SYC: Raising retirement age to 65 may worsen Sabah unemployment
Published on: Fri, May 23, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Youth Council warns that raising the mandatory retirement age to 65 could worsen Sabah's already high unemployment rate. Its president, Abqaree Fawwaz Abekan, echoed concerns by the National Youth Council, noting that Sabah's unemployment stands at 7.7 pc, the highest in Malaysia, despite strong labour force participation. He said extending the retirement age would hinder job opportunities for youths and urged the government to maintain the current retirement age. Instead, he proposed focusing on boosting public sector productivity by employing more tech-savvy and energetic young people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah and Sarawak to become national sustainable energy hubs under 13MP: PM
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR: The federal government has placed special emphasis on elevating Sabah and Sarawak as Malaysia's competitive regional hubs for sustainable energy under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the five-year plan in the Dewan Rakyat today, said the initiative includes the development of the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub and the Sabah Energy Supply Guarantee — both aimed at strengthening the energy infrastructure in the two states. 'These efforts will attract high-impact investments and promote clean technology development, ultimately benefiting the people of Sabah and Sarawak,' he said. The government is also focusing on driving economic development in the east coast states of Kelantan, Pahang, and Terengganu by establishing a competitive, integrated national food production hub, expected to generate new economic opportunities, particularly for rural communities. Themed 'Melakar Semula Pembangunan' (Redesigning Development), the 13MP outlines the government's commitment to redesigning Malaysia's socio-economic development agenda for the 2026–2030 period. It aligns closely with the Malaysia Madani framework, a vision centred on human dignity, inclusivity, and sustainability. The plan sets out clear policies, strategies, and initiatives aimed at nation-building, improving public well-being, preserving environmental sustainability, enhancing governance, and positioning Malaysia for stronger regional and global economic growth. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Locality considered in placement of Sabah, Sarawak, and Orang Asli teacher graduates
Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR: Locality-based placement, particularly for candidates from Sabah, Sarawak, and the Orang Asli community, is one of the key considerations in the deployment of new teachers, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. She said the approach is intended to allow these teachers to serve closer to their hometowns, while also strengthening education development in rural areas. However, Fadhlina said that final placement decisions are ultimately determined by actual vacancies and current subject option requirements, in line with educational priorities. 'While candidates may indicate their preferred locations and willingness to serve, placements are made based on option needs and available vacancies. This approach aligns with our core educational priorities and aspirations,' she explained. She added that the Ministry of Education remains committed to ensuring students nationwide receive quality education through the strategic placement of sufficient new teachers in schools. Fadhlina was responding to a question from Kalam Salan (PN-Sabak Bernam) during Ministers' Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today, regarding the key considerations in placing new teachers who have graduated from the Institute of Teacher Education (IPGM). Apart from that, she said that special admission pathways are provided at the IPGM level for students from Sabah, Sarawak, and the Orang Asli communities to ensure that teacher placement in these localities aligns with the specific needs of schools in those areas. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
