Real Madrid hit out at plan to play match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami
Barcelona and Villarreal are seeking permission from the football authorities to play in Miami in December. Fan groups of the clubs have already threatened legal action if the plan progresses, and now Real have expressed their opposition to the move.
'Real Madrid would like to express to its members, supporters and football fans in general its strongest rejection of the proposal to play outside Spain the match … between Villarreal and Barcelona,' the club said in a statement.
'The measure, promoted without prior information or consultation with the clubs participating in that competition, violates the essential principle of territorial reciprocity that governs two-round league competitions [one game at home and the other at the opposing team's], altering the competitive balance and granting an undue sporting advantage to the applicant clubs.
'The integrity of the competition requires that all matches be held under the same conditions for all teams. Unilaterally modifying this regime breaks the equality between contenders, compromises the legitimacy of the results and sets an unacceptable precedent that opens the door to exceptions based on interests other than strictly sporting, with a clear impact on sporting integrity and the risk of adulteration of the competition.
'If this proposal is carried out, its consequences would be so serious that they would mean a before and after for the world of football.'
Real said they had asked Fifa not to authorise the staging of the game without the prior consent of all La Liga clubs, and had asked Uefa to urge the Spanish football federation (Rfef) to withdraw the request.
Villarreal had earlier pledged that season ticket holders would be offered free travel and entry if the league game was moved to Miami. The club also said those who cannot go, or do not wish to go, would receive a 20% discount on the total cost of their season ticket.
If Villarreal and Barcelona ultimately get the green light, La Liga will be the first of Europe's top five leagues to stage a match overseas.
The Villarreal president, Fernando Roig, told the club's official website: 'Reaching the United States is an opportunity we must seize. We have to expand the brand of our football and of Villarreal CF. Many clubs agree on the need to internationalise and to look for ways to generate more revenue so we can get closer to other leagues, such as the Premier League.'
Rfef gave its approval to the plan on Monday. The matter has now been referred to European football's governing body Uefa to begin the procedures and obtain the necessary authorisation from Fifa, world football's governing body.
The Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, said last year his competition had no plans to move matches overseas but accepted Fifa moves to review the rules meant the 'door was ajar' for other leagues to do so.

Glenn Hoddle names 'team to beat' in Champions League and snubs PSG
Glenn Hoddle has named the 'team to beat' in the Champions League and overlooked holders Paris Saint-Germain. PSG clinched their first ever Champions League trophy last season, thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final. The French champions secured more silverware on Wednesday night as they came from two goals down against Tottenham to win the UEFA Super Cup. Thomas Frank looked set for an immediate trophy at the start of his Spurs tenure after Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero scored either side of half-time. But Lee Kang-in gave PSG hope with an 85th-minute goal and Goncalo Ramos' 95th-minute equaliser forced a penalty shootout. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Luis Enrique's side held their nerve in the shootout to give PSG their first Super Cup trophy and deny Spurs a second European trophy in three months. PSG also impressed in the Club World Cup over the summer – losing to Chelsea in the final – and appear to be the favourites to win the Champions League this season. Hoddle insists PSG under Enrique are a 'serious team' but views Liverpool as the 'team to beat' in Europe, especially if Arne Slot gets a couple more transfer signings over the line. The Premier League champions have spent £250m so far this summer and remain interested in big-money moves for Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi. Asked who will emerge as PSG's biggest rival for the Champions League trophy this season, Hoddle told TNT Sports: 'For me, we're all hearing the same thing about Liverpool in the transfer market. 'If those deals so happen, wow, they will have some squad. So I would say Liverpool might be the ones to beat. 'If they get who they're tying to get, I think they will go very close in Europe. They're a very good sign now, never mind about the new signings. 'PSG are a serious team though and really well-balanced. That's why they will be one of the favourites to go back and win it but in any sport, winning a title is one thing but retaining it is very, very difficult.' Ex-England star Karen Carney, meanwhile, declared Barcelona as PSG's biggest rival in the Champions League. The La Liga champions reached the semi-finals of the Champions League last season before losing to Inter Milan in heartbreaking circumstances. 'Barcelona's Achilles heel was just the defensive mindset last season but going forward they had absolutely everything,' she said. 'PSG will respect that and Barcelona could push them. PSG are full of quality, they're only just come back from their summer break. 'They're the ones to beat for me. It would be great if the English teams can bridge the gap but I still have my eye on that Barcelona team because if they sort out the defence they could push these guys.' Despite watching his Tottenham team concede two late goals and then lose the penalty shootout, Frank was able to take a number of positives from the Super Cup defeat. The former Brentford boss took over at Spurs earlier in the summer after the sacking of Ange Postecoglou. 'I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time,' Frank said. 'We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit. More Trending 'The team, the players, the club, the fans, there is a lot to be happy with. It is a flip of the coin when you go to a penalty shootout. 'We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic, and we needed to be against a team like PSG. 'The way we wanted to defend, high pressure and low defending, was top, almost perfect, and also the set pieces were very good and dangerous.' Spurs face Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday while PSG begin their Ligue 1 title defence a day later against Nantes. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Barcelona resort to emergency measures to register Marcus Rashford as board members put personal wealth at risk
