage of the latest events taking place in south Lebanon including the epic confrontations against the Israeli occupation forces which missed the January 26 withdrawal deadline on Sunday.
In an interview with Al-Manar, MP Al-Moussawi categorized the performance of the Lebanese media outlets to three levels.
The negligent media outlets, he said, referring to the performance of the state TV, which the lawmaker said broadcast cartoons on Sunday, when at least 22 people were martyred and more than 120 others were injured by Israeli attacks in south Lebanon.
The second type of media outlets was those which 'lack national immunity', according to Al-Moussawi, who said that they covered Sunday's event 'in a way that serves the enemy's agenda by focusing on destruction and blaming the resistance over the tragedy that was a result of the Israeli aggression.'
The Hezbollah lawmaker then talked about the third type of Lebanese media outlets, which were 'objective and adhered to the national identity and reflected the true image of the legendary steadfastness of people and resistance.'

Detained aid boat activists launch hunger strike

More than a dozen activists being held by Israel after their aid boat was intercepted en route to Gaza launched a hunger strike on Monday to protest their detention, according to a local NGO assisting them. At least five of the 21 passengers of the Freedom Flotilla vessel Handala have agreed to be summarily deported after the boat was stopped and boarded by the Israeli navy while attempting to break a military blockade of the war-ravaged Palestinian territory. The legal aid group Adalah said that on Monday afternoon, "hearings concluded at Givon Prison, concerning the continued detention of the 14 volunteers who (...) refused to consent to an expedited deportation process". "During the hearings, the volunteers stressed that their mission was humanitarian — motivated by the need to act against Israel's illegal siege and the genocide against Palestinians in Gaza," the group said in a statement. One U.S. activist reported "severe physical violence by Israeli forces", while others described being held in poor conditions, Adalah said. "The activists told the tribunal that they remain on an open hunger strike in protest of their unlawful detention," it added. It later said the tribunal had "upheld the continued detention of the 14 volunteers". Israel has been treating their cases as immigration violations, which Adalah maintains is illegal, saying they were brought into the country against their will from international waters. The Handala's 21 passengers hailed from 10 countries, and included two French lawmakers and a pair of Al Jazeera journalists. Adalah said at least one of the lawmakers, the two journalists and two other passengers were already on their way out of the country. Two passengers who were Israeli-American dual nationals were released after being interrogated, according to the organisation. A previous boat sent by Freedom Flotilla, the Madleen, was also intercepted by the Israeli military in international waters on June 9. It carried 12 campaigners, including prominent Swedish activist Greta Thunberg. The activists were eventually expelled by Israel.

Timing critical as PM Salam plans cabinet session on Hezbollah's armed status

Report by Lara El Hachem, English adaptation by Mariella Succar Prime Minister Nawaf Salam is considering convening a special cabinet session focused on Hezbollah's weapons. He wants the meeting to be productive and lead to concrete results but is still deciding on the right timing. Lebanese officials, including Salam, are awaiting a response from U.S. envoy Tom Barrack regarding a recent proposal delivered in Beirut. Salam is unsure whether to hold the session before or after receiving that response. Although reports say Salam brought a proposal from Paris to Ain al-Tineh suggesting a dedicated ministerial meeting on Hezbollah's arms, sources say he communicated to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Druze leader Walid Jumblatt that no aid will be provided until the weapons issue is resolved and reforms are completed. Meanwhile, the atmosphere at Baabda Palace indicates that any proposal lacking consensus or thorough preparation will not be put before the cabinet, as Hezbollah interprets the situation. These developments come as U.S. envoy Tom Barrack tied the government's credibility to turning its promises of exclusive state control over arms into real action. He emphasized that both the government and Hezbollah must fully comply to prevent Lebanon from remaining trapped in its current deadlock. Insiders see this as increased pressure on the government to follow through on a roadmap implementing the ceasefire agreement. The government had already committed to the deal during former Prime Minister Najib Mikati's tenure and reaffirmed its commitment in its policy statement, including approval of the army deployment plan. At the same time, sources familiar with recent discussions between Berri and Barrack say that Berri conveyed to the envoy that Lebanon cannot rush the weapons issue, especially as Hezbollah has demonstrated a positive stance and commitment to the ceasefire, maintaining neutrality in the Iran-Israel conflict, and being part of both the executive and legislative branches. Sources also say Barrack communicated Lebanon's position emphasizing the need to halt Israeli attacks before starting serious talks on weapons, expressing surprise at his firm tone on the matter.
