Penang authorities probe fallen boulder incident on Jalan Tun Sardon
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the Public Works Department's (JKR) contractor were investigating the incident, which occurred in the morning.
'South-west District JKR received information from the public at 11.20 am regarding the incident. The boulder, measuring 12 square feet, had fallen from the hillside onto the road. As of now, the JKR contractor has removed it.
'All preliminary mitigation works are being carried out and the road has been reopened to public vehicles. At the same time, the JKR contractor, Pintas Utama Sdn Bhd, together with MBPP's geotechnical unit, are on site conducting a full investigation,' he said in a statement today.
He also urged all road users in the area to exercise extra caution when passing through the stretch.
Earlier, several photos showing the boulder on the road went viral, believed to have fallen from the hillside. No casualties or injuries were reported in the incident. — Bernama

'If no charges are made against this person by Thursday, I will go and give a class to teach this 'ah pek' how to correctly put up a flag,' he said in a video on Facebook. 'If this is hushed up … no matter, we will wait for the prosecutors to decide whether to charge or not. 'We ask for this person to be charged under a section (of the law) that provides for a stiffer sentence,' he said. Yesterday, police arrested the 59-year-old hardware store owner for hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down the day before. Acting Penang police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin said the investigation paper will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor's office today for further action. He said 16 reports had been received nationwide over the incident, including 12 from within Penang. The video of the incident showed a man hoisting the flag while another recorded it. Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner said he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the flag and did not notice that it was upside down. The owner said he rectified the mistake immediately after realising it. He apologised for the blunder and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation.

Police urge Umno Youth to cancel protest over flag gaffe, Akmal delays ‘class'
SEBERANG PERAI, Aug 10 — Police have reportedly advised Umno Youth not to proceed with its planned protest in Kepala Batas over a viral incident involving the Malaysian flag being displayed upside down at a hardware store here. According to a Malaysiakini report, acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin stressed that the man involved had already been arrested and that an investigation paper would be submitted to the state prosecutor's office with a recommendation to charge. 'We suggest that they do not proceed with it because the police have already taken appropriate action,' he was quoted as saying. Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh later announced that he was postponing his plan to 'teach' the store owner how to display the Jalur Gemilang 'As the police have made an arrest, and the apek who flew the Malaysian flag upside down will be charged tomorrow, we will give space to the prosecution to carry out the legal process, thus, the 'class' will be postponed,' he said on Facebook. He urged prosecutors and the court to punish the accused severely, warning that a light sentence would embolden others to disrespect the national flag. This follows the incident in Penang in which a hardware store owner was arrested for allegedly hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down, after a 20-second video of the act was widely shared online. Akmal had earlier announced plans to hold a protest at the store tomorrow, saying he and his supporters intend to 'teach' the owner how to properly display the national flag. The store owner, identified as Feng Jin Zhen, reportedly told Chinese-language daily Kwong Wah Yit Poh that he was measuring an iron pole to hoist the flag, did not realise its position, and corrected it immediately upon noticing.
