Why Orlando Pirates risk losing Relebohile Mofokeng

Orlando Pirates phenom Relebohile Mofokeng has been head and shoulders above the rest with his silky skills and veteran-like composure.
Following a breakout 2023/24 season, the 20-year-old has lived up to the hype with twenty-three goals and assists this season, including seven in eleven Champions League outings, highlighting his world-class potential.
A superstar in the making, Mofokeng has hardly put a foot wrong this campaign, seducing several foreign suitors, including Egyptian giants Zamalek FC, who had their R25.8 million bid rejected earlier this year.
Although a move never materialised, the offer should come as a warning sign to Orlando Pirates, who will undoubtedly have many giants of the game after his services. Other clubs linked with the starlet include Al Ahly, Barcelona, and Glasgow Rangers.
Amplifying the exit murmurs is Bafana boss Hugo Broos, who believes it will be Mofokeng's last season with Orlando Pirates.
'Talking about Mofokeng, I just hope that he makes the right decisions. And that he is not going to a team where he won't play,' Broos predicts.
'I see all the things around, Barcelona and Rangers and… (sighs) I'm a little bit afraid. I just hope that the people around make the choice of the best sportive solution and not the best financial solution.
'Okay, I think his parents want the best for him, that's for sure. But there is another guy who wants to win a lot of money also, but that's the problem. But ok, let's hope, maybe I talked too soon about that.
'We'll see. I think in June, Rele will not be a player of Orlando Pirates anymore, but a good choice is very important.'

South Africa guaranteed a team in URC final after Bulls and Sharks keep the flag flying

Ruan Nortjie, captain of the Bulls, is set to lead his team again, this time against the Sharks in the semi-finals of the URC on Saturday. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix South Africa will maintain its proud record of having a team in the final of the United Rugby Championship (URC), after the Bulls and Sharks won their quarter-finals at the weekend and now face off in a semi-final in Pretoria on Saturday. Since the inception of the URC, a South African team has featured in every final. The inaugural 2021/22 season culminated in a final in Cape Town between the victorious Stormers and the Bulls. The following year, the Stormers lost a home final to Munster, and last year, the Bulls hosted the final against the Glasgow Warriors, who won it. Video Player is loading. Dublin's Croke Park, Loftus Versfeld, and Kings Park are the three possible venues for the final, with the top-seeded finalists among Leinster, the Bulls, and Sharks keen to host the decider. The Warriors are the only semi-finalists who cannot host the final, even if they upset Leinster at the Aviva Stadium, as the other three teams all finished above Glasgow on the URC points table. South Africans will be backing Franco Smith's Glasgow side, as a Leinster defeat would ensure the final is played in South Africa — either in Pretoria or Durban. Of the four semi-finalists, only the Warriors have previously won the URC, while the Bulls were runners-up in 2022 and 2024. The Sharks are making their first-ever appearance in a semi-final, while, remarkably, eight-time league winners Leinster are still chasing their first appearance in a final in the URC era. The Sharks have enjoyed a meteoric rise this season, having finished 14th in last year's competition. History suggests that both the Sharks and the Warriors are capable of upsetting their favoured hosts in Pretoria and Dublin, respectively. The first three seasons of URC play-offs have seen several away wins — including at the semi-final stage — and these evenly poised match-ups could yet see triumphs for the travelling teams. The Bulls and Sharks kept the South African flag flying on Saturday, after the Stormers delivered their worst performance of the season in losing 36–18 to the Warriors on Friday night. The Bulls delivered under pressure in an entertaining encounter against Edinburgh in Pretoria. Trailing 21–8 after the opening 20 minutes, they recovered well to win 42–33. There was drama in Durban, where the Sharks and Munster drew 24–24 after 80 minutes, sending the match into extra time and then a penalty shootout. The hosts triumphed 6–4 to advance to the semi-final.

THEORY: Real reason why Orlando Pirates didn't win the league

Orlando Pirates came short in their push for the Betway Premiership title. There were a few factors, but one isn't talked about enough. When Thabiso Sesane was cut down with a serious injury, nobody knew how profound an effect that event would have on Pirates' title charge. On paper, central defence is arguably the team's deepest resource with Tapelo Xoki, Olisa Ndah and Nkosinathi Sibisi as options. However, Ndah has battled injuries and both Xoki and Sibisi have suffered dips in form. The late-season emergence of an outstandingly gifted teenager, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, has been a huge boost, but none of the club's existing centre-halves have Sesane's unique skill set. The 25-year-old was quietly and effectively becoming the marshal of Pirates' back four. It's hoped that he'll be fit in time for the early stages of the 2025-2026 campaign. What did Makgopa and Mabasa do to offend Hugo Broos? Thabiso Sesane at the Orlando Stadium. Image: @orlandopiratesfc/X One X user said: 'Do not touch King Hotto,' presumably suggesting that the club would be foolish to release the versatile 34-year-old Deon Hotto. The Namibian is still a dependable player and popular among fans and teammates, and managers, comfortable in several positions and tactical systems. Since joining from Wits in 2020, club stalwart Hotto has notched up over 200 appearances, collecting six trophies. To say he's an underrated performer is a massive understatement. Broos explains why he likes Orlando Pirates star Selepe Is Sesane the best central defender in South Africa when fit? Let us know by leaving a comment below or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Mamelodi Sundowns' Miguel Cardoso expresses pride despite CAF Champions League final loss

DISAPPOINTMENT Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso reflected with pride on the team's journey in CAF Champions League despite their loss to Pyramids FC in the final, highlighting their victories over top-ranked Al Ahly and Esperance. Seen here: Sundowns' Lucas Ribeiro. Picture: Gavin Barker/BackpagePix Despite defeat in the CAF Champions League final to Pyramids FC in Cairo on Sunday evening, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso was still immensely proud of his charges. Sundowns lost 2-1 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate over the two legs, after the 1-1 draw in Pretoria a week prior. After the first leg, it was always going to be a difficult proposition to beat the Egyptian outfit on their home turf. That task became even more daunting when Fiston Mayele opened the scoring for the hosts inside the first 25 minutes, and then Ahmed Samy doubled the scoreline for Pyramids just ahead of the hour mark. Iqraam Rayners pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, but Sundowns fell one strike short of what would have won them the title through the away goal rule. After the match, Cardoso was quick to point out the number of high-profile teams his side had dispatched during the premier African competition.
