SOGT maintenance rescheduled to Aug 5–11 to support power grid stability

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The integrated maintenance work at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) in Kimanis has been rescheduled to Aug 5–11, from the earlier Aug 1–7 timeline. The decision was reached during a joint meeting between the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos), Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, and the Grid System Operator on July 30. Ecos CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the new dates allow for key repair and testing work, including diesel-based reliability tests and completion of a 40MW battery storage expansion. The rescheduling aims to minimise the need for power rationing during the maintenance period, helping maintain grid stability in Sabah. Gas supply to Kimanis Power Plant and SPR Energy will be shut off during the works, with both plants temporarily switching to diesel. A new 100MW generation project by Sabah Electricity in Kimanis will also undergo pipeline connection work during this shutdown. Once completed in Q3 2025, this and other initiatives are expected to raise Sabah's generation reserve margin to 30 per cent, up from less than 10 per cent in 2023. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? SE urges SOGT maintenance postponement to avoid major power cuts

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: Nora Ahmad Text Size: Mohd Yaakob and others at the press conference. KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity (SE) has requested Petronas to postpone scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) to avoid large-scale electricity rationing affecting around 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan. SE Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the planned rotation-based rationing is expected to run from this Friday until 7 August across the state and Labuan. He explained that initial arrangements had anticipated no supply disruption, following earlier discussions with Petronas and the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos). However, he said new information received on Tuesday revealed that the system could not operate on alternative fuel as expected, potentially reducing grid capacity by 195 Megawatts for seven days. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mohd Yaakob said further talks with Petronas would be held later in the day to explore the possibility of delaying the maintenance until capacity stabilises. He added that postponing the works would help ease the situation, as scheduled outages would otherwise affect users during peak hours from 10am to 10pm, lasting one to two hours each time. SE will continue working closely with IPPs, Ecos and other stakeholders to monitor the situation and reduce any inconvenience to consumers, with updates available on SE's Facebook page and app. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Reduced inspection frequency for low-voltage standby gensets in Sabah

Published on: Thursday, July 03, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 03, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) has clarified that not all registered standby generator installations in residential premises require periodic checks by Competent Persons under the new Electricity Supply Enactment 2024. Ecos CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser bin Abdul Wahid ( pic ) said installations operating at low voltage and connected via switchgear rated below 100 amperes are exempt from such visits, whether in homes, commercial, or industrial premises. He added that low-voltage setups using switchgear rated between 100 and 300 amperes in residential and commercial premises will also not require mandatory visits. For industrial sites, including petrol stations, the required visits may be reduced from monthly to once every three months, while premises supplied at 11,000 volts may now only require monthly instead of fortnightly visits. However, high-voltage sites receiving supply up to 132,000 volts remain subject to stricter oversight, with any request for reduced visits subject to Ecos' safety checks and formal approval. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah charts green energy path at Energy Asia 2025

Published on: Monday, June 23, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 Text Size: Abdul Nasser speaks at the event. KUALA LUMPUR: The Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) presented the state's energy transition roadmap at the recent Energy Asia 2025 conference, outlining key goals under the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040). Ecos CEO Datuk Abdul Nasser bin Abdul Wahid joined national energy leaders on a panel discussing Malaysia's sustainable growth and detailed Sabah's target of achieving 80 per cent renewable energy by 2050, up from its current 80 per cent gas dependence. Sabah's plans include Southeast Asia's largest Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) in Lahad Datu, operational by July 2025, alongside other projects to ensure a 25 per cent reserve margin by Q3 2025. Ecos, empowered by recent State energy laws, is also pushing for universal rural electrification, carbon neutrality by 2050, and improved reliability through strategic power plant development and interconnection with Sarawak. Despite tariff pressures and subsidy burdens, Nasser said Sabah remains committed to a just and inclusive energy transition, supported by investor-friendly policies and accelerating rural electrification efforts. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya (centre) and ECoS CEO Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid (third from right) at the MoU exchange ceremony in Kota Kinabalu. KOTA KINABALU: A total of 15 training institutions across Sabah have been accredited by the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos) to run Electrical Competency Programmes across various categories. The certification was handed over on May 19 during the launch of the Sabah TVET Council, witnessed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya who represented the Chief Minister. Ecos chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the move demonstrated their commitment to support the state government's efforts to promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a preferred path for local youths. 'This accreditation is expected to boost industry confidence in the quality of TVET graduates from Sabah, thereby improving their employability and contributing to the state's economic development,' he said. Ecos also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the state-run Technical and Commercial Training Institute (ILTP) under the TVET Institution Adoption Programme, which will focus on competency development in energy-related sectors such as electricity, gas and renewable energy. One of the key collaborations under the MOU is the development of a Gas Installer Competency Programme at ILTP aimed at increasing the number of certified gas personnel in Sabah. ECoS will provide technical expertise and advisory support in curriculum development, training modules and facility requirements. The ILTP will also be gradually upgraded to run Electrical Competency Programmes in the Electrical Machine Supervisor (up to B4 level) and Electrical Wiring (up to PW4 level) categories, under Ecos technical guidance. Nasser said both parties would work closely to enhance the employability of ILTP graduates and Ecos would serve as the main reference body to ensure ongoing compliance and accreditation. The 16 accredited institutions include UMS Investment Holdings, UTM-MPRC Institute for Oil and Gas, Institut Kemahiran Mara Kota Kinabalu, ILP Kota Kinabalu, IKBN Kinarut, GiatMara centres in Semporna, Kota Belud, Sandakan, Tawau, Kinabatangan, Keningau, Gaya and Limbawang, Akademi Binaan Malaysia Sandakan, Institut Latihan Teknik & Perdagangan, ILP Sandakan, and IEM Training Academy Sdn Bhd.
