The change will disproportionately affect the Indian diaspora, which faces one of the world's longest waits for an employment-based green card. The Child Status Protection Act (CSPA), enacted in 2002, prevents certain unmarried children of green card applicants from losing eligibility if they turn 21 during the lengthy process. Undo From February 2023, USCIS had used the more generous 'Dates for filing chart' to determine visa availability, giving children a longer window to remain eligible as derivatives on their parent's application. Starting Aug 15, for adjustment of status filed after that date, USCIS will revert to the 'Final action dates chart' — typically less favourable — for calculating age under the CSPA. Immigration attorneys say that in practical terms, this revision means many children who would have been protected under the previous policy will now risk aging out and losing their path to permanent residency (green card). According to a March 2023 analysis by David J. Bier, director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, the employment-based green card backlog stood at 10.7 lakh for Indians in the employment linked (EB-2 and EB-3 categories). Cato projects that nearly 1.34 lakh children from these families could age out before a green card becomes available — and the more restrictive age calculation could push those numbers higher. Doug Rand, a former Department of Homeland Security official who helped craft the 2023 policy, criticised the reversal. 'It's such a petty and obnoxious thing to do. Of course, the Trump administration is causing fear and heartbreak at a massive scale, across the immigration system, and this may seem like a small thing in the grand scheme,' he said.

PM likely to open Buxar thermal project on Aug 22
Buxar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi , who is scheduled to visit Gaya on Aug 22, is expected to formally inaugurate the 1,320MW Buxar thermal power project at Chausa in Buxar district. Modi had laid the foundation for the project in 2019 and his visit could mark its official commissioning. The plant has entered its final preparatory stage with the first consignment of coal from Hazaribagh in Jharkhand recently arriving at the Chausa rake point and being transported to the project site by truck. This coal will be used for the trial operation of the plant's first 660MW unit. To mark the milestone, officials from SJVN Thermal Private Limited (STPL) performed a traditional puja ceremony on Saturday. STPL chief financial officer Neeraj Kumar and other senior executives were present. "Trial runs will begin shortly," they said. Developed at a cost of Rs 11,000 crore, the project comprises two units of 660MW each. The water supply system has already undergone successful testingand with coal now on site, all major prerequisites for power generation are in place. Once operational, the plant is expected to supply 85% of its electricity to Bihar, significantly boosting the state's power capacity. 1 2 Bhagalpur: Bihar Agricultural University (BAU) has won national recognition for its pioneering work in sustainable farming, securing four innovation awards at the 2nd National Sustainable Agriculture Conference in New Delhi. Ramdas Athawale, minister of state for social justice and empowerment, presented BAU with the 'Regenerative agriculture award' for its climate resilient agriculture programme (CRAP), launched in 2019. This initiative has benefited over 45,000 farmers in 18 districts by promoting minimal tillage, organic inputs, water conservation, improved soil health and reduced carbon emissions. BAU also received the 'excellence in water management award' for technology-driven solutions in rain-fed and flood-prone areas, pond rejuvenation, remote sensing for crop planning, and nitrate contamination mapping, all of which boosted groundwater recharge and improved water quality. In organic farming, BAU earned the 'organic farming excellence award' for advancing value-added vermicompost and Azolla cultivation, helping over 5,000 farmers cut cultivation costs with sustainable inputs.
