Victoria Mboko is going to the National Bank Open final, but the Canadian athlete wants to 'live as normal a life as possible'
If you're paying any attention to the world of tennis, you've likely come across the name Victoria Mboko. The Canadian athlete may only be 18, but she's climbing rankings at a swift pace — and she has the work ethic to show she belongs at the top.
The Charlotte, N.C.-born, Toronto-raised daughter of Congolese parents might be new to the scene, but she's making every moment count for her first season on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) circuit. Mboko started the season as the 350th-ranked player in the world, but has quickly surged to a career-high 85th spot in the WTA rankings. She's now projected to climb into at least the top 50, possibly the top 25 if she wins the National Bank Open — which she has the chance to do on Thursday night.
"Tennis takes up so much of my life that sometimes, it's really hard to not even talk about tennis or even go a day without talking about it because it's your livelihood," she explains during a conversation with Yahoo Canada for OT Diaries. "It's kind of your job."

On Wednesday night, Mboko defeated no. 9 seed Elena Rybakina, propelling her into Thursday's final. Earlier this week, she defeated no. 51 seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiroshe just two days after stunning fans on Saturday when she defeated no. 1 seed Coco Gauff. It was billed as the tournament's top match, and the Canadian rising star beat the American — who has a career-high ranking of second in the WTA — in just 62 minutes. She's the first Canadian player to defeat three Grand Slam champions in a WTA event in the Open Era.
In March, she earned her first WTA Tour-level win in a first-round match against Camila Osorio at the Miami Open. Later in May, she qualified for the Italian Open, beating Arianna Zucchini, but later lost to Coco Gauff. But a comeback at the French Open saw Mboko land her first Grand Slam victory against Lulu Sun.
While the Burlington, Ont.-resident rarely spends time without a tennis racket in her hand, it's the outdoor jogs, dog walks and family connections that keep her grounded. Keep reading to learn how Mboko spends her free time, why she avoids setting goals for herself and more.

Everyone can see what might be happening during a tennis match, but what does your life look like off the court?
My rest days are a lot more relaxed and chill. I'm a lot more free in my mind because I don't have as much to do. I feel like on those days, I sleep in a ton and I take my mornings very slow. I probably go to my local cafe and do some work on my computer. I really don't think about tennis at all.
How do you find rest and upkeep your mental health when you're away from tennis?
On my days off, I feel like I'm running a lot of errands to make up for the time that I don't have when I'm practicing or playing tennis. I also like to go shopping a lot. I like to go to Sephora, Zara or H&M and get more clothes, or skincare and makeup. I like to go out with my friends a lot too, and just do fun things here and there.

At the end of the day, sometimes I'll do some stretching or yoga — but not in a tennis sense. Just as an overall way to be more relaxed.
Do you play other sports?
I don't really do any other sports or anything, but I like to go on runs a lot, like outdoor runs along some trails. Especially when I'm home, I like to go on my trail and just have a little jog around my park.

That's not even really related to tennis. Sometimes, say if I have a couple days off and I still want to be active because I'm more of an active person, I'll go on runs or walk my dog.
I presume tennis is a very intense, aggressive, mentally-rigorous sport. Does running help you mentally?
Oh, it definitely does. If I'm always thinking about tennis and there's really nothing else going on, you're kind of in a breakdown a little bit. You're not going to feel that much freedom within yourself, so I think it's really important to have those kinds of things.
We have a dog at home, so she's really great. I bring her everywhere. Especially when I come home, it's really nice to have her.
I love that. What's her name and her breed?
Ivy. She's a Yorkshire Terrier.
I'd love to discuss some of your recovery techniques. Is there anything that you use?
I do a lot of cupping, but my go-to is the Normatec Boots. I just put on my Normatec Boots, put it on the highest setting and do it for as long as I possibly can while scrolling through Instagram or TikTok.

I think it helps a lot with the blood flow and after you take it off, especially if you do a very intense session of it, then your legs feel a little bit flimsy.
You previously said you don't like to set goals for yourself. Can you share more about that?
The reason why I usually say that or like to think that way is because in tennis, you never know what's going to happen. It's such an up and down sport. One week you can have a really good week, and some other weeks you don't have as good of a week.
Everything is super unexpected and that's why, for myself, I don't like to set goals, just because mentally, I always want to be in a good place. And I want everything to be taken in a positive way, and I think that's good for me because you don't really get too down on yourself and you always look ahead. That, overall, really helps you as a person to grow and as a player to not really set high expectations for yourself. That can catch up to you.

