'Boasted friendship with Trump proving to be hollow': Jairam Ramesh targets PM Modi; lists '4 facts'
In a post on X, Ramesh pointed to four recent developments that, according to him, show the Modi government's "failure" in handling foreign affairs.
Ramesh accused the PM's 'drum-beaters and cheerleaders' of misleading the public with huge claims about diplomatic success.
The Congress leader referred to recent US actions involving Pakistan and US President Donald Trump's repeated claims about intervening in the India-Pakistan conflict.
'The abject failure of Indian diplomacy, especially in the past two months, is revealed most tellingly by four facts. These expose the tall claims made by the Prime Minister and his drum-beaters and cheerleaders,' Ramesh said.
Ramesh's 4 'facts' that 'expose' PM's claims''
Here are the four 'facts' the Congress leader mentioned:
Since May 10, 2025, President Trump has claimed 25 times that he personally intervened to stop Operation Sindoor, threatening India and Pakistan that if they didn't bring the war to a halt, they would not have a trade agreement with the USA.
On June 10, 2025, Gen. Michael Kurilla, the head of the powerful
US Central Command
, hails Pakistan as a phenomenal partner of the US in countering terrorism.
On June 18, 2025, President Trump held an unprecedented luncheon meeting with the Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir in the White House. Two months earlier, Munir's inflammatory, incendiary, and communally provocative remarks had provided the backdrop to the brutal
Pahalgam terror attacks
on April 22, 2025.
Just yesterday, July 25, 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and thanked Pakistan for its partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional stability
Ramesh concluded his post with a reminder of Modi's 2020 statement on China, suggesting it had already cost the country dearly. 'The PM's clean chit to China on June 19, 2020, has already cost India heavily. His much boasted friendship with President Trump is now proving to be hollow.'

Texas Democrats flee state to block Republican-led congressional map proposal backed by Trump
More than 30 Texas Democrats are leaving the state to stop a vote on a Republican-backed plan to redraw congressional districts. The move aims to block the creation of five new Republican-leaning seats. read more More than two dozen Texas Democrats are leaving the state in an effort to block a controversial vote scheduled for Monday that could result in the creation of five new Republican-leaning seats in the US House of Representatives. Around 30 Democratic lawmakers are reportedly heading to Illinois, where they plan to remain for a week. Their departure is intended to deny the Republican-controlled House the quorum needed to proceed with the vote on redrawing the congressional map. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In a strongly worded statement, the Texas Democrats accused their Republican counterparts of 'cowardly surrendering' to Donald Trump's push for a redistricting plan designed to cement Republican influence and 'advance his disastrous policies'. 'By denying Trump's loyalists a quorum, Texas Democratic lawmakers are blocking his redistricting agenda,' the statement declared. The plan to flee the state is said to have been coordinated with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, who met with the Texas Democratic caucus last month and has directed his staff to provide them with logistical support during their stay. The redistricting proposal has drawn fierce criticism, with Democrats accusing Texas Governor Greg Abbott of using disaster relief as leverage. They claim he delayed aid to victims of last month's Guadalupe River flooding to pressure lawmakers into backing the redrawn map. 'We're leaving Texas to stand up for Texans,' said Gene Wu, chair of the Texas House Democratic Caucus. 'We won't allow disaster relief to be held hostage for the sake of Trump's gerrymandering plan.' Wu added, 'We're not abandoning our duties—we're walking out on a rigged system that ignores the voices of those we represent. As far as we're concerned, this corrupt special session is now over.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The newly proposed map, unveiled last week by Texas Republicans, is designed to strengthen the GOP's grip in next year's midterm elections. It aims to carve out five additional Republican-leaning districts, particularly targeting Democratic strongholds in Austin, Dallas and Houston, as well as two closely contested districts in South Texas.

India, US may invest in Africa's critical minerals
India and the US have discussed proposals to jointly invest in critical minerals projects in Africa, according to persons aware of the matter. Both New Delhi and Washington have been keen to construct new critical minerals supply chains to reduce their dependence on China. India, US may invest in Africa's critical minerals According to an analysis by the International Energy Agency, China has a dominant 70% market share in the refining of over a dozen key critical minerals such as gallium, graphite, lithium and nickel. Critical minerals are used in the making of everything from solar panels and lithium ion batteries to medical imaging and wind turbines. America's Department of State and the Development Finance Cooperation initiated talks with key Indian companies and government ministries to consider interest in taking advantage of India's extant business networks in East Africa for critical minerals projects. The talks began during the tenure of the Biden Administration, and the emphasis continues . 'We are working closely with India to strengthen bilateral cooperation on critical minerals, an essential priority for both our countries' economic security. Through COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) and TRUST (Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology), we are working together to strengthen supply chains to ensure access to critical minerals and support industry innovation,' said a State Department spokesperson in response to a query from HT. 'At the recent Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the Quad partners also announced the launch of the Quad Critical Minerals Initiative, which will strengthen economic security and collective resilience in the face of economic coercion, price manipulation, and supply chain disruptions in this sector,' the spokesperson stated before adding that the State Department has no immediate information to share on joint US-India investments in Africa. In January 2025, India established the ₹16,300 crore National Critical Minerals Mission to boost domestic production of these minerals and reduce dependence on foreign imports. According to the ministry of heavy industries, the Geological Survey of India undertook 368 exploration projects focused on critical and strategic minerals in 2024-25. India has also sought international partners for the creation of new critical minerals supply chains. In 2023, India joined the Minerals Security Partnership , which is led by the United States and includes the European Union, Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom. 'MSP partner governments engage across a wide range of agencies and departments, including those responsible for foreign affairs, economy, energy, trade, mining, industry, development finance, and export finance. MSP partners established the Finance Network to bring together the development finance institutions (DFIs) and export credit agencies (ECAs) of the MSP partner governments to concretely focus on project finance,' according to the US State Department. Despite these efforts, the International Energy Agency estimates that efforts to diversify supply chains will make slow progress. For example, IEA predicts that critical minerals refining supply chains will only see marginal diversification by 2035 with China remaining the dominant player.

‘Some Americans to get dividend': Distribution of money from tariff revenue possible, says Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump has said that distribution of money received from the tariff revenue is possible and that some Americans could get some kind of dividend from the 'reciprocal tariff' being imposed on America's trading partners, Reuters reported. 'There could be a distribution or a dividend to the people of our country, I would say for people that would be middle income people and lower income people, we could do a dividend,' Trump said ahead of boarding his Air Force One after leaving his golf club in New Jersey. Trump has imposed tariffs on almost all its trading partners in order to balance their trade deficit with the US. The US president first announced the 'reciprocal tariffs' in April which led to a global financial crisis with stock markets plunging across the world market. Trump had then decided to put the tariffs in moratorium for 90 days and set a baseline 10% tariff for the countries, and made room to negotiate deals with the federal administration. The deadline which was supposed to end on July 9 was extended to August 1 and several countries were able to strike a deal with the US. However, a country like India, which isn't able to finalise a deal on time with the US administration has been imposed with a 25% tariff on all its products exported to the United States, while Trump has also threatened a penalty for purchasing Russian oil and arms. The United States was able to finalise a deal with the UK, European Union, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Pakistan among others. The Republican leader has argued that tariffs boost American manufacturing and protect jobs. However, Trump's volatile trade policy has thrown the world economy into crisis and sent jitters across all the stock exchanges. Several firms have also increased their prices for the US consumers as a result of Trump's tariff policy.
