The Maharashtra government has stayed its order making Hindi a mandatory third language for students of Classes 1 to 5 , following strong opposition from the state's Language Consultation Committee , reported PTI, citing the State's School Education Minister. The move came after the committee's chairperson, Laxmikant Deshmukh , publicly objected to the decision.Earlier, on Sunday, the Language Advisory Committee had written to the Chief Minister, urging a rollback of the April 16 directive. The letter argued that the decision was not academically justified and was 'not in tune with students' psychology.'The directive was part of the state's implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP), which includes a provision to introduce Hindi as a third language from Class 1. However, the decision sparked sharp criticism on social media, led by opposition parties Maharashtra now becomes the second major state, after Tamil Nadu, to face pushback over introducing a compulsory third language at the primary level. The original proposal had stemmed from recommendations made by a committee headed by a state minister.

Jaipur: In a major initiative, Rajasthan is preparing to introduce Sanskrit as a subject in pre-primary classes across state govt schools. This is being spearheaded by both the Sanskrit and the education departments and aims to teach children aged 3 to 5 the ancient language, said to be the first such programme in the country. These are designed to be used in both Sanskrit and Hindi/English medium govt schools, highlighting the inclusive approach of the initiative. Currently, the state boasts of 2,369 Sanskrit schools, comprising 1,867 govt-run institutions and 502 private ones. The educational material includes illustrations depicting food items, numbers, animals, birds and modes of transport, each accompanied by their corresponding Sanskrit words. To enhance the learning experience, the teaching material features interactive activities that encourage children to match words with pictures, fostering better recollection of the vocabulary. Aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP), each book concludes with a comprehensive list of all the words taught, presented in Sanskrit, Hindi and English, along with a column for children to write down the equivalent word in their mother tongue. Priyanka Jodhawat, commissioner of Sanskrit education, emphasised the importance of this initiative, "Simple Sanskrit words have been provided in the books so that children can use them in conversation and familiarise themselves with the language from a young age." The books also introduce concepts such as numbers through colorful balls, along with lessons on the days of the week, body parts and moral stories, all illustrated for better engagement. YS Ramesh, director of Central Sanskrit University, Jaipur, and head of the curriculum development committee for these books, said, "Rajasthan is the first state to implement the pattern of the NEP in Sanskrit education by preparing books in Sanskrit for pre-primary classes. " As the state prepares to implement the new language policy, many are hopeful that it will not only promote Sanskrit learning but will also instill a sense of cultural heritage among younger generations.

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin on Sunday slammed governor RN Ravi for indulging in 'cheap politics' worse than the opposition as accused him of spreading 'rumours' about the DMK-led state government. Stalin also accused the governor of spreading rumours about his government, 'He sits in the Raj Bhavan to spread rumours about the DMK government. He will not give approval for state schemes, he will agree to print non-existent (wrong) 'Thirukural' (couplets written by Tamil saint Thiruvalluvar), he disrespects our 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu' (Tamil anthem), he gives false information about Tamil Nadu's education, health, women's safety and law and order and stirs panic,' the CM said. Stalin's attack comes amid a heightened standoff between the governor and the Tamil Nadu government. It also comes days after Ravi, in his speech on the eve of Independence Day, expressed concerns over challenges faced by the state. Ravi had said Tamil Nadu was facing four major challenges: Educational and social discrimination of the poor and marginalised; alarming rise in suicides; fast spreading drug abuse among youth; and steep rise in rape and other sexual offences against women and girls. The DMK reacted sharply, accusing the Governor of making false allegations to malign the state government. 'Tamil Nadu is the forerunner in India. It's not just our claim, even the BJP-led Union government has released data that shows that our state is doing way better than BJP ruled states. Unable to accept this fact, he is angry and irritated, so the governor is whining against us in public events,' Stalin said. 'Tamil Nadu is the number 2 state in the school education system in India. Only because our state is peaceful, we have been able to sign ₹10-crore worth of investments in the last four years. As regards women's safety, citing National Crime Records Bureau statistics of 2022, he claimed BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh tops in crimes against women. Therefore, the governor should target BJP-ruled states, Stalin said. Stalin said Ravi should continue in Tamil Nadu 'as it is good for us'. 'He is effectively ensuring that our fire for the language, race and ideology burns bright. Let him talk, I am not bothered. I am only bothered about you, want to be truthful to you who have voted for us,' he said. During the event, the CM launched a Cooperative department initiative to provide interest-free crop loans to farmers applying online. An official release said the government had earlier announced that the pilot scheme will be launched in Dharmapuri before expanding it across the state. The effort involves disbursing the loan the same day it is applied online. The Stalin-led party and its allies had also boycotted the Governor's 'At Home' reception hosted on Independence Day. Poll panel needs to undergo radical changes: Akhilesh
Lucknow: The Election Commission of India must inevitably undergo radical changes as improvements alone will not suffice for an institution which has a historical liability to save democracy, said Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday. The SP chief's statement came on a day when the ECI held a press conference in New Delhi over Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's allegations of manipulations in at least one Lok Sabha constituency of Karnataka during the 2024 general election. Akhilesh's comments also coincided with Rahul Gandhi along with INDIA bloc partners – Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Yadav and his son Tejashwi Yadav – launching Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar earlier in the day. "The ECI has blamed the political parties for anomalies in voters list and spared the EROs and BLOs. The BLOs add and subtract names in the voter list under pressure from the political party in government. The opposition parties, because of time constraints and limited means, are unable to pinpoint these anomalies and on several occasions, no action is taken when complaints are filed," said senior party functionary Sudhir Panwar, adding: "Samajwadi Party had given proof of manipulation but no action was initiated. " Panwar said proofreaders of lists also cannot be held responsible for such anomalies particularly in a scenario when corrections are not made despite being pointed out.
