Saudi educator awarded Global Teacher Prize
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and the UAE's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, presented the award during the World Governments Summit in Dubai.
Al-Mansour, a teacher at Prince Saud bin Jalawi School in Al-Ahsa, has volunteered over 3,000 hours helping his community, and was selected from over 5,000 nominations and applications from 89 countries.
Since 2001, Al-Mansour has been teaching in low-income neighbourhoods, supporting students facing academic challenges, including those with disabilities, learning difficulties, and children from illiterate families.
He also helped his students take part in the 'Riyali Financial Awareness Initiative', aimed at empowering low-income students by equipping them with entrepreneurship skills and financial literacy training to become financially independent.
In collaboration with charitable organisations, Mansour provided interest-free loans of SAR 500 per student to establish small business kiosks, with students earning between SAR 1,300 to 1,500 within two months.
Beyond his work with students, Al-Mansour has authored more than 21 books on education, including subjects like innovative teaching and professional ethics, and provided over 300 training hours to educators across the Gulf region.
His impactful contributions also led to his appointment as an international ambassador for the Hamdan Bin Rashid Foundation in Dubai, travelling across Gulf countries sharing his expertise and training teachers.

Now in its ninth year, the GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize, a Varkey Foundation initiative organised in collaboration with UNESCO, was set up to recognise one exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the profession as well as to shine a spotlight on the important role teachers play in society.
The top 10 finalists for the 2025 award were Brett Dascombe from Australia; Céline Haller from France; Erick Hueck from the US; Karina Sarro from Argentina; Mohammad Imran Khan Mewati from India; Muhammad Nazmi from Malaysia; Ramón Majé Floriano from Colombia; Subash Chandar K from New Zealand; and Tionge Mtambo from Malawi.
Candidates are assessed on teaching practices, how they innovate to address local challenges, achieve demonstrable learning outcomes, impact the community beyond the classroom, help children become global citizens, improve the teaching profession, and gain recognition from external bodies.

US envoy discusses Syria's post-war future with Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministers
US special envoy Thomas Barrack has met the foreign ministers of Jordan and Syria, to discuss ways to support the process of rebuilding Syria after years of civil war. Talks between the US, Syria and Jordan are mostly focused on enabling reconstruction efforts and securing foreign investment, but will also tackle other pressing issues, such as protecting minorities from attacks like the recent violence against the Druze community in Sweida. The meeting comes as Damascus seeks international investment to revive its economy, which has been devastated by nearly 14 years of conflict. The UN has estimated that Syria's postwar reconstruction will cost more than $400 billion. Amman has increasingly engaged with Damascus as part of regional efforts to stabilise the situation and encourage more investment, but the Syrian government is facing mounting pressure to address increasing security issues. Last month, Jordan held a meeting with its Syrian counterparts 'to address the consolidation of the ceasefire in the Sweida governorate in southern Syria' a statement from the ministry said. Last week, Damascus signed 12 major agreements valued at $14 billion, including a $4 billion deal with Qatar's UCC Holding to build a new airport and a $2 billion agreement with the UAE's National Investment Corporation to construct a subway in Damascus.

Iraq to build 20 new cities near Baghdad
Iraq is planning to build 20 new residential cities in and around the capital Baghdad to ease congestion in the city and tackle a festering housing supply shortage. The construction and housing ministry has launched studies for the allocation of sufficient land to accommodate the new satellite cities. 'The ministry has started preparing studies for the allocation and expansion of land needed to accommodate 20 new cities in the Baghdad province,' the ministry's spokesman Nabil Al-Saffar said in local press comments on Monday. He said the ministry is also pushing ahead with plans to build an administrative capital In Baghdad similar to Egypt's New Administrative Capital. Officials reported this year that the ministry has received bids from four Egyptian companies and other foreign developers to build the administrative capital. 'Al-Rafeel City,' with an area of 265 square kilometres, will accommodate more than 75,000 people and comprise houses, government offices as well as commercial, education, health and amusement facilities. Last year, Egypt's ORA Developers was awarded the main contract for a new mega residential city 'Ali Al-Wardi, located in the southeast of Baghdad. Ali Al-Wardi is one of about 10 contracts awarded over the past three years to construct new cities that could house more than two million people. The planning ministry said in a study in 2024 that Iraq, OPEC's second largest oil producer, needs to build at least three million houses for citizens in the next five years to shore up the supply gap.
