'We see you': Joint operation to combat recent gun violence nets 13 arrests
A joint operation between the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office, Lake Charles Police and Louisiana State Police to address the recent gun violence in the community has netted 13 arrests in the past few weeks — and Sheriff Stitch Guillory has a message for those who are in possession of stolen firearms and are bragging about it online: 'We see you.' Over a six-week period between June and August, six shootings were reported within the parish. Four resulted in fatalities. In June, LCPD responded to a fatal shooting in the 200 block of North 1st Avenue and CPSO investigated the death of a man whose body was discovered on the side of the road near the 6700 block of U.S. 90 riddled with gunshot wounds. In July, CPSO investigated a fatal shooting at the Lake Charles Event Center Seawall, a Fourth of July shooting in the 1100 block of Allen Street in DeQuincy, and a shooting in the parking lot of Cowboys Night Club. On Aug. 5, LCPD responded to a fatal shooting in the parking lot of the On The Rocks bar — which is across the street from the McNeese State University Legacy Center. Guillory said the joint operation was underway before the On The Rocks shooting. 'We're not being reactive, we are proactive,' he said. 'Getting guns off our street and targeting criminals in and around local bar establishments where we know we're having problems (led to the operation). We decided to get ahead of the curve, it just so happened that the homicide at On The Rocks happened afterward.' Police Chief Shawn Caldwell said the arrests range from a 'variety of gun charges, a variety of drug charges and some traffic charges, as well.' During the arrests, seven illegally possessed firearms, more than 400 grams of marijuana, 12 Xanax pills and nine pressed Fentanyl pills were recovered. 'We take this serious. We're going to go out there, we're going to identify these people and we're going to arrest them,' Caldwell said. 'When we're done with that, we're going to turn them over to the DA.' District Attorney Stephen Dwight said two prosecutors on his team have been assigned to the joint operation to lend support and answer questions on searches and seizures. 'This is what the community wants to see; this is what we want to see,' Dwight said. 'We're getting guns off our streets and drugs off our streets and we're prepared to take these cases and run them through the judicial system.' Guillory said among the firearms confiscated was an AR-15. 'There's no purpose for that,' he said. 'What are you going to do with an AR-15?' To those college students fearful of patronizing local bars after their classes because of the recent violence, the sheriff said there has been no problems inside any of the facilities. 'It's just been in the parking lots, after they're closed,' he said. 'The bars themselves are safe.' Local ordinances require area bars and nightclubs to close at 2 a.m. Special details have been set up at these locations to clear out the parking lots after hours. Guillory said the men and women behind the badge signed up for this career because they want to make a difference in their community 'We're going to do everything we can, we're going to use every tool we have at our disposal to make our community safe and to keep our community safe,' he said. 'To the criminals out there, you want to go on social media and you want to post your stuff, we see it, too. That's our message. When you have drugs and you have them combined with a firearm, that's enhanced charges. I can promise you we're going to work with our federal partners to try and send you away for a very long time.'

3 charged with stealing $2M from Brink's truck amid string of heists in Philadelphia-area
Three men, including a former Brink's employee, have been charged with stealing more than $2 million from an armored truck in Philadelphia, the first in a string of such heists that have occurred in the area this summer, prosecutors said Aug. 13. Daishaun "Daisha" Hughes-Murchison, 30, Brian Wallace, 31, and Trayvine Jackson, 31, all of Philadelphia, were arrested and charged with robbery interfering with interstate commerce, and use of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. All three had their initial court appearances last week. Jackson has been ordered detained, and Wallace and Hughes-Murchison will have detention hearings later this week, prosecutors said. The three men are accused of carrying out a brazen robbery of a Brink's armored car on June 21 in Philadelphia's Port Richmond neighborhood. The robbery took place at around 8 a.m. local time near a Home Depot store, according to court documents. A Brink's armored truck driver was walking down the rear alley of the store, which was part of his scheduled route, when two men approached the driver with AR-style rifles. The men forced the driver to the ground, and took both his company-issued firearm and keys, court documents state. While one of the men stayed with the driver, the other entered the truck and stole a "significant amount of cash," prosecutors said. The two men then fled from the scene in a black Hyundai Sonata and a third man was seen on surveillance footage following in a silver Ford Fusion, according to court documents. Investigators later discovered that the Ford Fusion belonged to Hughes-Murchison, and the Hyundai Sonata was rented by Wallace, who returned the vehicle a few hours after the robbery. Surveillance footage showed that after returning the Hyundai Sonata, Wallace got into Hughes-Murchison's vehicle and they drove off, prosecutors said. Cellphone records also revealed that Wallace and Jackson were in the area of the car