Engineering Giant Siemens Propels Simulation Frontier with Altair Deal

Siemens has completed its acquisition of Altair Engineering in a £8.3 billion all-cash transaction, signalling a significant evolution in its industrial software strategy. The integration of Altair's high-performance computing, data analytics and simulation portfolio into the Siemens Xcelerator platform represents a major leap in the company's ambition to lead in AI-powered engineering.
At the heart of this consolidation lie clear financial and strategic benefits. The deal, offering Altair shareholders US $113 per share, reflected a near 19 percent premium on its pre-announcement price. Siemens anticipates that digital revenues will rise by about €600 million in its 2023 financial results, with annual revenue gains projected at US $500 million in the medium term and potentially more than US $1 billion over the long term.
Siemens president and CEO Roland Busch underlined the move as essential to cementing Siemens' industrial software position. He described Altair as a 'diamond, a unique opportunity' with complementary strengths across regions—Altair strong in the US, Siemens dominant in Europe and Asia. Managing board member Cedrik Neike noted Siemens' capacity to continue making strategic acquisitions, heralding a new phase of expansion in the software arena.

Altair, founded in 1985 and headquartered in Troy, Michigan, specialises in computer‑aided engineering software such as HyperWorks, as well as in cloud‑based simulation, IoT, AI and HPC services. Its client base spans industries from automotive and aerospace to consumer electronics, underscoring its global relevance. The company has been delivering an average revenue growth of roughly 12 percent per year—a pace Siemens is keen to elevate.
By integrating Altair's capabilities into the Xcelerator platform, Siemens intends to offer an end-to-end, AI-driven portfolio that unifies simulation, data analysis, and HPC tools. The synergy is expected to extend Siemens' leadership in virtual product development, enabling engineers to create digital twins, test design iterations virtually and optimise product performance before physical prototyping.
The acquisition deepens Siemens' exploration into AI-enhanced design. With manufacturing industries under pressure to produce sustainable, efficient and safe products, the ability to simulate and analyse complex systems virtually becomes increasingly critical. Combining embedded hardware and software from Siemens with Altair's software tools could significantly reduce time‑to‑market and R&D costs.
Integration planning is underway. Altair's CTO, Sam Mahalingam, and Siemens executive Jean‑Claude Ercolanelli are spearheading the combined simulation and test‑solutions portfolio, which will roll under Siemens Digital Industries Software. Users at Siemens' Realize Live Americas 2025 conference have been briefed on the roadmap for merging software suites, enabling interoperability and expanding cloud‑native simulation options.
Market reaction to the announcement has been largely favourable. Analysts point out that this represents Siemens' third‑largest acquisition, second only to its Varian Medical Systems deal, and the biggest yet in its software division. Investors are eyeing enhanced earnings per share within two years post‑closing—a benchmark similar to the Varian acquisition.
Competition in the simulation software space remains intense, with rival consolidations such as Synopsys' US $35 billion takeover of Ansys earlier this year. Siemens' strategic bet on Altair appears timely, as industrial users increasingly demand seamless digital‑real world integration and advanced simulation capabilities, underpinned by AI and HPC.
Altair's established presence in North America, combined with Siemens' engineering and manufacturing legacy worldwide, paves the way for extensive cross‑selling opportunities. High‑impact use‑cases in electric vehicle development, aerospace, and electrification of train systems could showcase the full power of the unified platform.
The scale of the transaction means full technical, organisational and cultural integration may unfold gradually. However, Siemens has signalled its commitment by placing Altair's CTO within its senior digital industries hierarchy to ensure sustained innovation and continuity.
With simulation, AI and digital twins becoming indispensable in modern engineering, Siemens' completion of the Altair acquisition marks a strategic inflection point. The expanded toolkit will serve as a catalyst for manufacturers aiming to embrace advanced engineering methodologies, reflecting Siemens' broader vision of becoming the leading 'One Tech Company' in the digital age.

