Over 3,000 OSH practitioners expected at Asean Safety and Health Workers Summit 2025
KUCHING (July 29): Over 3,000 occupational safety and health (OSH) practitioners are expected at the Asean Safety and Health Workers Summit 2025 in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 4-5.
The summit, organised by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh), is themed 'Empowering Inclusivity and Sustainability for a Resilient Workforce' and will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
More than 70 experts from Asean countries and international speakers from Denmark, the United States, the United Kingdom and Turkey are expected at the event.
According to Niosh chairman Chong Chieng Jen, OSH practitioners across the nation should participate in the summit's programmes, including the Conference and Exhibition on Occupational Safety and Health (COSH 2025) and the Niosh International Standards Seminar (NISS 2025).
He said COSH 2025, previously a national programme, has now been upgraded to an international Asean platform.
'It is not just a conference but now the largest OSH gathering in Malaysia with the certificate of participation this time also displaying the Asean logo,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Chong said the summit, organised in conjunction with the Asean-Malaysia Chairmanship 2025, also opens a new chapter in regional cooperation, innovation and policy formation centred on workers' well-being.
He said the Asian Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute Executive Meeting, which brings together OSH research institutions from 14 Asian countries, will also be organised in conjunction with the summit.
He added that the 'ASEAN++ Workshop and Technical Visit' involving participants from Asean OSH agencies will also be held, as well as the Malaysian Research Initiative for National Agenda (MaRINA 3.0) workshop to set the country's OSH research priorities for 2026-2030; the world record OSH Integrity Pledge initiative; and an exhibition involving more than 60 OSH-related companies.
Chong pointed out that among the topics presented throughout the programme include psychosocial risk management, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, ESG (environmental, social and governance) strategies in the work environment and a more inclusive and healthy future of work.
He said COSH 2025 and NISS 2025 offer comprehensive professional learning opportunities with recognition from various professional bodies and regulators.
'Participants of COSH 2025 will receive 15 continuing education programme (CEP) points from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH); 16 continuing professional development (CPD) points from the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA); 15 myCPD points from the Ministry of Health (MoH); and 16 CPD points from the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM),' he said.
The cost of programme participation can be claimed under the HRD Corp grant for eligible employers.
'Niosh also accepts payment through GL, LOU and Local Orders (LO) from government agencies,' added Chong.

Mukah records Malaysia's only unhealthy API reading of 107 as of 6pm
Haze situation in Mukah in the afternoon of July 30, 2025 – The Borneo Post photo KUCHING (June 30): Mukah is currently the only district in Malaysia recording an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API), with a reading of 107 as of 6pm today, according to the Department of Environment's Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS). An API reading between 101 and 200 is categorised as unhealthy and may pose health risks to sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Other monitoring stations across Sarawak reported moderate air quality (API 51–100). Sibu recorded the second highest API at 90, followed by Miri and Kapit at 73, and Kuching at 71. Other stations in the state reported readings ranging from 58 to 69. Meanwhile, the Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) in a 5.22pm update reported scattered clusters of hotspots in western Kalimantan, along with few to isolated hotspots in Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra. 'Slight to moderate localised smoke plumes were observed emanating from hotspots detected in the parts of Kalimantan, as well as the northern and central parts of Sumatra. 'The full extent of the hotspot and smoke haze situation over the southern Asean region could not be determined due to cloud cover,' it said.

49 Penampang students to receive prescription glasses
Rotarians, teachers and students of SMK Tansau. KOTA KINABALU (July 30): The Rotary Club of Kinabalu Sutera (RCKS) continues its commitment to community health in the new Rotary term with the Vision Care project, this time benefiting students of SMK Tansau in Penampang. Led by President Ken Chong, a team of eight Rotarians and four friends of Rotary visited the school to conduct eye screenings aimed at identifying students in need of corrective eyewear. Owing to time limitations, the team was unable to screen all 2,000 students at the school. Instead, they focused on 126 students from the B40 (low-income) group. Of these, 49 students were found to require spectacles. These students will be provided with prescription glasses free of charge as part of the club's outreach initiative. The screening activity received strong support from SMK Tansau's teachers and students, who assisted in facilitating the process. At the closing of the event, Chong expressed gratitude to the school for the opportunity to serve, noting the significant impact of free vision care on the students' well-being and academic performance. In response, school principal Dr Miller Yong thanked the club for selecting SMK Tansau as a beneficiary, and urged the students to make the most out of the free glasses. It was a meaningful and productive day for all involved. Participating Rotarians, besides the President, included Immediate Past President Dr Richard Gontusan, Assistant Governor and Past President Francis Ng, Past Presidents Abu Bakar Sheriff, Alice Kunjan and Christina Aluda, Rotarian Datin Yatie Agusyani and Rotarian Ivy Yew. The friends of Rotary who joined the effort were Kenny Tong, Dr Brinda Muthusamy and her son Vikram and daughter Sonya.