rental site at the time, court documents alleged, and the phones of Wallace and Hughes-Murchison were also tracked to Home Depot at the time of the robbery. According to court documents, Brink's told investigators that Jackson had been a Brink's employee until he was suspended and terminated after an internal investigation. Several Brink's armored truck robberies reported in Philadelphia-area Following the June 21 armed robbery, police reported three other incidents involving armored transport vehicles in and around Philadelphia. On June 26, a Loomis truck driver making a delivery at an Aldi store in the Lawncrest neighborhood of northeast Philadelphia was approached by two gunmen, CBS News and 6abc Action News reported. The suspects disarmed the driver and fled with about $1,000, according to the television stations. Then on July 2, police said another armored truck robbery involving Brink's occurred outside a Dollar General in the Holmesburg Shopping Center in northeast Philadelphia, NBC Philadelphia reported. The suspects, including one who was armed with an AR-style rifle, attempted to access the truck but were unable to due to the vehicle's security locking system, according to the station. And on July 15, a Brink's employee opened fire at two men whom he alleged attempted to rob him in northeast Philadelphia, NBC Philadelphia reported. The men fled from the scene, and no one was injured in the incident, according to the station. Police investigating another armored truck robbery this week Police in Cheltenham Township, a community bordering Philadelphia, are also investigating another armored truck robbery that occurred at around 10:28 a.m. local time on Aug. 12. The Cheltenham Township Police Department said in a statement on social media that officers responded to a report of a robbery at an H-Mart store. Investigators determined that two suspects had robbed a Brink's armored vehicle, "escaping with a large quantity of (U.S. currency)," police said. One suspect was armed with an AR-15-style pistol while the other was armed with a handgun, according to police. The suspects also stole the armored vehicle driver's handgun during the robbery before fleeing in a black Acura TLX. The vehicle was later found in west Philadelphia, police said, adding there were no injuries reported in the incident. Cheltenham police told the Associated Press and local media that the suspects stole between $700,000 and $800,000. Police are investigating whether the robbery is related to the four other recent incidents in the Philadelphia area, according to the AP and NBC News.

Thieves have stolen millions in a string of armored car heists in the Philadelphia area, authorities say
Authorities in Pennsylvania are investigating whether two suspects accused of stealing more than half a million dollars from an armored car this week are connected to a string of recent heists in the Philadelphia area, a police official said Wednesday. It isn't clear if the robbery Tuesday in suburban Philadelphia is linked to the others, said Lt. Andrew Snyder of the Cheltenham Township Police Department. But Snyder said his department is part of a joint investigation examining links to the previous thefts, including one in which suspects armed with AR15-style rifles are accused of stealing more than $2 million from a Brinks driver at a Philadelphia Home Depot in June. The U.S. Attorney's Office for Pennsylvania's Eastern District announced three arrests in that case Wednesday on robbery and firearms charges. The prosecutor's office identified one of the suspects, Trayvine Jackson, 31, as a former employee of Brinks, the same company involved in Tuesday's robbery. In an email, a lawyer for Jackson described his client as a dedicated family man with a long-standing work history and no criminal record. "At this early pre-indictment stage, it is pre-mature to comment on what are at this point mere allegations," said the lawyer, David Mischak. A lawyer for another defendant, Daishaun Hughes-Murchison, declined to comment. An attorney for the third suspect, Brian Wallace, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. NBC Philadelphia reported that much of the money in the June robbery was recovered. A spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department, which is involved in the joint investigation, referred questions about the probe to the FBI. A spokesperson for the bureau declined to comment. A spokesperson for Brinks did not respond to a request for comment. Tuesday's robbery occurred just before 10:30 a.m. at an H-Mart in Cheltenham, north of Philadelphia, the township's police department said in a news release. Security video released by the department showed a Brinks driver walking away from an armored truck. Seconds later, two people with hoods, gloves and guns can be seen running after the driver. Moments later, they run back the other way. One was armed with an AR15-style weapon, according to the news release. The other had a handgun. They disarmed the driver and are believed to have stolen roughly $700,000, according to the release. The robbers fled in a black Acura that was later found abandoned. In another case on July 15, a Brinks employee opened fire on two men who he said tried to rob him in northeast Philadelphia, NBC Philadelphia reported. The men fled in a black late-model Nissan with tinted windows, according to the station. In another case earlier that month, three people — including one armed with an AR-15 style rifle — are accused of robbing a Brinks employee in a nearby part of Philadelphia, the station reported. It isn't clear if there have been any arrests in the case or how much was stolen. A spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
