Nine in 10 Malaysians read scam alerts, but fear still fuels fraud, banking survey shows

Malay Mail6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Nine in 10 Malaysians actively read scam-related alerts, with satisfaction levels rising to 73 per cent, according to a survey released by the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) and the Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM).
The survey reflects a growing awareness of scams and rising public trust in the financial sector's protective measures, driven by the ongoing #JanganKenaScam national awareness campaign, the two associations said in a joint statement today.
Commissioned by the banking sector and conducted by Rakuten Insight between March and April 2025, the survey gathered responses from 1,000 individuals nationwide.
According to the survey, 92 per cent of users recognised the risks of installing unsolicited Android Package Kit (APK) files, 85 per cent could identify fake short message service (SMS) messages, 79 per cent avoided suspicious links, 82 per cent would contact their bank if compromised, and 77 per cent would freeze their cards via mobile or online banking.
ABM chairman Datuk Khairussaleh Ramli said the campaign has played a key role in improving public awareness and emphasised the need to move beyond education and towards behavioural readiness.
'We are seeing a positive shift in public awareness and trust, but we also recognise that scammers exploit fear and urgency to bypass rational thinking. From the survey, we saw that 71 per cent of respondents feared losing money if scammers' instructions were not followed, as the primary factor in scam cases,' he said.
According to the statement, Malaysians are also showing increased confidence in their banks' protection measures, with 76 per cent of respondents expressing satisfaction with their banks' overall effectiveness in safeguarding against scams, a 13 per cent rise from the previous survey.
Meanwhile, three in five respondents found their banks to be helpful after a scam had occurred, suggesting that post-incident support is becoming a trusted part of the response.
It also said social media remains the most common source of scam awareness, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, with seven in 10 Malaysians now actively sharing scam warnings within their networks, especially via WhatsApp, which reflects a growing culture of community-based vigilance.
AIBIM president Datuk Mohd Muazzam Mohamed said the results indicate that their awareness efforts are yielding positive outcomes, but they must not become complacent.
'Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, and our response must adapt in tandem. We want to equip Malaysians not only with information, but also with practical instincts and tools they can rely on in moments of uncertainty,' he said. — Bernama

Ex-aide to MP arrested for allegedly posting unauthorised video on Facebook

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Police arrested an MP's former personal assistant for uploading a video of the MP without authorisation and knowledge to his Facebook account. Ampang Jaya district police chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail said the man, 43, was arrested at 11.30 am on Friday in Pasir Mas, Kelantan after the MP discovered the video post on a Facebook account named 'Mohd Syahrizal' on July 30. 'The post resulted in negative comments by other Facebook users that stressed the individual and affected their reputation and psychological state, causing the MP to feel threatened and afraid should anything happen to them due to the Facebook account holder's actions. 'A Samsung and a Vivo mobile phone belonging to the suspect were seized to facilitate investigations,' he said in a statement today, adding that the suspect has been remanded for four days from Aug 9 till tomorrow. The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. — Bernama

Woman charged with attempted murder of policeman in Setapak car ramming incident

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — A woman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of attempting to murder a police officer by ramming her car into him and causing injury earlier this month. Cham Shan Jer, 31, is accused of ramming her car into Cpl Muhamad Fahrulradi Sabran at Jalan Usahawan 6, Setapak, around 11.15 pm on Aug 1. She was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 10 years and a fine. If the act causes injury, the penalty can extend to 20 years' imprisonment, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Ikhwan Mohd Nasir objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the case involving an alleged attempt to kill a police officer. However, defence counsel Nurul Fatihah Abdul Ghani urged the court to grant bail, citing that her client, a single mother of three, also cares for her elderly parents. 'My client is a single mother. We request bail to be set at the lowest possible amount,' she said. Judge Dr Azrol Abdullah denied bail and fixed Sept 23 for case mention and submission of documents. — Bernama

Foreign investors turn net buyers of US$996mil in Asian markets last week

In Malaysia, foreign investors extended their net selling streak to their fifth consecutive week, registering a net outflow of RM1.14 billion. (AP pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Foreign investors turned net buyers in Asian markets last week, reversing the previous week's outflow, recording an inflow of US$996 million (RM4.22 billion), with Taiwan recording the highest purchases in the region. MBSB Investment Bank Bhd's fund flow report for the week ended Aug 8, 2025, reported that only India and the Philippines registered net foreign outflows, while all other countries saw net inflows. It said Taiwan posted the region's largest net inflow at US$2.06 billion (RM8.72 billion), more than 2.5 times last week's US$820.8 million (RM3.48 billion), marking a seventh consecutive week of foreign buying, with sentiment lifted by the second quarter of calendar year 2025 (Q2 2025) gross domestic product (GDP) growth. 'Fitch reaffirmed Taiwan's long-term sovereign rating at 'AA' with a stable outlook, citing strong fiscal discipline and robust external balances. 'However, the outlook is clouded by potential 100% tariffs on semiconductor imports, which account for around 80% of Taiwan's US-bound exports,' the report said. Meanwhile, Korea recorded a net inflow of US$344.9 million (RM1.46 billion), extending foreign investors' buying streak to five weeks, supported by moderating inflation and resilient export performance. It said Thailand attracted US$199.5 million (RM844.68 million), 3.6 times higher than the prior week's US$54.9 million (RM232.45 million), following the GDP growth forecast revised upward after the US tariff cut on Thai goods. Regarding outflows, MBSB noted that India recorded the region's largest outflow at US$1.34 billion (RM5.67 billion), extending its losing streak to four weeks, as investors weighed tariff risks and monetary policy signals. 'The Reserve Bank of India kept its policy repo (repurchase) rate unchanged at 5.5% and maintained its financial year 2026 GDP growth forecast at 6.5%, citing a more benign inflation outlook but warning of potential growth risks from prolonged 50% US tariffs,' said the report. It said the Philippines saw a marginal outflow of US$0.1 million (RM0.42 million), its second week of net selling, despite reporting Q2 2025 GDP growth of 5.5% year-on-year – the fastest pace in a year – on a sharp rebound in agriculture and steady household spending. 'The recent reduction in US tariffs on Philippine goods from 20% to 19% has eased some external headwinds, while the central bank remains watchful of inflation risks from geopolitical tensions and external policy uncertainty,' it added. On the domestic front, the investment bank said foreign investors extended their net selling streak to their fifth consecutive week, registering a net outflow of RM1.14 billion, with the largest outflow recorded on Tuesday (RM291 million). 'The only two sectors that recorded net foreign inflows last week were industrial products and services (RM62.7 million) and transportation and logistics (RM36.2 million). 'The top three sectors that recorded the highest net foreign outflows were financial services (-RM344.3 million), healthcare (-RM239.1 million) and utilities (-RM210.2 million),' it said. The report, however, said that local institutions extended their net buying streak to two consecutive weeks, registering purchases of RM1.03 billion, 3.9 times higher than the previous week's inflow of RM263.7 million. 'Meanwhile, local retailers continued their net buying activities, extending to a fifth consecutive streak of purchases, posting a net inflow of RM105.5 million,' it said. MBSB said the average daily trading volume experienced a broad-based decline last week, with foreign investors and local retailers recording a decline of 6.6% and 6.1%, respectively, while local institutions saw an increase of 4.8%.
