Yankees SS Anthony Volpe makes 12th error in loss at Toronto, tying him for most in AL
TORONTO (AP) — New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Anthony Volpe has made 'a few too many' fielding errors this season after the shortstop made his 12th miscue of the season in Monday's 4-1 loss at Toronto. He's now tied for most in the American League.
Volpe won the AL Gold Glove as a rookie shortstop in 2023, when he made 17 errors in 1,346 2/3 innings. He had 16 errors in 1,416 2/3 innings last year.
Volpe has played 846 2/3 defensive innings this season. He matched Kansas City's Jonathan India for the AL lead with an errant throw to first base that led to a run in Toronto's four-run fifth inning.
'I rushed the throw and pulled it and gave Goldy (first baseman Paul Goldschmidt) a tough pick to handle,' Volpe said.
It came one play after third baseman Oswald Peraza also made a throwing error that allowed a run to score.
Boone acknowledged that Volpe's error total is high but insisted he's not worried about the shortstop's overall defensive performance.
'He's still making a lot of rangy plays, he's still making a lot of plays,' Boone said. 'He just hasn't been as consistent as he has in his first two years. That's three or four plays we're talking about.'
Volpe had an ice pack on his left shoulder following the game but both he and Boone insisted there are no health concerns.
Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodon said he hasn't lost faith in Volpe.
'Just hang with him,' Rodón said. 'He'll be better.'
San Francisco Giants shortstop Willy Adames had major league-high 13 errors entering play Monday. Cincinnati's Elly De La Cruz and San Diego's Manny Machado also had 12 errors.
The Yankees are 2-6 against Toronto this season, losing the past five meetings. New York is 10-17 against AL East opponents.
'It's been a month now where we haven't been our best,' Boone said. 'We need to, obviously, start playing better consistently and putting wins in the win column. That's all we can really worry about.'

Should the Yankees trade prospect Spencer Jones?
Yahoo Sports senior MLB analysts Jordan Shusterman and Jake Mintz explain why it's the perfect time for New York to deal their hot-hitting outfield prospect. Hear the full conversation on the 'Baseball Bar-B-Cast' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you View more Video Transcript I have a couple of thoughts here as someone who thinks a lot about Spencer Jones. One, the Yankees should absolutely trade him at this deadline, like 100%. I hope Spencer Jones gets to have a long big league career. If he wants to be with the Yankees, I hope that that happens. However, his value is never going to be higher than it is right now. Him hitting 13 home runs in 19 games right in front of the deadline when the Yankees have holes to fill, just, just go, just do it right now. Now, you mentioned that he's doing his best Aaron Judge impression. That is more recent from a mechanical standpoint than you might realize, No, Judge is a righty, Jones is a lefty. Only over the last year or a bit more has Jones kind of fully adopted the Judge swing, the Turner Man style back hip load, one leg type deal. The stance is incredibly ugly looking; it is not fluid. And if it looks like someone who's never, who hasn't played a lot of baseball, like when he stands there, but when he makes contact, holy freaking crap. And the one other important thing that's worth noting about Spencer Jones is that he could probably play a little bit of center, right? And I think that gives him a slightly higher floor than what he's being given credit for. Well, and this is why the spit on the Yankees, if that is to be, because I think your points about the deadline are totally valid. He's only played center. Now, I don't know what that means because so did Jason Dominguez, and he's like one of the worst left fielders I've ever seen. So I don't know how to project any Yankees defender at this point, so I think we can stay focused on the bat, but that's the other thing, as I say, oh well, he's got to be up at some point. But like I, like I also said about Suarez, the Yankees are not craving home runs right now. So that's why I think, to your point, trading him for something that they actually do need would make a lot of sense, even though you have to imagine there would be some level of fear that like, oh my God, what if he is 60% of Aaron Judge, that's a hell of a hitter. Jaguars DE Josh Hines-Allen says his 7-year-old son Wesley is recovering from leukemia
Associated Press JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen announced Friday that his 7-year-old son, Wesley, is recovering from cancer. Hines-Allen and his wife, Kaitlyn, provided the news in a three-minute video released on social media. They said the diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia came after Wesley spiked a fever and started bleeding from a tooth days before last year's season finale, which Hines-Allen missed for personal reasons. 'It just kind of like hit me, and then nothing else mattered after that,' Hines-Allen said in the video. Wesley underwent chemotherapy for six months. He has a few treatments remaining before he gets to ring the bell next month at Nemours Children's Health in Jacksonville. 'Wesley is doing great," Kaitlyn said in the video. "He's swimming every day. He's running around. He's playing sports.' Added Hines-Allen: 'He's got back to being the big brother that he is.' Hines-Allen and his wife also announced Friday that their nonprofit foundation, Four One For All, will launch a season-long campaign called "Four One For Hope" to give back to four cancer-focused non-profits each month of the NFL regular season. Money raised will go to Nemours Children's Hospital in September, the American Cancer Society in October, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville in October and the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation in December. 'Our goal is to ensure that families going through something similar feel the same level of love and support as we did,' Hines-Allen said in a statement. Hines-Allen is a two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher who has 53 career sacks in six seasons in Jacksonville, two shy of the franchise record held by Tony Brackens. He signed a five-year, $141.25 million contract that included $76.5 million fully guaranteed before the 2024 season. ___ AP NFL: recommended Item 1 of 3

Jordan Hicks retires, leaving Browns with more concerns at linebacker
Associated Press BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns situation at linebacker became a bigger concern on Friday after Jordan Hicks announced his retirement. Hicks missed the first two days of training camp with what the team called a personal matter. The 33-year-old Hicks posted his retirement announcement on Instagram after 10 years in the league. 'Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most importantly it showed me who I am outside the game,' Hicks said in his post. 'I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I'm proud of what l accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I've become because of it.' Hicks played 12 games last season and was third on the team with 78 tackles. The Browns were already down one middle linebacker going into camp with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out for the season with a neck injury. Hicks was a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He also played for Arizona and Minnesota before signing as an unrestricted free agent with Cleveland last year. 'I'm truly just happy for him, just to leave on your own terms, do it the way you want to do it. Just having a great career,' linebacker Jerome Baker said. Rookie Carson Schwesinger, the 33rd overall pick in April's draft, could move into Hick's starting spot. Nathaniel Watson was Hicks' backup at the end of last season. 'When you lose a player due to injury or retirement or whatever, there's opportunities that come up for younger players and in this day and age, young players play early at these positions," coach Kevin Stefanski said before the start of Friday's practice. "They may be counted on and that's why we're working so hard. That's why we're trying to be efficient with everything we do, maximize every rep and minute that we have with these young men to get them ready to play.' Devin Bush, one of the other starters at linebacker, could miss part of the season if he is suspended by the league for violations of the personal conduct policy. Bush was charged with simple assault and harassment after being arrested in May outside of Pittsburgh. ___ AP NFL: recommended Item 1 of 3
