Browns GM Andrew Berry on Shedeur Sanders' speeding tickets: 'Not smart, just not smart'

Yahoo26-07-2025
BEREA — Both Browns general manager Andrew Berry and coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the speeding tickets rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders picked up during the offseason.
"Not smart, just not smart, and it's something that we've addressed with him," Berry said on the second day of Browns training camp. "He understands the implications, he understands the consequences. I think the thing is it's not just about yourself. It's not just about having a joy ride, it's not just about driving a car really fast, but it's about the fact that you can endanger other people. It's about the fact that if a deer or someone cuts out in front of you, like your reaction time. It's just dangerous and it's not something that we want our guys to be doing. It's not something that they should be doing."
Sanders, who was taken in the fifth round of April's draft, was ticketed in Medina on June 5 after he was clocked going 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. He then received a ticket in Strongsville on June 17 for going 101 mph in a 60 mph zone on Interstate 71.
Sanders addressed them in a social media post during David Njoku's celebrity softball game on June 19, saying, 'I've made some wrong choices. I gotta own up to them. ... I learn from them.'
The rookie out of the University of Colorado, where he played for his father, Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, is one of four quarterback competing for the Browns' starting job. The others are veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as well as third-round draft pick Dillon Gabriel.
Stefanski said the matter has been addressed with Sanders.
"Obviously I'll keep that message between Shadeur and myself," Stefanski said. "I will tell you he knows this and all of our rookies know this. They need to make sure that they're being safe and that can be whether they're behind the wheel of a car or they're in and around town. They need to make really good decisions so that they're safe."
Berry pointed to the incident involving Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice. In March 2024, Rice was driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph on a Dallas highway when he made "aggressive maneuvers" and collided with multiple vehicles.
Rice pleaded guilty to two felony charges: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. A Dallas County judge sentenced Rice to 30 days in jail and five years of probation, as well as having to pay more than $115,000 in restitution.
"The No. 1 reason is because we don't want some type of catastrophic accident," Berry said. "We saw that two years ago when — what was it? Dallas or Houston — with a player, and in that incident everybody was lucky to walk away. We don't want that occurring with anyone in our organization."

'They keep me young': Veteran Shelby Harris enjoys leading Browns young defensive linemen

BEREA — Shelby Harris is the ultimate pro athlete paradox. The Browns' veteran defensive tackle is 33 years old. In two weeks, on Aug. 11, he's going to turn 34. In pro football terms, or in general pro athlete terms, is considered "old." Look pretty much anywhere else, and being 33-going-on-34 is the prime of life. Harris knows that as well as anyone. "Man, I'm young, too," Harris said following the Browns' ninth training camp practice Aug. 2. "You got to think about it, at the end of the day in life, being 33, about to turn 34, that's young. So this football stuff ages us." Harris — who was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of the 2014 draft, the same one in which the Browns selected Joel Bitonio in the second round — isn't afraid to lean into the old-guy bit either. The man they call "Unc" around the Browns was coming out to the field for one of the first open training camp practice when he yelled out to no one in particular, "Here comes the old man." The father of four children, the oldest an 18-year-old daughter Kamaya, who'll be playing softbal at Fort Hays State University. The youngest is a 4-year-old son Shelby Jr., who was born near the end of his father's fourth season with the Denver Broncos. Those four children are in addition to the other "kids" in his life. Those are the collection of 20-somethings he shared a defensive line meeting room with on a daily basis with the Browns. "I just think it's cool because you got to think, I got a daughter about to go to college and these dudes just got out of college," Harris said. "It's a full circle moment. But I embrace it, though. They keep me young. I love it because I hear music I don't hear all the time, and it's just little things like that where you appreciate what the young players can bring to the table. I just think that everybody brings something a little bit unique and a little bit different and it's all welcomed." A look around the Browns' defensive line shows just how young the position group is comparative to Harris. He and 30-year-old defensive tackle Maliek Collins are the only two whose age starts with a number three, although All-Pro Myles Garrett will turn 30 on Dec. 29, the same day Harris' youngest son turns 5. The rest of the group? The ones the Browns have invested the most in are not too far removed from just becoming legal to drink: 21-year-old rookie Mason Graham, 22-year-old second-year pro Mike Hall Jr. and a pair of 24-year-old defensive ends Alex Wright and Isaiah McGuire. Harris won't go as fas as to say the youthful group of defensive linemen has left him feeling 10 years younger or anything like that. He will say that it's left the nearly 34-year-old veteran with a youthful spirit, and in a way, giving him a new connection to his own kids as well. "Football years, the kids are young and then I'm telling you, like, having an 18-year-old, I'd be listening to stuff," Harris said. "I'm like, what the hell did that come from? And that's why I just think it's cool, because we always talk about it, me and my wife will, but like, half these kids are closer to my daughter's age than they are to my age. And so I just think this is a cool moment where I can go up there and still kind of be one of the guys, even though I'm older, and then I gotta go home and be dad to pretty much the same age." Harris' isn't playing like he's in his mid 30s, at least not over the first nine days of training camp. That's coming off a second season in Cleveland that was cut short by a Week 15 elbow injury, although he still managed to record 1.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, forced one fumble and nine combined pressures in the season. Over his first two years with the Browns, Harris has recorded five passes batted at the line of scrimmage, giving him 21 over his career. He's contined that going into his latest training camp, including the rejection of rookie quarterback Dillon Gabiel early in Saturday's practice. "Back to my Denver days, they've always put an emphasis on, at least if you can see the quarterback's eyes, get your hands up, if you're not going to get the sack, at least make something happen," Harris said. z{I didn't even realize they were on Dillon, but that's just something I've always done. I've led the league a couple times in batted balls, and so it's just something that the more you can do. That's the way I look at it." Cleveland Browns training camp Day 9: Live updates on a Saturday morning

