Hannah Yeoh files bankruptcy notice against Kamarul Zaman for unpaid damages
The High Court had ordered Kamarul Zaman to compensate Yeoh RM400,000 in damages and RM80,000 in costs for defamatory remarks made eight years ago.
Yeoh's lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, confirmed the bankruptcy notice was filed on July 9 but could not be served directly to Kamarul Zaman.
The court subsequently approved alternative service methods, including newspaper advertisements, on July 29.
Kamarul Zaman has since applied to stay the court's decision pending an appeal at the Court of Appeal.
The stay application hearing is scheduled for August 28, allowing Yeoh to enforce the judgment in the meantime.
On May 30, Judge Datuk Aliza Sulaiman ruled in Yeoh's favour, dismissing Kamarul Zaman's claim that she lacked legal standing to sue.
The defamation case stemmed from Facebook posts in 2017 where Kamarul Zaman accused Yeoh of promoting Christianity through her political role.
He cited her autobiography, 'Becoming Hannah: A Personal Journey,' as alleged proof of a Christian agenda to influence Malaysia.
Kamarul Zaman denied the posts were defamatory, maintaining his statements were justified. - Bernama

Sabah sets aside RM600K to help gig workers open EPF accounts

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is allocating about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said a total of 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF. 'I would like to announce that the... RM600,000 (is) to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open EPF accounts,' he said at Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday (Aug 17). On the event, he said the large presence of around 60,000 riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the public. 'I am impressed to see the support shown by participants from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion,' Hajiji said. Advising participants to prioritise safety while on the road, he hoped the gathering would help create greater awareness of its importance among two-wheeler enthusiasts. Hajiji said the state government viewed youths as assets, with various initiatives implemented to develop human capital. He said it had spent a total of RM1.33bil – RM848.26mil for education assistance and RM485mil for talent and skills development programmes – from 2021 to 2025. After his speech, Hajiji led the participants in prayers for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, the 13-year-old student who died on July 17, a day after being found unconscious on the ground floor of her school dormitory in Papar.

A viral video showing two elderly men casually smoking inside a Chinese restaurant — right beneath several 'No Smoking' stickers — has reignited frustrations over Malaysia's lax enforcement of smoking bans. The video, posted on Reddit by user @Adorable_Fool0, shows the pair puffing away in full view of diners, seemingly unfazed by the warning signs plastered on the walls. According to the uploader, one of the men caught lighting up was none other than the restaurant's owner. 'One of them is the owner, guys. Reported to the hotline already,' the Redditor wrote. The clip quickly gained traction, drawing hundreds of comments from Malaysians who shared similar experiences of smoke-filled eateries despite the nationwide ban. One commenter, @cyberkewl, said there was little customers could do. 'Nothing much can do other than if you dare — tegur (reprimand), if not just ignore. 'Shop owner also don't want do anything... they won't cos will lose their biz.' Another user, @Last_Commission8617, compared the situation to Singapore's stricter rules. Offenders face fines of up to RM5,000, while business owners can also be fined up to RM5,000 if they fail to display no-smoking signs, allow smoking, or neglect to take action against violators.
