SE urges SOGT maintenance postponement to avoid major power cuts

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity (SE) has requested Petronas to postpone scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) to avoid large-scale electricity rationing affecting around 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan. SE Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the planned rotation-based rationing is expected to run from this Friday until 7 August across the state and Labuan. He explained that initial arrangements had anticipated no supply disruption, following earlier discussions with Petronas and the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos). However, he said new information received on Tuesday revealed that the system could not operate on alternative fuel as expected, potentially reducing grid capacity by 195 Megawatts for seven days. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mohd Yaakob said further talks with Petronas would be held later in the day to explore the possibility of delaying the maintenance until capacity stabilises. He added that postponing the works would help ease the situation, as scheduled outages would otherwise affect users during peak hours from 10am to 10pm, lasting one to two hours each time. ‘I don't smoke', says Anwar, backing push to raise tobacco tax

He was responding to calls for the government to review tobacco duties. Advertisement 'I agree with the spirit of that proposal. I myself not only do not smoke, but also fully support anti-smoking campaigns,' he told reporters when asked about the matter. In 2015, Malaysia raised the excise duty on tobacco by 42.8 per cent. Together with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the overall tax on cigarettes increased from 28 sen per stick in 2014 to 40 sen in 2015. Since then, tobacco taxes have not been revised. Advertisement In Budget 2024, Anwar's administration introduced a 5 per cent excise duty on chewing tobacco, but left cigarette taxes unchanged. In May, a Merdeka Center survey found that two-thirds of Malaysians support higher cigarette taxes, provided they are implemented moderately and predictably. The survey revealed that 66 per cent backed a tax hike, 25 per cent opposed it, and nine per cent were unsure. WhatsApp takes down 6.8 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers, Meta says

The account deletions, which Meta said took place over the first six months of the year, arrive as part of wider company efforts to crack down on scams. In a Tuesday (Aug 5) announcement, Meta said it was also rolling new tools on WhatsApp to help people spot scams – including a new safety overview that the platform will show when someone who is not in a user's contacts adds them to a group, as well as ongoing test alerts to pause before responding. Scams are becoming all too common and increasingly sophisticated in today's digital world – with too-good-to-be-true offers and unsolicited messages attempting to steal consumers' information or money filling our phones, social media and other corners of the internet each day. Meta noted that "some of the most prolific' sources of scams are criminal scam centres, which often span from forced labour operated by organised crime – and warned that such efforts often target people on many platforms at once, in attempts to evade detection. That means that a scam campaign may start with messages over text or a dating app, for example, and then move to social media and payment platforms, the California-based company said. Meta, which also owns Facebook and Instagram, pointed to recent scam efforts that it said attempted to use its own apps – as well as TikTok, Telegram and AI-generated messages made using ChatGPT – to offer payments for fake likes, enlist people into a pyramid scheme and/or lure others into cryptocurrency investments. Meta linked these scams to a criminal scam centre in Cambodia – and said it disrupted the campaign in partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI. – AP .