You've also said Serena Williams is a major role model for you. What's it like looking up to her game and her strength in the sport itself?
Growing up, I always used to watch her playing the Rogers Cup and/or on TV playing the U.S. Open. I've always loved watching her matches and I've always loved the way she plays, and I think that she has so much presence on the court. She was such a legend at the time. I always felt like I wanted to be like her.

Then again, I'm not her — I'm my own person. But she's always been my role model and I've always loved to see her play.
Do you have any other role models that you follow for your everyday life?
I'd probably say my sister. She's a lot older than me but she's always someone who is able to find solutions for me when some things go wrong. I just love the person she is, so I think I look up to her as well.
That's so sweet. How many siblings do you have?
I have three older siblings.
I read that they all also play tennis. Are they competitive or supportive?
I'd say I was more competitive as a younger kid because they're a lot older than me. But for them, they were always super supportive. It was never ever really competitive. They all wanted the best for me.
Even until today. Sometimes they'll come to my tournaments and support me. I'm so lucky to have siblings that are always there for me. Especially as a little sister, I think it's almost by law for them to come and help me out when they can.

You're a powerhouse in tennis right now. What's it like in terms of your family?
They're super supportive of me. Also as a family, we know it's really important to stay very kind of in your own bubble, because sometimes things can get really hectic.

They do a really good job of keeping me grounded and not get caught up in media and everything else. I think having family and close friends are so important because they're the people who've known you since you were a baby. So, they've been doing a really great job of helping me stay really focused.
You're in the media so much nowadays. Coco Gauff said you're playing top-level tennis. What's it like being in such a bright spotlight at such a young age?
I don't really like to look at stuff that's about me. So, I never really noticed how big the noise is, or how things are going about on social media. But I can tell things have started to get bigger.
I'm disconnected from it all, which also helps me live my everyday life more normally. I just want to live as normal a life as possible and I just like to keep things to myself.

