Responding to a reporter's question about Thuglak editor S Gurumurthy's meeting with PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss on Thursday, Nagenthiran said, 'Gurumurthy always aims to bring good governance in the country. In order to bring good governance and positivity to TN, we have formed a single largest alliance against DMK. While AIADMK is already on board, PMK will be joining us very soon.'

SC Cites 'Advisory' Role In Presidential Reference, Refuses To Set Aside Verdict On Timelines

The Supreme Court is hearing challenges to the Presidential Reference challenging its verdict to impose deadlines on the President and Governors on Bills passed by states. The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to set aside its April 12 verdict, where it imposed deadlines on President Droupadi Murmu and Governors to clear bills passed by states. A bench led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai said the court would only act in an 'advisory" role and not sit in appeal. The court's decision to impose deadlines on the President and Governors had raised constitutional questions on whether the court can impose timelines for Governors and the President to deal with bills passed by state assemblies. The five-judge bench, comprising Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice A Chandurkar, heard preliminary objections raised by advocate KK Venugopal, appearing for the Kerala government, and advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Tamil Nadu. The court said it was only sitting in an advisory jurisdiction and not sitting in appeal over the case involving Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK and Governor RN Ravi over withholding consent on Bills passed by the State Assembly. 'We will be expressing just a view of law, not on the decision in the Tamil Nadu case," said CJI Gavai in response to the objections by Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Discussions On Presidential Reference In April, the Supreme Court passed a verdict, saying the President should decide on the bills reserved for her consideration by the Governor within three months from the date on which such reference is received, calling Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi's decision to withhold Bills 'illegal". It also said that state governments can directly approach the Supreme Court if the President withholds assent on a bill sent by a Governor for consideration. This sparked questions over the jurisdiction of the judiciary over the executive. President Murmu exercised powers under Article 143(1) to know from the top court whether timelines could be imposed by judicial orders for the exercise of discretion by the President while dealing with the bills passed by state assemblies. In a five-page reference, President Murmu posed 14 questions to the Supreme Court and sought to know its opinion on powers of Governor and President under Articles 200 and 201 in dealing with bills passed by the state legislature. The governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu argued that the questions raised in the Reference were substantially and directly answered by the judgment in the TN Governor case by the two-judge bench. They said President Murmu's reference under Article 143 cannot be invoked to revisit the issues already decided in a judgment. Venugopal said the presidential evidence was an attempt to derail the verdict without filing a review. This was supported by Singhvi, who said that Article 143 cannot be used as an intra-court appeal; nor is it a substitute for review or curative powers. Meanwhile, the Centre, in its written submission, has said that imposing fixed timelines on Governors and the President to act on bills passed by a state Assembly would amount to one organ of the government assuming powers not vested in it by the Constitution, and lead to 'constitutional disorder". Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central government, supported the argument that the Supreme Court can revisit and even modify an earlier judgment while exercising Article 143. 'This is for the first time, the President felt functional disharmony arose and will arise because of no authoritative pronouncement," he said. 'There is a constitutional functional problem- how the governor and the President would act…the highest head of executive is seeking guidance, the judgments of five, three, and two have created a constitutional problem." The Court will resume hearing tomorrow. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. EPS alleges DMK uses empty ambulances to disrupt AIADMK rallies, threatens driver

Edappadi K Palaniswami, general secretary of the AIADMK, threatened an ambulance driver, claiming that empty ambulances were deliberately routed through party campaign meeting zones to disrupt his was campaigning in the Anaicut region in Tamil Nadu's Vellore district when an ambulance needed to pass through the large gathering. A passage was cleared for the vehicle, but EPS instructed party workers to check whether the ambulance was carrying any patients. advertisementAs the vehicle only had a driver and a technician on board, EPS described the situation as 'cheap politics' and accused the DMK of attempting to disrupt his campaign. 'Since the beginning, I've seen this at least in 30 meetings. Making ambulances pass through the crowd. I'm warning this Government, next time if such an ambulance comes, the ambulance might have to carry the patient. If an empty ambulance comes, the person driving the vehicle will become the patient and will have to be taken to the hospital,' he warned. Surendar, the driver of the 108 ambulance, said he had been instructed to attend to a patient and had to pass through Anaicut Police station, where he was briefly stopped. After ten minutes, he was forced to drive through the crowd as the event could not be paused. 'Owing to the large crowd, I had to go through the centre. People gave way but as I went near his vehicle, cadres surrounded us and pulled my shirt and another Emergency Medical Professional's (EMP) shirt who was with me. Our ID cards were torn but police helped us and made us reach the patient who we could only move after the crowd dispersed. They opened the back door and began to question why there was no patient inside. We are working 24 hrs for the people. We didn't go deliberately but had to due to the situation,' he Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam rejected EPS's allegations, calling his behaviour towards medical staff indecent. He said, 'Edappadi K Palaniswami says that the ambulance is coming wherever he goes. He is travelling on main roads. In Tamil Nadu we have 1,330 '108 ambulances' which are in life-saving duty, be it rural or urban regions. Everyone is appreciating 108 ambulances.''He is holding meetings in places where the ambulance goes and is blaming the vehicle. He is also asking for the details of the driver. It is indecent for the former chief minister to behave in such a manner to threaten medical professionals,' Subramaniam said.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Tamil Nadu

CPI not qualified to talk on AIADMK-BJP alliance: EPS

Coming down strongly on Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary R. Mutharasan's comments on the AIADMK-BJP alliance, Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Tuesday said that the CPI leader had no locus standi to talk about the NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu, as the DMK too had been in alliance with the saffron party in the 1999 general election and 2001 State Assembly poll. Mr. Palaniswami was reacting to Mr. Mutharasan's charge in Salem last week that the AIADMK leader had aligned with the BJP without consulting others in his party, prompting members to leave the party in recent weeks. Mr. Mutharasan was referring to former AIADMK leaders A. Anwhar Raajhaa and V. Maitreyan joining the DMK recently. 'Mr. Mutharasan (CPI) has no locus standi to talk about our alliance (AIADMK-BJP). What do the ruling DMK and Communist parties have in common in terms of ideology and principles to forge an alliance for polls?' he asked. Mr. Palaniswami said the Communist parties changed colour according to the political situation. But, the AIADMK's decisions were based on principles. In the 2021 Assembly polls, the AIADMK won 10 seats out of 11 seats in the Salem region despite fighting the election without an alliance,' he claimed Mr. Palaniswami was referring to the CPI State secretary's assertion that the AIADMK would be routed in Salem region, including Mr. Palaniswami's home turf of Edappadi constituency in the 2026 poll. Highlighting the steady increase in prices of essential commodities, the AIADMK leader blamed DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for not taking effective steps to contain inflation. On the other hand, under his leadership, the AIADMK regime kept prices under control even during the pandemic (COVID-19) by creating a Price Stabilisation Fund. Essential commodities were brought from other States and sold at lower prices to meet the demand in Tamil Nadu. This helped contain the rising prices. 'The DMK is only good at bringing down the curtains on good initiatives like Amma clinics launched by the AIADMK. They (DMK) closed 2,000 such clinics in Tamil Nadu, but once the AIADMK returns to power in 2026, 4,000 AMMA clinics will be opened,' he said.