BARCELONA have taken emergency action to ensure Marcus Rashford can be registered by the club. The 27-year-old joined the Catalan giants on a season-long loan with a £26million option to buy from Manchester United last month. But just three days before they begin their LaLiga title defence begins against Mallorca, Rashford is still not registered as a Barca player. The board are now ready to take emergency financial action to solve the issue. They are currently unable to register new signings due to overspending on their salary limit. But to help balance the books, chiefs have now decided to put their own personal wealth at risk as part of a bank guarantee worth £6m. The Athletic report that the club expect all their new summer signings to be registered in time for the season. The deadline is at the end of this transfer window and any player not counted for will be banned from playing until it reopens in January. Barca signed goalkeeper Joan Garcia from rivals Espanyol and have used an injury loophole to register him. An official statement confirmed: "Barca informs that LaLiga 's independent medical panel have resolved that Marc Andre ter Stegen's injury meets the criteria of long-term injuries established in their current rulebook. 'Barca will proceed tomorrow to finalise the registration of goalkeeper Joan Garcia immediately.' Aside from Rashford, the Spanish champions still need to register Wojciech Szczesny after he penned a new contract and full-back Gerard Martin as he is now too old to count as a youth-team player. Gary Lineker gives Marcus Rashford Barcelona verdict after loan transfer from Man Utd Barca claim in their standoff with LaLiga that the sale of the new executive boxes at the revamped Nou Camp for £86.9m in December 2024 has seen them add to their salary limit. But the cash has not been approved by auditors and therefore cannot be added to the spending limit. Reports suggest Barca are hopeful the money is approved in the next few weeks.

Marcus Rashford was incredibly lucky to get Barcelona move and he faces a battle to break into the team, warns Steve McManaman
Marcus Rashford was extremely fortunate to land his 'incredible' Barcelona loan move from Manchester United, Steve McManaman has claimed. Both Rashford and United have struggled the last two seasons, with the forward failing to hit double figures in the Premier League on both occasions and the club limping to a 15th-place finish in Ruben Amorim 's debut campaign. And while Rashford now has a chance to prove himself in La Liga, McManaman isn't even sure where his playing time will come from. 'It's certainly important that he hits the ground running. I thought it was an incredible move for him, to be very honest,' the pundit began at an ESPN media event on Tuesday. 'The last couple of seasons at Manchester United, the way Manchester United performed - for him to leave and go to arguably one of the most exciting teams in Europe, I thought: 'He's got an amazing agent.' 'Where's he going to fit in? The answer is, I don't know. Because Raphinha, Robert [Lewandowski] and Lamine [Yamal], they had the most incredible season,' McManaman continued. 'So you think that is set in stone. You've got Ferran [Torres] behind them. They've moved a couple of players out - if anything, when you look at Barcelona's team, they need a couple of more defenders... but they go and bring in yet another forward. So we'll wait and see.' Rashford has played in four friendlies for Barca thus far, and opened his account earlier this month against South Korean side Daegu. He also produced a brutal open goal miss (to go along with an assist) against Como in the Joan Gamper Trophy over the weekend. The club has yet to officially register the England star due to its ongoing financial troubles, but McManaman is rooting for the 27-year-old, as ESPN prepares for another season of broadcasting La Liga games across it platforms in the US. He also suggested that Rashford could slot in as a No. 9 if Lewandowski faces fitness issues. 'I hope he's a huge success, and I hope he does play,' McManaman said of Rashford. 'Because it will benefit everybody if he does play.' Of course, Rashford is not the only Englishman preparing for his first La Liga season. Trent Alexander-Arnold has had a bit more time to settle following his blockbuster switch from Liverpool (and participation in the Club World Cup), but former Liverpool and Real Madrid star McManaman is hopeful his adaptation will further. 'He knows how to integrate into the Real Madrid side, he knows how to adapt. He needs to learn the language as soon as possible. I know he did his [introductory] press conference in Spanish, but his Spanish is not that good. That was just a bit of the smoke and mirrors...,' he said. 'But he made a big impression. He knows how important Liverpool is. He knows that he needs to keep the fans at Liverpool as happy as they possibly can, because he left under a cloud to certain extent, even though he got a lovely reception at the end of the season. He's back there a lot. He speaks to people a lot, because I've spoken to those people, so I don't think there's any any problem, really.' In McManaman's eyes, Alexander-Arnold and Rashford will win over their new fans and teammates by simply performing on the pitch. But the former Galactico did admit that earning the support of the Spanish faithful 'is a bit of a PR exercise' as well. 'You turn up, you say all the right things, you smile a lot... and then you try and score three on a Saturday.' That would be quite a debut for Rashford, whose Barcelona begin their La Liga campaign on Saturday against Mallorca. Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid will wait until Tuesday to kick off their campaign against Osasuna.