Apple's best revenue growth in three years failed to impress, with shares down about 1% in volatile trading on Friday, as investors questioned whether a tariff-driven surge in iPhone sales would last. A rush to buy iPhones ahead of potential U.S. tariff-driven price increases, along with China subsidies and upbeat demand for the budget 16e model launched in February, fueled a 13.5% jump in the quarterly sales of the device, crushing expectations. That pushed up total revenue by a better-than-expected 10% in the April-June period, and Apple issued an above-estimate sales forecast for the current quarter ending in September. The results came at a precarious time for the company long seen as Big Tech's safest bet. Beyond the tariff threats facing its manufacturing hubs China and India, Apple has been slow to move on artificial intelligence technology that its software and devices rivals have embraced as their next big growth driver. Analysts said the sales rebound in China, where local rivals have moved faster than Apple on AI features, was a positive. The company benefited in the world's largest smartphone market from a state subsidy program meant to prop up device sales. But they also warned the "pull-in" boost was expected to be temporary, raising doubts about demand for the rest of the year. "Pull-forward, remember, is not a U.S. issue. It's also a China issue. There, Apple's Pro model iPhones were too expensive to qualify for Chinese government subsidies that were being offered … so they cut prices to qualify, leaning into the volume opportunity. It worked," MoffettNathanson analysts said. "But as with the U.S., what does that mean for the rest of the year?" So far this year, Apple stock has underperformed all its "Magnificent Seven" peers barring Tesla, with a decline of more than 17%. The S&P has risen 7.8% in the period. Many of Apple's products are currently exempt from tariffs, and the company has also been rebalancing its supply chain to shield itself from the duties, sourcing iPhones from India and other products such as Macs and Apple Watches from Vietnam. The U.S. is currently negotiating trade deals with both China and India, with U.S. President Donald Trump saying India could face 25% tariffs as early as Friday. Apple said tariffs would raise costs by $1.1 billion in the current quarter after the company said it took an $800 million hit from tariffs in the third quarter. Its AI strategy also remains a concern after Apple delayed the release of an AI-enhanced version of Siri virtual assistant and was slow to launch Apple Intelligence. CEO Tim Cook said on Thursday the company was making good progress on Siri and that Apple is "significantly growing" its investments in AI. "Brand loyalty gives Apple time to get the AI transition right, but it needs to start delivering," said Matt Britzman, senior equity analyst, Hargreaves Lansdown.

Dubai Duty Free July 2025 sales surpass Dhs638 million

Dubai Duty Free (DDF) delivered a standout performance for the month of July, posting sales of Dhs638.8 million (US$175 million) for the month and year-to-date sales of Dhs4.734 billion (US$1.30 billion), which is 5.86 percent up on the same period last year. This monthly milestone surpasses the previous July record of Dhs602.8 million (US$165 million) set in 2023 and is 9.7 per cent higher or Dhs56.5 million (US$15.48 million) more than sales of Dhs582.26 (US$159.52 million) for July 2024. This places July 2025 in 9th place amongst the Top 10 months in Dubai Duty Free's history with the operator recording sales records in five months out of seven so far this year. The year-to-date growth of 5.86 per cent is particularly notable given that passenger growth for the same period is expected to be less than 3 per cent (DXB announced 2.3 per cent passenger growth from January – June). Ramesh Cidambi, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, said, 'We are delighted to report another strong sales month in what is already proving to be an exceptional year. This outstanding performance reflects the resilience of our retail operation and the continued demand for world-class shopping experiences. Achieving nearly 10 percent sales growth in a month when we estimate passenger traffic remained relatively flat is a testament to our team's dedication and product offering." The top five product categories in July were Perfumes, Liquor, Gold, Tobacco and Confectionery. Perfume sales rose by 10.3 per cent over the same month last year, Liquor sales rose by 1.7 percent, while Tobacco saw a 2.2 per cent increase. Gold sales rose by 15.5 per cent and Confectionery saw an incredible 57 per cent increase from July last year. Other notable performers were Watches with sales increase of 18.4 percent and Precious Jewellery with an increase of 16.8 percent. July's sales surge was fuelled in part by a growing appetite for iconic luxury brands. Dubai Duty Free's CA and CB Fashion Boutiques, home to some of the world's most sought-after luxury labels, delivered exceptional results in July, with growth of 11.36 per cent over the same period last year. Flagship brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Cartier were standout performers, reflecting sustained demand for high-end fashion and accessories at DXB. 'Given the recent media reports outlining the difficulties facing global luxury brands, we are happy to buck that trend in our luxury Boutiques, where we are seeing continued demand for select brands,' Cidambi added. Staying within the Luxury sector, of particular note is the growing momentum of DDF's pre-loved luxury boutique, REKLAIM, launched in December 2024. Located in Concourses A, including in the Emirates First Class Lounge, Concourse B and D, REKLAIM offers a curated selection of authenticated pre-owned watches and handbags from top-tier luxury brands. In just over seven months REKLAIM has generated more than Dhs14.3 million (US$3.9 million) in sales of which AED1.6 million (US$445K) was generated in July alone, a clear testament to its growing appeal among luxury-focused shoppers. The stand-out performer was Rolex watches, with a total of 176 sold since the launch of REKLAIM, with 16 sold in July alone. Dubai Duty Free's success comes against a backdrop of growing competition within the airport retail space as well as from external sources, including domestic retailers. With continued investment in product innovation, digital engagement, and experiential retail, Dubai Duty Free is well-positioned to close out 2025 as one of the strongest years in its 40+ year history. 'This outstanding achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team and the unwavering support from our Chairman, Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
