Wine producers in Italy's Valpolicella brace for US tariffs
NEGRAR, Italy (Reuters) -Italy's wine producers, already struggling amid a slowing economy and a strengthening euro, face a further challenge after wine and spirits were left out of the U.S.-EU trade deal agreed on Sunday.
Discussions are continuing regarding any tariff exemptions for the wines and spirits sectors in the framework trade deal, a senior European Commission official said on Monday, a day after the U.S. and EU agreed a 15% tariff on U.S. imports of most other goods from the European Union.
Producers in the winemaking region of Valpolicella, in northern Italy, warn that on the top of any new tariff, their exports will be impacted by the depreciating dollar, which has lost more than 12% against the euro this year, making European goods more expensive for U.S. consumers.
"This is already pretty bad," said Andrea Sartori of the Sartori winery in Negrar di Valpolicella, founded in 1898.
"I'm very worried about the economy overall. And we all know that wine consumption doesn't thrive very well when we have seen economic crises in the past," Sartori told Reuters. "So this could be a domino effect that could hit the wine trade as well."
The United States is the biggest export market for Italy's wine and spirits producers, generating sales of 2 billion euros ($2.3 billion) last year, or a quarter of their global sales, according to industry group Federvini.
Lamberto Frescobaldi, president of Italian wine producer association UIV, said on Sunday that 15% tariffs on wine would result in a loss of 317 million euros ($372.63 million) over the next 12 months.
Wine producers are already facing subdued domestic demand, with the Italian economy forecast to grow just 0.6% this year, according to national statistics bureau ISTAT, although premium wines are set to do better as deeper-pocketed consumers are less price sensitive.
They include Valpolicella's top end Amarone wine.
"Amarone is the least sensitive because it's already a premium wine with a pretty high price. So I don't think it would be a dramatic change," Sartori said.
"I'm more worried about Valpolicella and Ripasso, which are mainstream, and a price increase could possibly damage the sales," he added

P&G beats on earnings, warns of $1 billion tariff hit
Procter & Gamble (PG) is taking a cautious approach to the next twelve months as it navigates uncertain consumers and Trump tariffs. The company said Tuesday it will see a $1 billion hit to profits in its new fiscal year as a result of tariffs. It offered mix EPS guidance as a result, with the bottom end of the range below analyst forecasts. Shares rose slightly in pre-market trading as fourth fiscal quarter results beat estimates. P&G's earnings are being overshadowed by a surprise change atop the C-suite ahead of the results. The consumer products giant announced late Monday that Shailesh Jejurikar will succeed CEO Jon Moeller on Jan. 1, 2026. Jejurikar is currently the company's COO but has been with P&G since 1989. He has helped lead some of P&G's most important businesses around the world, notably a fabric care business led by the Tide brand. Moeller has been the CEO of P&G since November 2021. He has been with the company since 1988, holding positions such as COO and CFO before landing the top job from David Taylor. Moeller will assume the position of executive chairman of P&G. "We are not surprised as we believe Mr. Jejurikar's was the natural successor to CEO Moeller after his appointment to the COO position in October of 2021. We also think Jejurikar's experience in both developed markets and emerging market and as the CEO of global fabric care and home care gives him enough experience to lead P&G," said JP Morgan analyst Andrea Teixeira. The Nutriment Company acquires cat food supplier Purrform
Acquisitive pet-food group The Nutriment Company has snapped up another UK business, buying cat-food supplier Purrform. Financial terms were not disclosed. In a statement, The Nutriment Company said the deal 'adds a new dimension of species-specific expertise to its brand portfolio'. Founded in 2011, Purrform offers recipes said to closely mirror a cat's natural prey-based diet. According to The Nutriment Company, it uses 100% human-grade meat, offal and bone, free from preservatives or additives. The Stockholm-headquartered group believes Purrform's acquisition 'comes at a strategic time' as cat ownership is rising across Europe. Citing FEDIAF, a trade body representing the European pet food industry, The Nutriment Company said approximately 108 million cats live in European households, highlighting the 'significant market potential for natural nutrition tailored specifically for cats'. As part of The Nutriment Company, Purrform's products are expected to become 'more available in retail' with support from the wider group's 'extensive distribution network', reaching stores across the UK and continental Europe. Anders Kristiansen, CEO of The Nutriment Company, said Purrform's 'heart-felt dedication to crafting species-appropriate, high-quality meals for cats aligns perfectly with our mission'. He added: 'We are excited to help scale Purrform's impact and bring their unique offering to more cat owners across Europe.'
