Former Kansas City Chiefs OL Lucas Niang signs with the Washington Commanders

Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Lucas Niang, according to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, has signed a new deal with the Washington Commanders to join them at training camp. The Chiefs selected Niang in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft, highly touted out of TCU, with hopes of him becoming the starting offensive tackle of the future. He opted out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns and was named the starting right tackle for the 2021 season, but was limited due to various injuries. In Week 17, while at left tackle, he suffered a torn patellar tendon, ending his year. From 2022 to 2024, Niang floated between the reserve/PUP (physically unable to perform) list and practice squad for the remainder of his Chiefs career. He was a member of both the Super Bowl LVII and Super Bowl LVIII teams but wasn't active. Niang will battle for a chance to make the Commanders in camp and continue his NFL career after several setbacks.

Bill Walsh Fellowship coach makes an impact for the Kansas City Chiefs in camp

The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for an opportunity to return to the Super Bowl, and the journey begins with training camp. During the training session, guests from the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship will join their coaching staff. Juan Castillo is a longtime offensive line coach who spent years in the NFL as a coordinator under Chiefs head coach Andy Reid in the past and is in attendance at Missouri Western State University. He's been name-dropped by multiple Chiefs players since the start of training camp and praised by Reid. "Yeah, Juan's (Castillo) coaching at Michigan, or at least helping out there. So, he came in, (he) brings a ton of experience. (Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck) knows him, and likes him, and he's in coaching, you know? Andy's given him an opportunity to step in and do some stuff with him," said Reid to reporters during the week, "And (the) same way with Cam (former T Cameron Erving). Cam played for him (Andy Heck), so he knows our stuff, (he) wants to get into coaching. He just got done playing and is looking at possibly coaching." In 2024, he was an offensive line coach for the UCLA Bruins and currently works as an offensive assistant for the Michigan Wolverines. "Juan Castillo is a highly respected guy in the offensive line community. Everybody knows him," said Creed Humphrey to reporters, "He's someone that has a wealth of knowledge, just really smart, understands technique really well, and he loves working with guys. He's been having a lot of fun being able to teach techniques and hang out with the guys and just kind of share his wisdom." This year, the Chiefs and Castillo are joined at training camp by numerous other Bill Walsh Fellowship coaches: Hillary Butler, Mike Bond, Ryan Davis, CJ Edwards, Cam Erving, Eli Hamidzada, AJ Hampton, Nate Pagan, and Marc Saldana.

ESPN reveals ranking for the Kansas City Chiefs' projected 2025 roster

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to produce one of the best rosters in the league, earning them consecutive AFC West titles and appearances in the Super Bowl. The new season will see several changes, but the goal remains the same: hoisting another Vince Lombardi trophy. ESPN recently published an article ranking 2025 NFL rosters with the best projected lineups. The writers listed Kansas City at No. 5 while tagging an impactful player from the Chiefs as their X-Factor. "X factor for 2025: Wide receiver Rashee Rice, pending disciplinary action from the league. Is this the season Rice truly ascends to the No. 1 receiver role in Kansas City -- and puts up the numbers to prove it? The signs are there. The Chiefs gradually increased Rice's role throughout his rookie season in 2023, but he still finished with 2.6 yards per route run." In the article, ESPN NFL analysts Mike Clay, Aaron Schatz, and Seth Walder provide a more detailed discussion of the Chiefs. The Baltimore Ravens finished atop this year's roster projection rankings.
