Call for transparent probe into tragedy

Syafiqah who is also a Sabah youth activist called for the setting up of a special task force involving the police, Attorney General's Department, Ministry of Education and non-governmental organisations to conduct a transparent investigation without protection for any party involved. 'I express condolences to the family of Zara Qairina, a former SK Pantai Sipitang pupil,' she said in a statement. "This should never happen in any educational institution. "This is not an ordinary disciplinary issue. This is a crime and must be treated as such,' said Syafiqah who is also Sabah Imam Deputy Chairperson. She urged the Government to expedite the drafting of comprehensive anti-bullying legislation that would define bullying in all its forms namely physical, verbal, emotional, cyber and power-based while establishing progressive punishments ranging from counselling to imprisonment. She noted that currently, Malaysia lacks specific anti-bullying laws, with cases handled under various provisions including the Penal Code, Children Act 2001 and Education Act 1996. This legal gap, according to Syafiqah, causes many cases to not be taken seriously. She also called for stricter school and hostel safety protocols, regular independent audits, mandatory training for educators and staff and the deployment of psychologists in every district. "The time has come to stop the culture of silence and protecting perpetrators. "Our education system should educate, not oppress,' she said. The incident sparked various reactions and public concern, including allegations of bullying at the school with individuals sharing testimonies of parents whose children had previously attended the school. One netizen claimed some parents decided to transfer their children to other schools because of the bullying incidents. Among the disclosures was an allegation that the bullying incident was only discovered several months after it occurred and that the matter was reported to the school management. However, that it was not pursued due to the victim's inconsistent testimony caused by the trauma experienced. In another post, a mother claimed that her child cried and shared the experiences they had while staying in the dormitory. The allegations included being forced to sleep on the floor, receiving punishments, being ordered to wash senior students' dishes and fetching water from the ground floor of the building. The mother said her child was too scared to speak up to the wardens or their parents as they were worried about how the other students might react. She said her child became more withdrawn and lost their usual spark every time they had to go back. This worried the family so much that they decided it was best to transfer the child to another school. The abuse came to light after the victim's mother confronted her husband about his failure to provide financial support for the family, prompting her to leave the home with the victim's five younger siblings. It was then that the victim found the courage to reveal the secret she had kept for years. "When the mother asked the victim to stay with her father after the separation, the victim refused and broke down in tears, recounting how she had been subjected to her father's sexual abuse for a decade since she was eight years old," the source said. The victim disclosed that the most recent incident occurred around 9pm last week at their home, while her mother was packing to leave with her younger siblings. Following this revelation, the mother took all six of her children to Kuala Lumpur, where they temporarily stayed with relatives before lodging a police report on Sunday. The mother also alleged that her husband frequently beat the children, causing serious injuries, but she had not reported it earlier due to his threats. MELAKA: A brief commotion unfolded at the Melaka Court Complex in Ayer Keroh when a woman, believed to be a relative of an accused in an armed robbery case, attempted to block members of the media from carrying out their duties. The incident occurred yesterday near the police counter at the courthouse lobby, where two women followed the accused, Amirul Hamry Hambalyi Azahari, 27, as he was being escorted by policemen after he was charged in the Sessions Court. As two cameramen recorded the scene with court approval, one of the women, in her 20s, approached a senior television cameraman and placed her hand on his shoulder, requesting that he stop recording. Another journalist and a cameraman from the Chinese media were also reportedly obstructed and verbally abused. Earlier, the same woman was seen attempting to intercept policemen escorting the suspect, seemingly to prevent media personnel from recording footage. Eyewitnesses claimed both women tried to escalate the situation by stating that they held official positions. The confrontation, which lasted roughly two minutes, was quickly brought under control by cops. Amirul Hamry had earlier appeared before judge Haderiah Siri to face charges of robbery while armed with a meat-cutting knife. He is alleged to have taken RM202.80 in cash, three boxes of cigarettes and a barcode scanner from a convenience store in Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho 2 at 3am on July 29. If convicted, Amirul Hamry faces up to 20 years in prison and possible whipping under Section 392 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397. The accused, who was unrepresented, was granted bail of RM9,000 with additional conditions, including reporting to the police fortnightly and surrendering his passport. The court fixed Sept 9 as the next mention date.

Jail for fleeing police custody

Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old man was sentenced to nine months jail by the Magistrate's Court for escaping from lawful police custody while at the Penampang Health Clinic, two months ago. Mohd Asroy Adonara, a freelance air-condition technician, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to have deliberately fled from police custody while being lawfully detained at the Penampang Health Clinic, Penampang, on June 6 this year, at 10.30pm. Advertisement Asroy, whose case came up for mention on Tuesday, changed his plea to guilty to the charge under Section 224 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine, or both, on conviction. He had on July 3 claimed trial to the charge. The fact of the case presented by the prosecution stated that on the morning of June 6, at 10.25am, Asroy was escorted by police personnel to the Emergency and Treatment Room of the Penampang Health Clinic after he complained of chest pains. Following an examination by a doctor, Asroy was placed on bed rest. Advertisement While the complainant was consulting medical staff regarding further treatment, Asroy suddenly leapt off the bed, pushed open the nearby emergency door, and ran out of the clinic compound in an attempt to flee. Police immediately pursued the accused and successfully re-apprehended him outside the clinic. Asroy was brought back into the clinic for further medical attention and handcuffed before being taken back to the Penampang police station lock-up, where he was placed in a cell without further incident. He was ordered to serve the sentence from June 6. In another case, an unemployed man was jailed seven months for having a stolen welding machine. Md Shaurey Masdi pleaded guilty to having the stolen machine at 3.30pm, on June 17, by the roadside of Kg Rampayan, Manggatal. The charge, under Section 411 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, on conviction. The facts of the case, presented by the prosecution, stated that the item was stolen during a break-in at a premises in Manggatal.