Games on: Opening ceremony gets Canada Games off to energetic start in St. John's
ST. JOHN'S — If the opening ceremony was any indication, the next 17 days of competition at the 2025 Canada Games are going to be full of energy and excitement. Thousands of young athletes from every Canadian province and territory marched into the sold-out Mary Brown's Centre to loud cheers, but the loudest were reserved for the hosts. Team Newfoundland and Labrador had the audience on their feet, waving flags, and cheering at the top of their voices as athletes entered to the upbeat sounds of Great Big Sea's Ordinary Day. Canada Games Host Society CEO Karen Sherriffs said the opening ceremony was a way to introduce "the richness of our local culture" but it also set the table for what's to come. "It's that 'welcome' to all these athletes that's gonna really set the stage for two really unforgettable weeks of competition," she said. "It's pretty magical when all those athletes start to come in and are the centre of attention as they walk in by province and territory. "These athletes have trained for over four years to get to this point …[and] this is the first time that they may represent their province or territory on a national stage." Sherriffs said the opening ceremony creates a lasting memory for many athletes simply because it brings everyone together. "We often hear from Canada Games alumni – whether that's athletes, staff or officials or coaches – sometimes our most memorable moment is the opening and closing ceremonies. Because it's really that sense of unity, pride [and] excitement that they carry with them," Sherriffs said. "When they walk into that [arena], it doesn't matter what province territory you're from, that crowd and the audience is cheering for them." They're the start," Le May Doan said. "For every person that's been a part of this journey, this is where it starts. "The opening ceremony is, for me, always emotional. Because it's the culmination, and it's the beginning." Le May Doan also delivered a message of motivation to the more than 2,000 athletes on hand for the opening ceremony. "You have so much support here in this arena, and in St. John's, and across the country," she said. "I want to say to you today, savour the pride of representing your community, your province or territory. Use that pride as fuel, as you carry that further and push your limits." Baggs's goal is to represent Canada at the Paralympics and he said these Games offer a way for young athletes to showcase their talents as they progress in their sporting career. "These Games provide an arena for the best young athletes in Canada to really show off their skills, show off what they've been working on [and] how hard they've trained." Baggs said there are quite a few reasons for sports fans to watch the action from St. John's over the next 17 days. "The ability to just cheer for your province, cheer for the athletes that have worked so hard to see that all the effort they put in [has] finally paid off," he said. "It's very entertaining to watch and it's very uplifting, very emotional, dramatic stuff." St. John's Mayor Danny Breen said he's excited to take in as much action at the Games as he can because of the enthusiasm and heart shown by Canada Games athletes. "I'm a big softball [and] baseball fan. I still play softball – or try anyway – so I'm looking forward to [it]," he said. "I was at the Canada Games in P.E.I. [in 2023] and even sports that I wasn't that familiar with I watched because there was such excitement, and the camaraderie amongst the athletes – they're just putting their all into it, and how supportive they were of each other. A six-pack of big names on the PGA Tour Champions — Steven Alker, Lee Janzen, Tom Lehman, Corey Pavin, Boo Weekley and Y.E. Yang — round out the 78-man field that is now set for the 13th edition of the Rogers Charity Classic hosted this coming week at Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club. A shootout is sure to unfold at Canada's lone stop on the circuit with the field now boasting the top-three players on the Charles Schwab Cup Money List, thanks to Alker penning his name to the tee sheet. The 53-year-old Kiwi, who was the 2024 Charles Schwab Cup winner, has been one of the hottest players over the last three years while racking up nine tittles on the senior swing. 'It's been a fun ride, and I'm just so happy to be out here on tour,' said Alker, whose most consistent golf prior to his breakout on the PGA Tour Champions came on the Canadian Tour when he finished in the top-12 in seven out of eight tournaments in 2000 that included one victory at the McDonald's Championship in Prince Edward Island. 'Everything has come around and I'm enjoying my game. 'Canada is a beautiful part of the world, and I am looking forward to getting up there again to play this year.' Blue Jays' Bo Bichette gets $200 million contract update ahead of free agency originally appeared on The Sporting News Bo Bichette is back to normal. After a nightmare 2024 season, Bichette is again leading the American League in hits for the Toronto Blue Jays. He's making last year look more and more like an outlier, and it's going to be a very good thing for his wallet. Bichette is slated to be a free agent this offseason, and he's going to get a nine-figure deal. The question will become just how high that dollar value can rise. MORE: Mookie Betts admits 'this season's over' after brutal struggles MLB Trade Rumors writer Steve Adams thinks Bichette can get up to $200 million if he finishes this season well. This is the full breakdown released by Adams on Saturday morning: Bichette has shaken off a pedestrian start to the season and, more importantly, made last year's lack of production in an injury-ruined campaign feel like a distant memory. He's hitting .300/.341/.468 in 508 plate appearances overall, but that jumps to a stout .306/.347/.508 when looking at his past 380 plate appearances. Bichette's power was M.I.A. for the season's first five weeks or so. All 15 of Bichette's home runs this season have come since May 3. He's been on an otherworldly tear of late, hitting .404/.449/.633 over the past month. He's still not walking much (5.3%), but Bichette's 14.8% strikeout rate is the lowest of his career. He's averaging 91 mph off the bat with a hearty 48.6% hard-hit rate. It's still a swing-happy approach (hence the lack of walks), as evidenced by a 33.9% chase rate on balls of the plate. That's about six percentage points higher than average but stands as the lowest mark of Bichette's career. Even with those swings, however, Bichette's contact rate is plus. That's particularly true when Bichette zeroes in on balls over the plate; his 91.2% contact rate on balls in the strike zone ranks 19th in all of baseball. Bichette has slowed down noticeably in recent seasons. He's swiped just five bases this year, 20 short of his career-high 25 set back in 2021. It's unlikely Bichette will ever return to those levels of thievery. His average sprint speed back in '21 was 28 feet per second — faster than nearly four out of five big leaguers. This year, he's averaging 26.2 ft/sec and sitting in just the 22nd percentile of MLB players, per Statcast. Defense is going to be the biggest knock on Bichette in free agency. He's never been a great defensive shortstop, and some teams will probably prefer him at second base from the jump. Both Defensive Runs Saved (-6) and Outs Above Average (-6) feel he's been well below average with the glove this year. Bichette can probably handle shortstop for another couple seasons, but it's not likely that he'll finish a long-term contract at the position. He's not the same type of defender as well-compensated shortstops Willy Adames (seven years, $182MM), Dansby Swanson (seven years, $177MM), Javier Baez (six years, $140MM) and Trevor Story (six years, $140MM). However, he's hitting the market earlier than any of those players did — ahead of his age-28 season. That extra year of his prime should allow Bichette, who'll reject a qualifying offer, to land in the range of those other recent top-tier shortstops in free agency. If he sustains his absurd summer production (or anything close to it), he could push for $200MM or more. The only player above him is outfielder Kyle Tucker, currently of the Cubs. It's also an incredible time for Bichette to be available positionally. There are no other shortstops in Adams' top-10 free agents or even his honorable mention list. That means that any team in need of a SS will be looking at Bichette. The Blue Jays should definitely consider bringing him back. He aligns with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as two centerpieces for a bunch of years to come. Vladdy already got paid, and although Toronto could've paid Bo before the season, his rough 2024 season probably made that a trickier process. Instead, Bichette is hurtling toward free agency as the hitting machine he has always been. The money bag will soon follow.