BEREA — The Browns are scheduled to have another day off on Aug. 3. Before they can get there, however, they have to get through Aug. 2. Specifically, the Browns have to get through another morning practice. This one, as has been the case with the other two, starts at 9:30 a.m. It's the final Saturday practice of training camp, as well. It's the next-to-last training camp practice open to fans. Follow along here for news, notes and comments to emerge from Day 9 of Cleveland Browns training camp. Kenny Pickett to remain limited in practice as hamstring heals Quarterback Kenny Pickett was a practice participant for the second day in a row. He had missed three consecutive practices with a hamstring injury suffered on July 26. Pickett did just individual and one-on-one drills during his first practice back on Aug. 1. Coach Kevin Stefanski said it would be more of the same on his second day back. "Yeah, he's pushing himself to get back to full team periods as soon as possible," Stefanski said. "We're also going to be smart and be appropriate with where he is. I thought he did a nice job yesterday and we'll continue to work that day to day." Stefanski wouldn't say if Pickett was going to be participate in either the Aug. 6 joint practice at the Carolina Panthers, or the preseason opener two days after that. The Browns have an off day on Aug. 3 before an afternoon practice in Berea Aug. 4. Kevin Stefanski on Dillon Gabriel's rough eighth practice Eight was not great for rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel. Day 8, that is. On a day when none of the quarterbacks had great days, Gabriel's day was near the bottom. He struggled against the pressure, especially in the handful of snaps with the first team. "There's the old adage that's never as bad as you think or never as good as you think as a coach when you go in to watch a tape," coach Kevin Stefanski said. "I would tell you with any of our players, and in particular Dillon who's wants to be great and wants to be great at practice, there's times that you're going to go through a tough period out here at practice, a tough seven-on-seven, a tough team period, whatever it may be, and then you really try to learn from those reps." Greg Newsome II, Myles Garrett will not practice as 'precaution' Cornerback Greg Newsome II and defensive end Myles Garrett both will not practice Saturday. Newsome is 'day to day,' according to coach Kevin Stefanski, after injuring his shoulder during practice the previous day. Garrett, according to Stefanski, is "just precautionary, rest." When asked to provide more context, the coach said, "Just taking care of him." Browns reporter takes savage shot at Bill Belichick-Jordon Hudson romance in Hall of Fame speech

Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot took a brutal jab at Bill Belichick's highly publicized romance with 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson on Friday when she accepted the Bill Nunn Memorial Award during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Gold Jacket Dinner in Canton, Ohio. Cabot, who began covering the Browns in 1991, the same year Belichick, 73, took over as coach in Cleveland, first joked about going through the wringer with the future Hall of Famer. 'Bill Belichick was the first Browns coach I ever covered,' Cabot began, as covered by Awful Announcing. 'You see, if you start out with Bill Belichick, no one can rattle you after that. If Bill didn't like something I wrote, he'd call and yell at me. If you asked a dumb question, he'd call you out. Eventually, I had to learn to stand up to him. During one of those yelling matches, I told him, if you don't have the 'footballs' to say that to the guys, then don't say it to me. Bam.' Getty Images That's when Cabot's speech pivoted to the UNC coach's widely scrutinized personal life. Advertisement 'But now, I totally understand why Bill gave me such a hard time. I was 28 at the time, and he just couldn't relate to a woman that old,' Cabot said as the audience roared with laughter. Although many on social media also chuckled over Cabot's zinger, the remarks didn't appear to please everyone. 4 Mary Kay Cabot speaks at the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Gold Jacket Dinner on Aug. 1, 2025. No wonder so many have contempt for the media, especially those who want to be the story rather than [report] on the story.' Belichick's romance with Hudson was first revealed in June 2024. 4 Bill Belichick is preparing for his first season as football coach of the Tar Heels. AP Their relationship has largely been under a microscope following a disastrous 'CBS Sunday Morning' interview in April, when Hudson pushed back on a question intended for Belichick about how they met. Advertisement Amid speculation about her role in Belichick's personal and professional endeavors, the eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach made it clear in May that Hudson does not 'have anything to do with UNC football.' Belichick and the Tar Heels open the 2025 season against TCU on Sept. 1.
