New policy to make Delhi a film shooting hub

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday announced that a new film policy is being framed to position the capital as an international shooting destination. The policy will include a single-window clearance system for approving film and other shoot applications, along with comprehensive plans to develop the necessary infrastructure to transform Delhi into a global film hub. Gupta also announced that an international film festival will be organised in the city and a budget of Rs 30 crore has been earmarked for it. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Celebrating India Film Festival (CIFF) at Siri Fort Auditorium, Gupta said the govt is committed to turning Delhi into a cultural and cinematic centre. "A film policy is being shaped to establish Delhi as an international shooting destination. Applications for film and other shoots will be approved through a single-window system," she said, adding, the govt is planning to develop the film industry in the capital and provide related facilities. The event was attended by several political dignitaries and many eminent figures from the film industry. The govt expects a surge in film shoot applications and plans to fast-track approvals to encourage filmmakers to explore Delhi's locations and stories. She said that this festival has sent out a message that Delhi is now becoming a new centre for film production and cultural expression. "With this new film policy, Delhi will no longer be known just for politics or history, but also for its culture, creativity, and cinematic appeal," she said. Gupta highlighted the irony that while Delhi is home to prestigious institutions like the National School of Drama (NSD), talent still migrates to Mumbai for opportunities. "Why should people learn acting in Delhi only to be forced to seek work in Mumbai?" she asked. The CM said the govt now aims to provide complete support for the film and television ecosystem—from shooting to post-production—within the capital. "Local artistes should not have to leave Delhi. Today's event marks a milestone in that direction," she said. Gupta added that the upcoming film festival will not only showcase films and documentaries from India and abroad but also highlight Delhi's rich cultural diversity. Hosting an international film festival in Delhi will also boost tourism, for which preparations are already underway, she said.
