Boston University takes home 32nd Beanpot title with 4-1 win over Boston College

CBS News11-02-2025
BOSTON -- The Boston University Terriers are Beanpot champs for the 32nd time in school history after beating rival Boston College, 4-1, in the title bout at TD Garden on Monday night.
The Terriers erased a 1-0 deficit in the second period with a pair of goals from freshmen Brandon Svoboda and Cole Hutson just 1:10 apart, while freshman goaltender Mikhail Yegorov was a star in net with 43 saves on the night.
Boston College's Gabe Perreault was the only Eagle to beat Yegorov on Monday night. The sophomore forward put one by Yegorov just over six minutes into the contest to give top-ranked Boston College an early lead. The Eagles dominated the first 20 minutes on Monday, but only had a 1-0 edge to show for it.
Yegorov buckled down in net the rest of the way and Boston University took control early in the second period. Svoboda and Hutson scored just over a minute apart in the second frame, and the Terriers never relinquished that lead.
Freshman Cole Eiserman tacked on some insurance with 6:08 to to play in the third period, as BU got tallies from three freshmen. Sophomore Gavin McCarthy put an exclamation point on the win with a 185-foot empty-net goal to seal the victory for the Terries.
It was the first Beanpot title for Boston University since 2022. After going without a trophy at any stage last season, Terriers head coach Jay Pandolfo hopes this Beanpot title will propel his team to even greater things the rest of the way.
"I hope this gives us confidence as a team," said Pandolfo, whose Terriers are now 16-10-1 on the season. "With our guys, we're still trying to get the message across to understand that if we play a certain way, we're going to have success."
Cole Hutson named Beanpot MVP
Hutson, 18, was named Beanpot MVP after he finished the tournament with three goals and a pair of assists for five points. He said winning a Beanpot with his brother, junior forward Quinn Hutson, along with having family in the TD Garden stands made Monday's win all the more special.
"It's going to be something I remember forever," he told WBZ-TV's Dan Roche on the ice after Monday's win. "Especially to win it with my older brother and to have my family in the stands."
Bringing home a Beanpot title will give the Terriers some serious bragging rights for the rest of the season, but Hutson isn't expecting any rock-star treatment on campus.
"Hopefully not too much different. We try to stay a little humble and get back to class," he said.
Mikhail Yegorov a star in net for Terriers
In his just fifth start for Boston University, the 18-year-old Yegorov stopped 43 of the 44 shots that Boston College sent his way. Overall in Beanpot action, Yegorov turned away 69 of the 71 shots he saw for a .972 save percentage -- the third-highest in Beanpot history.
That earned Yegorov the Eberly Award in his first-ever Beanpot, given to the goaltender with the highest save percentage across the tournament.
"It's amazing. It's a dream to play in an NHL rink for everyone in the hockey world," Yegorov told Roche on the ice after the win. "Being able to step on the ice and in this rivalry, in front of 17,000 people -- the atmosphere was so much fun."

Former Alabama quarterback to reportedly start for ACC program

Sources: Boston College is naming redshirt sophomore Dylan Lonergan as the starting quarterback, and he'll debut for BC as the starter in the opener against Fordham. Lonergan is an Alabama transfer who came to BC this winter. He was ESPN's No. 36 overall recruit in the Class of… According to a report from ESPN's Pete Thamel, a former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback is set to start for an ACC program this upcoming season. That quarterback is Dylan Lonergan, an offseason transfer from the Crimson Tide, who, according to Thamel, has won the starting job entering this season at Boston College. The Eagles are currently coached by former Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien. A former four-star recruit, per 247Sports, in Alabama's 2023 recruiting class, Lonergan was a backup across each of the past two seasons in Tuscaloosa where he saw limited action. With the Crimson Tide, Lonergan completed 7-of-8 passes for 35 yards, while also rushing for 21 yards on two attempts. Lonergan was one-of-two players to transfer this past offseason from Alabama to Boston College, joined by tight end Ty Lockwood. Michelle Pasiechnyk Makes Her Return To Hockey

Following a year in which she stepped away from the game, Michelle Pasiechnyk has returned to the sport after joining Boston University for the upcoming season, the team announced Monday. The Ottawa, Ontario native will look to pick up where she left off following four strong seasons with the Clarkson University Golden Knights. During that time, Pasiechnyk would amass a 74-28-5 record, along with 21 shutouts, a 1.58 goals against average and a .935 save percentage, while making 2449 total saves. She was also named NCAA Goaltender of the Year in 2024 after going 25-5-1 with eight shutouts, beating out Raygan Kirk of Ohio State, and Gwyneth Philips of Northeastern, who was the reigning award winner. What makes Michelle Pasiechnyk such a strong goaltender, and one to watch as she rejoins the college ranks, is that she's positionally sound and calm in goal. Pasiechnyk is also aggressive, comfortable coming out to challenge the shooters, and is never out of a play, using her edges to move laterally with ease. Heading into the 2026 PWHL Draft, Michelle Pasiechnyk has undoubtedly become the top goalie on the board, and if her performances at every level of her career are any indication, GMs will be lining up to have the opportunity to call her name.

Spartans target, 3-star QB Cooper Newman to reportedly visit MSU next month

Michigan State football to reportedly host a three-star quarterback prospect in the 2027 class for a visit next month. Cooper Newman of Sevierville, Tenn. will reportedly visit Michigan State for their home game against Boston College on September 6. Ryan O'Bleness of Spartans Illustrated reported the notable visit for Newman. Newman is a three-star prospect with recruiting rating of 82.33 in Rivals' Industry Ranking system. He ranks as the No. 48 quarterback and No. 563 overall prospect in the class. Michigan State is one of more than 10 schools to extend an offer to Newman, according to On3. Other schools to offer Newman were Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Northwestern, Maryland, Appalachian State, Marshall, Toledo, Gardner-Webb and Bowling Green. Newman is one of many big-name visitors coming to Michigan State for a game this fall, with the Boston College matchup in week two being a massive recruiting weekend for the Spartans. Adding Newman to that list is promising and makes this weekend even bigger for the Spartans' recruitment in the 2027 class.
