Uganda army kills 2 after explosion reported in capital
The authorities did not immediately confirm reports by NBS Television and other local media of an explosion near the Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine.
But army spokesman Chris Magezi posted on X that a 'counter-terrorism unit this morning intercepted and neutralized two armed terrorists in Munyonyo, an upscale city suburb'.
He said security services were on 'heightened alert to ensure the Martyrs Day celebrations proceed without disruption'.
Uganda marks Martyrs Day each June 3 to remember the killing of 45 Christian converts in the 1880s on the orders of Mwanga II, king of Buganda, which later became part of Uganda.
The event draws huge numbers of pilgrims from across east Africa and beyond.
Uganda, ruled by President Yoweri Museveni for almost 40 years, has faced persistent threats and attacks over the years from an array of actors, including some linked to the Islamic State group.

Two accused of supporting IS
JOHOR BARU: Two Bangladesh factory workers have been charged at a Sessions Court here for allegedly supporting the Islamic State (IS) group. Md Refat Bishat, 27, was accused of possessing an image of an IS flag in his mobile phone at a house in Jalan Datin Halimah, Larkin, here at around 4.30pm on July 10. No plea was recorded because the accused told the court he did not fully understand the charge, which was read to him in Bahasa Malaysia. 'Faham sikit-sikit saja,' he told the court. The charge was framed under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which carries imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine, and confiscation of the material. The offence, framed under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, carries life imprisonment or up to 40 years with a fine upon conviction. Md Mamun said he did not understand what was read to him. DPP Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff also requested for a Bangladeshi translator. Judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail granted the requests of both DPPs and fixed Sept 12 for next mention for both cases. In July, police announced they had smashed a network that was using social media to recruit supporters for the group with the arrest of more than 30 Bangladeshi nationals since April. The network had been spreading IS ideology and canvassing for funds from the migrant worker community to support its operations in Syria and Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi men charged with terrorism-related offences

(File pic) JOHOR BAHRU : Two Bangladeshi men were charged in the sessions court here today with terrorism-related offences. Md Mamun Ali, 31, was charged with providing support to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group through Facebook, using an account under the name of 'Sahifulla Islam', between July 28, 2023 and April 30, 2024. The charge, under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides for a life sentence or imprisonment of up to 30 years, and the possibility of a fine, upon conviction. Meanwhile, Refat Bishat, 27, was charged with possessing a picture of the IS terrorist group flag on an Honor X6a mobile phone at about 4.30pm on July 10, 2025, at a house in Larkin Industrial Estate. The charge, under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of up to seven years or a fine, and the forfeiture of the goods involved, upon conviction. The men were charged before judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail, who set Sept 12 for mention for the appointment of an interpreter. Deputy public prosecutors Maryam Jamielah Ab Manaff and Nur Ainaa Ridzwan appeared for the prosecution in the respective cases. The men meanwhile were unrepresented.

Hannah Yeoh files bankruptcy notice against Kamarul Zaman for unpaid damages
KUALA LUMPUR: Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has initiated bankruptcy proceedings against Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) lecturer Dr Kamarul Zaman Yusoff for unpaid defamation damages exceeding RM400,000. The High Court had ordered Kamarul Zaman to compensate Yeoh RM400,000 in damages and RM80,000 in costs for defamatory remarks made eight years ago. Yeoh's lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, confirmed the bankruptcy notice was filed on July 9 but could not be served directly to Kamarul Zaman. The court subsequently approved alternative service methods, including newspaper advertisements, on July 29. Kamarul Zaman has since applied to stay the court's decision pending an appeal at the Court of Appeal. The stay application hearing is scheduled for August 28, allowing Yeoh to enforce the judgment in the meantime. On May 30, Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman ruled in Yeoh's favour, dismissing Kamarul Zaman's claim that she lacked legal standing to sue. The defamation case stemmed from Facebook posts in 2017 where Kamarul Zaman accused Yeoh of promoting Christianity through her political role. He cited her autobiography, 'Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey,' as alleged proof of a Christian agenda to influence Malaysia.
