Sword attacker who murdered schoolboy in rampage jailed for at least 40 years

A martial arts enthusiast who 'snuffed out' the life of a 14-year-old schoolboy with a 60cm samurai sword has been jailed for at least 40 years.
Marcus Monzo, 37, nearly decapitated Daniel Anjorin with a 'devastating and unsurvivable' blow and attacked five other people during a 20-minute rampage in Hainault, east London, in April last year.
Witnesses described the Spanish-Brazilian national dropping to his knees with both arms raised while screaming 'in delight' at the senseless killing.
Monzo, of Newham, east London, was found guilty of murder, as well as three counts of attempted murder, wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.
Daniel's father, Dr Ebenezer Anjorin, was in court to hear Monzo being convicted of murdering his son.
Earlier, he condemned Monzo's 'wicked' actions as he described losing his son as his 'worst nightmare'.
Speaking publicly about it for the first time, Dr Anjorin said in a statement: 'On April 30, 2024, at approximately 7am, Daniel left for school. At approximately 7.15am I was informed by my eldest son that Daniel had been stabbed on the road near my house.
'I ran outside the house and just across the road I saw a hunched-up body by the side of the road.
'I did not realise that it was Daniel at first but, as I got closer, I recognised the school sports clothes and saw his face.
'He was lying in a pool of blood and had a deep cut to his face running from the side of his mouth to the back of his neck. He was motionless. I knew at once that he was dead, but I reached down, called his name and held his head.'
After a few minutes, he called Daniel's mother, who screamed and cried when she arrived home and saw paramedics trying to resuscitate her son, who died later in hospital.
Dr Anjorin said he could not begin to describe the 'pain and anguish' the family felt at losing Daniel, who was academically gifted and enjoyed sports and music.
He said: 'We will not see him get married or have children. All the normal things parents hope for their children.
'All these hopes and aspirations have been cruelly snatched away from us through the wicked actions of Marcus Monzo.
'It has been the worst nightmare experience of our lives. To have to go through the pain of losing a child in such a cruel and savage way. No family should have to go through this.'
The judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, paid tribute to his 'calm and dignified manner' sitting through the trial, saying he had showed 'a composure most of us would find impossible'.

He said: 'On April 30 last year, the weather was good, and the streets were starting to fill, with people on their way to work and even a few children heading off early to school.
'Over the 20 minutes that followed, that peaceful, busy scene was devastated as members of the public were attacked, police officers were gravely injured and a clever, talented, much loved young boy was killed by a savage blow with a sword.' More Trending
The trial of the former Amazon delivery driver – who had a blue belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu – was told he also attacked a pedestrian, two police officers and a couple in their home before he was arrested by police.
Afterwards, he likened events to the Hollywood movie The Hunger Games and claimed to have an alternative personality of a 'professional assassin'.
He had liked posts on X that praised Adolf Hitler, antisemitic conspiracy theories and misogynistic incel material.
Tom Little KC, prosecuting, told the Old Bailey Monzo had 'a clear intention to kill a number of people… it did not matter who they were, or indeed how old they were'.

50 arrests made in police probe into Scottish 'gang war'
Officers said on Friday that an 18-year-old man is the latest person to be arrested and charged in connection with Operation Portaledge, the ongoing investigation into violent incidents in the east and west of the country. The chief constable's report states: 'Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police following the fatal shootings in Fuengirola. 'At this time, there is no evidence to suggest these deaths are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge or that the shooting was planned within Scotland.' A man has been arrested in Liverpool in connection with the deaths in Malaga. The 44-year-old man appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday June 14 and has been remanded in custody, police said.

Ecuador's most wanted Narco found cowering under kitchen counter

He's now facing possible extradition to the US on seven charges issued against him in April this year. Villamar was convicted of murder and supplying the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel with tonnes of cocaine in 2011. But he escaped from Guayaquil Regional Prison 18 months ago, and the trail went cold until earlier this month. In early June, several members of his inner circle, including his brother and relatives of his partner, were arrested for allegedly laundering £17.5 million. He was found hiding in his hometown of Manta, with the Ecuadorian Army sharing images of its impressive layout on social media. Interior Minister John Reimberg said soldiers used an excavator to access the bunker during a 10-hour military operation. President Daniel Noboa called Fito one of the main targets of his war against organised crime in the country, which has one of the highest homicide rates in Latin America. Child who was strip searched at school worried she ‘will never feel normal'
A woman who was strip searched as a child at school has said she will 'never feel normal again' after two officers were sacked. Child Q, who was 15 at the time, was strip-searched by female Met officers in 2020 after she was wrongly suspected of carrying cannabis at her east London school. Later it emerged that she was also on her period, with the girl, who is now an adult, saying she felt 'demeaned'. A tribunal has since found the actions of two police officers involved amounted to gross misconduct, describing the incident as 'unjustified and humiliating'. Trainee Det Con Kristina Linge and PC Rafal Szmydynski were sacked, while PC Victoria Wray was given a final warning. In a statement through her lawyers, Child Q said: 'Someone walked into the school, where I was supposed to feel safe, took me away from the people who were supposed to protect me and stripped me naked, while on my period. 'After waiting more than four years I have come every day to the gross misconduct hearing for answers and although I am relieved that two of the officers have been fired I believe that the Metropolitan Police still has a huge amount of work to do if they are to win back the confidence of Black Londoners.' The officers involved had failed to acquire proper authorisation at sergeant level which went against the force's policy. The panel has heard that black schoolchildren were more likely to be treated as adults rather than their white peers. But neither age or race were found to be a factor in the way the search was conducted. Cdr Kevin Southworth said in a statement: 'The experience of Child Q should never have happened and was truly regrettable. 'We have sincerely apologised to Child Q since this incident happened.
