Iraq to build 20 new cities near Baghdad
The construction and housing ministry has launched studies for the allocation of sufficient land to accommodate the new satellite cities.
'The ministry has started preparing studies for the allocation and expansion of land needed to accommodate 20 new cities in the Baghdad province,' the ministry's spokesman Nabil Al-Saffar said in local press comments on Monday.
He said the ministry is also pushing ahead with plans to build an administrative capital In Baghdad similar to Egypt's New Administrative Capital.
Officials reported this year that the ministry has received bids from four Egyptian companies and other foreign developers to build the administrative capital.
'Al-Rafeel City,' with an area of 265 square kilometres, will accommodate more than 75,000 people and comprise houses, government offices as well as commercial, education, health and amusement facilities.
Last year, Egypt's ORA Developers was awarded the main contract for a new mega residential city 'Ali Al-Wardi, located in the southeast of Baghdad.
Ali Al-Wardi is one of about 10 contracts awarded over the past three years to construct new cities that could house more than two million people.
The planning ministry said in a study in 2024 that Iraq, OPEC's second largest oil producer, needs to build at least three million houses for citizens in the next five years to shore up the supply gap.

Israeli air strikes on Lebanon have breached a ceasefire about 600 times, the head of Israel's army boasted on Thursday. Lt Gen Eyal Zamir visited Israeli troops still operating in Lebanon, where he said about 240 "terrorists" had been killed in strikes that regularly pound the south – and sometimes Beirut – despite the truce with Hezbollah last year. The November ceasefire also called for Israel to withdraw troops from Lebanon but its army maintains five positions in the south. He said Israel's operations in Lebanon had created a "new security and physical reality" that later enabled strikes on Iran during a 12-day war in June. Hezbollah did not intervene in that conflict. Israel's war in Lebanon killed thousands of people, left behind an estimated $11 billion of damage and left Hezbollah reeling from the deaths of senior figures, including leader Hassan Nasrallah. After the ceasefire deal was struck, a new Lebanese government took office, which is now pushing ahead with plans to disarm Hezbollah and bring all weapons under state control. Under the proposals, Lebanon's armed forces are to draw up plans this month to disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year. Hezbollah rejects the proposals as bowing to Israeli and US pressure. Lt Gen Zamir's visit to Lebanon came hours after he approved the "main framework" for Israel's expanded war in Gaza. The general has done little to dispel rumours that he opposed the new offensive behind the scenes and that his objections were overruled by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu 's security cabinet. His visit came on the day that Iran 's new security council chief Ali Larijani visited Beirut to warn against disarming Hezbollah. He was told, though, by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun that Lebanon "does not accept anyone interfering in its internal affairs" and regards Tehran's comments on the matter as unhelpful.

PBC-DNE holds dialogue with UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade to discuss opportunities, support for Filipino business community
The Philippine Business Council – Dubai and Northern Emirates (PBC-DNE) held a high-level dialogue with His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, to explore ways to support the Filipino business community in the host country. PBC Chairwoman Evangeline 'Asiyah' Monjardin, along with the Board of Directors, Secretary General Arch. Wilfredo Llarena Jr., Trade & Compliance Director Mary Jane Alvero Almahdi, Director of Corporate Governance and Compliance Harold Grecia Orona, and Membership Director Shiela Pellano, attended the meeting to represent council members and affiliates, ensuring the interests of Filipino professionals and business owners were shared. Monjardin said the council presented its accomplishments over more than 100 days during the meeting, which provided an avenue for mutual collaboration. 'We had the opportunity to hear the ministry's plans, goals, and vision for the Filipino community, while also consolidating and presenting the priorities and opportunities identified by our members. The dialogue became a platform for us to voice our interest, share expectations, and encourage greater engagement between the Philippine business community and the UAE government,' Monjardin said in an interview with The Filipino Times . Among the topics discussed were the ongoing dialogue between the Philippine Government and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade to enhance bilateral trade relations, and the Ministry's willingness to support the PBC and the broader Filipino business community in navigating the UAE business landscape. In the works PBC-DNE and the Ministry also discussed development initiatives, including Golden Visa for eligible PBC members. In 2022, H.E. Al Zeyoudi awarded Golden Visa status to PBC members, and the council requested a second batch of endorsements to continue supporting its members. In addition, training sessions and seminars on entrepreneurship, business skills, and trade knowledge for Filipino entrepreneurs, SMEs, and professionals were proposed to improve awareness and provide practical guidance. Monjardin noted that the ministry acknowledged these initiatives as work in progress. The council also announced the expansion of its subcommittees to include Hospitality, Tourism, and Retail, which was welcomed by the ministry. The Filipino business community in Dubai and Northern Emirates has grown steadily in recent years. Egypt's Town Writers ramps up construction activity in NAC and New Cairo
Egyptian private real estate developer Town Writers is accelerating construction across its portfolio in the New Administrative Capital (NAC) and New Cairo, designating 2025 as the 'Year of Construction.' Founder and Chairman Omar El Saadawy told Zawya Projects that they are working 'around the clock' to deliver on their commitments. He said Town Writers has allocated 600 million Egyptian pounds ($12.4 million) for construction this year and plans to inject an additional EGP 1.2 billion ($25 million) in 2026 to maintain delivery timelines and meet technical specifications. The company, among the early investors in the NAC, has delivered premium commercial projects such as Downtown Mall I and II, and is developing several other schemes including Revolve in New Cairo, and 88HUB, Central Point, and Strip Malls in the NAC. Construction milestones include 87 percent completion at Downtown Mall I, 75 percent at Downtown Mall II, and 88 percent at Revolve. In the NAC, 88HUB has reached 25 percent completion, Central Point 17 percent, and Strip Mall 10 percent.
