Hip-hop duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids lose recording studio in Vancouver fire

CBC28-04-2025
Recent Juno winners Snotty Nose Rez Kids lost their recording studio, equipment, clothing store and more in an East Vancouver fire that took place on April 23.
The Haisla rappers Quinton "Yung Trybez" Nyce and Darren "Young D" Metz took to Instagram to share the news, writing: "With a heavy heart we had to watch while a fire took out our recording studio, our shop housing RBRTH clothing and our shop for Savage Kids, not to mention irreplaceable items like paintings, artwork, custom mask carvings and other items we'd come to cherish."
"So much time, energy, money and effort went into these and we watched it either burn up or get pummeled by water for 6+ hours," they continued.
The fire burned the Wohlford & Company building where their recording studio and Savage Kids clothing shop were located. Two other buildings were damaged in the blaze, and the fire is being investigated as suspicious.
In their Instagram post, Yung Trybez and Young D also shared that they launched a GoFundMe to raise money for the store and studio, which is where they recorded their last release, Red Future.
The album focused around themes of Indigenous futurism and featured collaborations with Sebastian Gaskin, Princess Nokia and more. Red Future won the rappers their first ever Juno Award in March for rap album/EP of the year, and they performed live during the broadcast in Vancouver.

On the GoFundMe page, they wrote that they had lost all of their recording equipment, soundproofing panels and "everything you would need to run a recording studio."
"If you want to offer a donation to support us getting through this and building these places back up, you can do so through the link in our bio. Either way, all love and I guess it's only up from here," they concluded in their Instagram post.
As of April 28, more than $15, 000 has been raised.

Taylor Swift announces new album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl'

Look what you made her do — Taylor Swift has revealed a brand new era with the announcement of her upcoming 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Swift announced the album with the help of her boyfriend Travis Kelce, 35, and his brother Jason Kelce, 37, on their podcast, New Heights. In a clip shared on Instagram at 12:12 a.m. ET on Tuesday, Swift said, 'I wanted to show you something.' 'OK, what do we got?' Jason asked. 'A briefcase, mint green with T.S. on it. What's in it?' 'This is my brand-new album, The Life of a Showgirl,' Swift said as she held up the blurred-out vinyl. 'T.S. 12,' Travis cheered. Story continues below advertisement The 35-year-old singer also announced the album on her website shortly after a countdown timer expired at 12:12 a.m. Tuesday. No release date was announced, but her website said vinyl editions of the album would ship before Oct. 13. Fans have long theorized that Swift's 12th album would soon arrive. On Monday, Taylor Nation — an official branch of the pop superstar's marketing team — posted a TikTok slide show of 12 images with the caption 'Thinking about when she said 'See you next era…'' Swift is seen wearing orange in every image. The album announcement came after it was confirmed that Swift would appear as a guest on her boyfriend's podcast on the episode released on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Story continues below advertisement In a teaser for the episode, Swift sat opposite Travis and looked at his shirt and said, 'That's such a nice colour on you.' 'Yes, I know. It's the colour of your eyes, sweetie. It's why we match so well,' he replied. 'We're about to do a f—ing podcast,' Swift said, smiling. Taylor's about to do a f*cking podcast! NEW EPISODE WEDS 7PM ET — New Heights (@newheightshow) August 12, 2025 The Life of a Showgirl follows last year's The Tortured Poets Department, announced during the 2024 Grammys and released during her record-breaking tour, which raked in more than US$2.2 billion across two years and five continents, making it the highest-grossing tour of all time. The album is also her first release since Swift regained control over her entire body of work. In May, the pop star said she purchased her catalogue of recordings — originally released through Big Machine Records — from their most recent owner, the private equity firm Shamrock Capital. She did not disclose the amount. Story continues below advertisement In recent years, Swift has been re-recording and releasing her albums in an attempt to regain control of her music. The project was instigated by Hybe America CEO Scooter Braun's purchase and sale of her early catalogue and represents Swift's effort to control her own songs and how they're used. Previous Taylor's Version releases have been more than conventional re-recordings, arriving with new 'from the vault' music, Easter eggs and visuals that deepen understanding of her work. So far, there have been four re-recorded albums, beginning with Fearless (Taylor's Version) and Red (Taylor's Version) in 2021. All four have been massive commercially, each one debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Swift's last re-recording, 1989 (Taylor's Version), arrived in October 2023, just four months after the release of Speak Now (Taylor's Version). That was the same year Swift claimed the record for the woman with the most No. 1 albums in history. — with files from The Associated Press

Taylor Swift announces new album called The Life of a Showgirl

Superstar Taylor Swift on Tuesday announced her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl. Swift, who has won 14 Grammys, including an unprecedented four trophies for album of the year, announced the album in a podcast episode with her boyfriend and NFL star, Travis Kelce, and his brother, Jason Kelce. "This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl," Swift said while holding a blurred-out version of the album cover, in a clip of the New Heights podcast on Instagram. The full podcast episode is set to release at 7 p.m. ET. Swift's website said the official release date of the album would be announced later. The vinyl version of the album is available for pre-order on Swift's website at $30 US. The cassette version costs $20, and a CD with a poster of Swift is available for $13. The megastar, whose record-breaking Eras tour was the first to surpass $1 billion US in revenue, announced the album after she purchased the master recordings of her first six albums in May, giving her control of all of her music after a dispute with her former record label. Swift's last album The Tortured Poets Department sold 2.61 million albums and streaming units during its first week of release in the U.S., with Billboard scoring it the largest streaming week for an album ever and the largest sales week for an album on vinyl in the modern era. Spotify said Poets was its most-streamed album in a single week, surpassing 1 billion streams. She is among several of music's top artists releasing albums recently. Fellow pop artist Sabrina Carpenter will release Man's Best Friend in August, while singer Ed Sheeran is releasing an album in September. Swift, 35, has been setting music industry milestones and boosting local economies with The Eras Tour, a phenomenon that some economists have termed "Swiftflation."
