MACC to help Sabah govt stop leakages in public funds, resources

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will assist the government in curbing public fund and resources leakages in the long term.
MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations) Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya said efforts to curb leakages implemented by the Sabah state government, for example, would have various impacts on all parties.
"The direction in this state is not only to prevent corruption but also to think about how to help the state government curb leakages so that the impact of these efforts can be sustained," he said.
Khusairi was speaking at the handing over of duties ceremony for the Sabah MACC director's post.
At the ceremony, Penang MACC director Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah was appointed the new Sabah MACC director, effective Aug 15, replacing Datuk S. Karunanithy, who in turn will replace Fuad.
Khusairi said Karunanithy had not only played an important role in building public confidence in MACC but also successfully led several major operations, proving Sabah MACC's commitment in combating corruption and abuse of power.
"He has shown extraordinary commitment, firm and strategic leadership, and successfully faced various major challenges throughout his tenure at Sabah MACC," he said.
As for Fuad, a Sabahan, he is expected to continue advancing the anti-corruption agenda more aggressively and strategically.
Meanwhile, in his speech, Karunanithy said the success of Sabah MACC in the operational and prevention sectors during his tenure was the result of strategic cooperation between all parties, including federal and state departments as well as media partners.
"I would also like to express my appreciation and thanks to the Sabah government, especially Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, for always welcoming all initiatives and proposals, whether in operations, prevention, or governance improvements, that were put forward during my tenure.
"I have led Sabah MACC for five years and 11 months, beginning on Sept 17, 2019, until receiving a new mandate as Penang MACC director, and will report for duty on Aug 15.
"I urge Sabah MACC personnel to always cooperate and maintain a work culture of integrity and professionalism," he said.
Also present were Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa; Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun; and Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah.

Muhyiddin only a witness in fuel subsidy probe — MCMC

KUALA LUMPUR: The investigation into a TikTok post linking Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to the targeted RON95 fuel subsidy is solely to verify the context of the content and does not involve any accusation against him. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) clarified this as the Pagoh member of parliament was contacted to give a statement as a witness to assist in the ongoing probe. "The focus of the investigation is to verify the context of the content in question. "It does not involve any accusation or charge against him. "To complete the investigation, MCMC will call in any relevant individuals if necessary," it said. The commission also urged the public not to speculate and to allow the investigation to proceed independently, prudently, and professionally. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim instructed MCMC to investigate Muhyiddin's denial of allegations that he defended the rights of foreigners in the RON95 subsidy rationalisation issue. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said Anwar also ordered appropriate action to be taken on the matter. MP defended the rights of foreigners benefiting from the subsidy rationalisation.

Penang to host 19th Asean Navy Chiefs' Meeting from Aug 18-22

GEORGE TOWN: Penang will host the 19th Asean Navy Chiefs' Meeting (ANCM) from Aug 18 to 22, in conjunction with the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025. The Navy's Western Fleet commander, Vice-Admiral Datuk Baharuddin Wan Md Nor, said the ANCM is a crucial forum that brings together navy chiefs from all Asean countries to discuss aspects of security, peace and stability in the region's seas. "A large portion of these Asean countries are closely linked to the maritime world, so issues of security and stability at sea are important. "In conjunction with the ANCM, several side events will also be held, along with Hari Buletin 4.0 at Padang Kota Lama on Aug 17, including the Asean Navies' City Parade (ANCP)," he said during a joint press conference with Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at Komtar here on Thursday (Aug 7). Baharuddin said the ANCP will feature a parade of contingents from Asean countries represented by sailors, and they are also collaborating with several associations and schools in Penang to liven up the event. He added that the Asean Fleet Review will also be organised on Aug 21, and the Penang Governor Tun Ramli Ngah Talib is scheduled to attend as the guest of honour to take the salute at the event. "This is another event full of traditional and military ceremonies, so we call on the local community, especially those in Penang and the surrounding states, to come and witness this historical and lively event," he said. Malaysia assumed the role of Asean Chair 2025 with the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability," symbolising its aspiration to guide this 58-year-old regional bloc toward a more united, dynamic, and sustainable future. Meanwhile, Chow said this year, Hari Buletin is being co-organised with the Navy as part of efforts to celebrate regional maritime unity in a spirit of goodwill and patriotism in conjunction with the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025. He said various interesting activities are planned, including the ANCP, which is held in conjunction with the Asean Multilateral Naval Exercise 2025, as well as performances and demonstrations by maritime fleets from Southeast Asian countries, including the Indonesian National Army, Royal Thai Navy, Myanmar Navy and Vietnam Navy as well as a silent drill performance and a performance by the Navy band. – Bernama

CAP wants SST imposed on cigarettes in 2026 Budget

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) has called for the 2026 Budget to include a sales and service tax on cigarettes. CAP senior education officer and anti-smoking activist N.V. Subbarow said it was high time for this as cigarettes have been exempt from sales taxes for eight years. "The last SST was imposed in 2018 on tobacco products. After that, there was no tax on cigarettes for eight years, which is a big disappointment. "Smokers spend about RM500 every month. Even healthy food does not cost that much. "As such, we expect a mandatory sales tax on cigarettes in the 2026 Budget if the government wants to reduce the current number of five million smokers," he told the New Straits Times. Earlier today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, said the government was considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax to between 60 per cent and 70 per cent of retail prices. He said the proposal was consistent with the government's health reforms. Last week, Anwar had said the government would expand its pro-health tax framework to include tobacco, vape products, and alcohol, beyond just sugary drinks, under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Subbarow said evidence from countries across all income levels showed that raising cigarette prices was very effective in reducing demand. "Higher taxes encourage some smokers to quit and deter others from starting. They also reduce the number of ex-smokers who return to cigarettes and reduce consumption among continuing smokers. "Given that this fact has been confirmed in other countries, CAP hopes our prime minister will announce a sales tax on cigarettes," he added.
