Lahad Datu Hospital donates stretcher bed to NGO
Published on: Tuesday, May 27, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 27, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Presentation of stretcher to Team Amal representatives. Kota Kinabalu: A non-governmental organisation (NGO) providing free ambulance services in Sabah received a timely boost after Lahad Datu Hospital donated a stretcher bed to support its daily operations. The contribution not only improves its emergency response efforts but also symbolises public healthcare support for community welfare initiatives by the NGO, known as Persatuan Amal dan Jariah Sabah, or Team Amal. Its founder, Masrul Guding, said the stretcher would allow their ambulance service to operate more effectively. 'This is a very meaningful gift to us, as previously our operations were limited due to a shortage of stretchers and difficulty in moving bedridden patients,' he said on Sunday. He said the donation also reflected the Health Ministry's backing of Team Amal's efforts in the State. 'Team Amal currently operates two ambulances – one each in Kota Kinabalu and Lahad Datu – and plans to expand to more districts in future,' he said. Advertisement Masrul also thanked the staff of Lahad Datu Hospital for their support and help in ensuring Team Amal's ambulance service runs smoothly. Team Amal also provides free hearse van services, with four vehicles currently operating state-wide. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Demolition of houses postponed till Sunday
Published on: Friday, May 23, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 23, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Residents being comforted after witnessing their homes being demolished under a court order in Kg Jimpangah, Beaufort. Kota Kinabalu: The demolition of houses in Kg Jimpangah, Beaufort, which began on Wednesday, has been postponed until Sunday after residents refused to vacate their houses. According to Sabah Consumer Front Association (CFOS) Sec-Gen Hashima Hasbullah, the demolition was halted after the landowner agreed to grant residents until May 25 to vacate. 'The demolition work began at 10am on Wednesday and four houses were partially demolished. Hashima said there was also a letter from the Lands and Surveys Department (JTU) addressed to the landowner requesting a postponement of the process. 'A letter from the JTU Director was issued to request a delay in the eviction, accompanied by a letter from the Chief Minister's Office. 'However, whether the eviction is postponed or cancelled is entirely at the discretion of the landowner, as this involves a court order,' she said. Advertisement It is understood that around 200 residents are facing eviction from land they have occupied for the past 80 years. A total of 53 houses are affected by the eviction order, involving approximately four hectares, following a court notice issued on May 7. Asked about the status of the land, Hashima clarified that it is classified as country lease (CL) land, which complicates the process. 'The land originally belonged to the British North Borneo Company since 1911 before it was transferred to a rubber company. The ancestors of the current residents worked and lived there. 'After independence, the residents were allowed to remain in the area. Eventually, they were supposed to apply for the land to be designated as a village settlement. 'Applications were submitted since 1991, but the residents in early 2024 were informed through court documents that the land now belongs to someone else,' she said. Beaufort Member of Parliament Datuk Siti Aminah Aching said she is working to arrange a meeting with the landowner. The former Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities said the meeting is part of her efforts to appeal to the landowner to extend the deadline for vacating the area. 'This issue deeply affects me as well because the residents involved are locals and voters in my constituency. 'I have tried from the beginning to engage with the relevant parties, but efforts have been unsuccessful until I received news that the residents would have to leave the land soon,' Siti Aminah said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 25 tonnes of flotsam can be removed now
Published on: Friday, May 09, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 09, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Sabin launching the skimmer boat off Pulau Gaya. Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) is now capable of collecting up to 25 tonnes of rubbish daily from waters around Kota Kinabalu through the use of a rubbish collection boat or 'skimmer boat', significantly improving the efficiency of marine cleaning operations. Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said the use of a skimmer boat had increased the amount of waste collected compared to previous manual methods, which relied only on a small boat and nets. 'With the use of a skimmer boat, DBKK can collect five tonnes of waste in a single trip. In a day, the boat can make five return trips, bringing the total collection to 25 tonnes per day. 'This certainly boosts our collection rate in the waters, as previously we relied solely on a small boat and nets, which were quite traditional,' he told reporters after launching the Mobula Skimmer Boat in the waters off Pulau Gaya on Wednesday. Dr Sabin emphasised the importance of collaboration with various parties in addressing marine pollution, as the Government cannot tackle the issue alone. 'If waste is not managed properly, tourists may stop coming. That's something we do not want to happen in Kota Kinabalu. 'As such, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between DBKK and the Marine Research Foundation (MRF) to introduce the use of a skimmer boat,' he added. Dr Sabin said with the addition of a new boat named Mobula, after the Mobula ray, he hopes to acquire two more skimmer boats before the end of the year. 'In addition to using these skimmer boats, DBKK has also launched a large-scale sea cleaning project this year. 'We now have one skimmer boat and we hope to obtain two more of the same type for that purpose,' he said. Meanwhile, MRF Founder and Executive Director Dr Nicolas J Pilcher said data collected from the skimmer boat's operations would be used to identify the types and volume of plastic waste floating in the sea. 'This data is crucial for designing more targeted intervention programmes. When we know the type and quantity of plastic, we can implement more effective policies or campaigns. 'We've already seen early success through initiatives to reduce plastic bag use around Kota Kinabalu, which have had a positive impact on reducing marine waste,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Most divorces due to liquor, money: Jheains
Published on: Tuesday, May 06, 2025 Published on: Tue, May 06, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Jumain said in some cases couples are already seeking divorce in the Native Court before their marriage had reached a year. Kota Kinabalu: Alcohol abuse and financial instability are among the main causes of divorce among young couples in Sabah. State Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) Director Datuk Jumain Abdul Ghani said these two factors not only place pressure on the institution of marriage, but can also trigger conflicts that end in divorce, including among non-Muslim couples. According to him, there are 17 causes for divorce and both these factors ranks high on the list. Jumain said this based on his experience handling divorce cases among young couples. 'This is because it can lead to addiction, personality changes, job loss, financial problems and domestic violence,' he said after the Mental, Physical and Spiritual Youth Wellness Seminar and the Premier Islamic Pre-Marriage Course at Wisma Muis recently. The seminar was officiated by State Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation who is also the Islamic Religious Affairs Exco of Sabah, Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif. 'We also have a lot of experience dealing with youth divorce caused by drunkenness. 'They don't come home for days, and when searched are found in a neighbour's house. This often happens during major festive celebrations,' he said. 'As for financial problems, he said lack of knowledge, preparation and mutual understanding between couples all stem from financial pressure that is not properly addressed,' he said. He said in some cases couples are already seeking divorce in the Native Court before their marriage had reached a year. 'These people are still young, around 25 to 40. Some have been married for only six months and when problems arise, they immediately want divorce,' he said. He advised young couples to prepare themselves with knowledge about marriage before tying the knot, including attending pre-marriage courses. 'Even if their finances aren't strong, they can try to make ends meet, if they are hardworking, not lazy and so on,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
