SIBU (April 22): The Sarawak government regards Chinese independent schools as key partners in delivering quality education — not alternatives or exceptions, but vital pillars of the state's education landscape, said Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
The Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development said this in his closing speech for the Town Hall Meeting with Sarawak Chinese independent schools at SM Wong Nai Siong here today.
'Let me be very clear, Sarawak Chinese independent schools are not outsiders. You are not an afterthought. You are, and will continue to be, an integral part of the education ecosystem in Malaysia,' he said, stressing the state's inclusive approach to education and its recognition of diverse schooling models.
Sagah reiterated that while education falls under the Federal Constitution, Sarawak remains committed to inclusive policies and meaningful collaboration that reflect the state's unique educational landscape.
'We understand the challenges Chinese independent schools face. Through our ministry, we will continue to find ways to support and work together as one big family. Rest assured, you are part of Sarawak's education system, and we won't leave you out. You are always on our radar, ' he stated.
He said education in Sarawak cannot follow a one-size-fits-all model, but must reflect the state's multicultural, multilingual, and multi-system reality.
'We may come from different schooling systems and frameworks, but we all share the same goal — to uplift the standard of education for our young Sarawakians.
'Today's dialogue has been more than just a meeting — it has been a reaffirmation of our shared values,' he said.
Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese Secondary Schools Management Board chairman Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming said the minister's message reflected a more inclusive direction.
The town hall addressed various challenges faced by Chinese independent schools from funding to curriculum development and greater recognition of their role in shaping the next generation.
Among those present were Deputy Ministers of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis and Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, as well as representatives from Yayasan Sarawak, Sarawak State Education Department, and district-level officials. lead Roland Sagah Wee Inn Sarawak Chinese independent schools

Anwar allowed interim stay, June 16 civil suit vacated

Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: V Anbalagan Text Size: The Court of Appeal said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had shown special circumstances justifying the grant of a stay of the trial. PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has granted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim an ad-interim stay of a civil suit brought by a former research assistant over an alleged assault. The temporary stay is pending a full hearing of the prime minister's application, which will take place on July 21. Advertisement A three-member bench chaired by Justice Supang Lian said Anwar had shown special circumstances to justify the grant of the application. 'We are of the considered view that under Section 44 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, we are empowered to make an ad-interim order to preserve the integrity of the appellant's (Anwar) stay. 'Accordingly, the trial in the High Court will be stayed pending the disposal of the stay application,' said Supang. Also on the panel hearing the application were Justices Faizah Jamaludin and Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin. The bench also clarified that parties need not exchange witness statements on Friday (June 13) as directed by High Court judge Roz Mawar Rozain last week, given today's decision. The trial of the suit was scheduled to take place before Roz Mawar over seven days between June 16 and June 25 after she dismissed Anwar's reference application on grounds that none of the questions posed succeeded in crossing the threshold set out in Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act. In her 21-page judgment, she said the application was misconceived as to the jurisdiction of the courts, and was based on speculative doctrines with no constitutional footing. The prime minister wanted the apex court to rule on whether Articles 5(1), 8(1), 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from the suit filed by Yusoff Rawther four years ago. The suit filed by Yusoff relates to events which allegedly took place before Anwar took office on Nov 24, 2022. Anwar is appealing to the Court of Appeal against Roz Mawar's refusal to refer eight legal questions arising from the suit to the Federal Court for determination. He is seeking a stay of all proceedings pending the disposal of the appeal. Yusoff, a grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, claims he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit. Today, before the bench, lawyer Alan Wong, appearing for Anwar, said the appeal against Roz Mawar's decision would be rendered academic and nugatory if the interim stay was disallowed. 'There is no prejudice to the plaintiff if the trial is suspended. He can be compensated in the event that the plaintiff proves his case,' he added. He said the seven-day trial would also disrupt and cause irreversible harm to the prime minister's executive function. 'It is not an ordinary suit but one laced with political motive,' he added. Counsel Rafique Rashid Ali submitted that the appeal on the reference questions was doomed to fail as they were rhetorical and had no basis in Malaysian jurisprudence. He also said the defendant knew the trial dates as they were fixed on June 6 last year. 'Yet he filed the reference application 23 days before the trial was to start through his new solicitors,' Rafique said, adding that his client should have his day in court as the suit was filed in 2021. Lawyers Shahir Tahir, K Rajasegaran, and SM Kavyaasrini also appeared for Anwar while Nurmustanir Nor and Amirul Ar-Rashid Azman acted for Yusoff. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Xi urges South Korea's Lee to help safeguard free trade in call

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping (pic) held his first phone conversation with South Korea's newly elected President Lee Jae-myung and called for cooperation to safeguard multilateralism and free trade. Xi made the remarks in a phone call with Lee, state-run Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television reported. Lee earlier said he was set to speak with Xi by phone on Tuesday (June 10). "We should strengthen bilateral cooperation and multilateral coordination, jointly safeguard multilateralism and free trade, and ensure the stability and smoothness of global and regional industrial chains and supply chains,' Xi said, according to the CCTV report. Xi said the two countries should promote their strategic partnership to a higher level and "inject more certainty' into the regional and international landscape, the reports said. The new South Korean leader has signalled a more cautious stance on the US-China rivalry, marking a shift from predecessor Yoon Suk-yeol's foreign policy, which emphasised closer ties with Washington and a trilateral partnership with Japan. - Bloomberg

Two Chinese aircraft carriers seen in Pacific for first time: Tokyo

TOKYO: Japan said Tuesday (June 10) that two Chinese aircraft carriers had been seen operating in the Pacific for the first time as Beijing boosts its military capability in far-flung areas. On Monday (June 9), China's Shandong carrier and four other vessels, including a missile destroyer, sailed inside the Japanese economic waters surrounding the remote Pacific atoll of Okinotori, Tokyo's defence ministry said. Its fighter jets and helicopters conducted take-offs and landings there, the ministry said. The fleet of five warships was also seen sailing on Saturday 550km southeast of Miyako Island near Taiwan, it added. China's other operational aircraft carrier Liaoning (pic) and its fleet entered Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Pacific over the weekend, before exiting to conduct drills involving fighter jets, Tokyo previously said. "This is the first time two Chinese aircraft carriers were spotted operating in the Pacific at the same time," a defence ministry spokesman told AFP on Tuesday. "We believe the Chinese military's purpose is to improve its operational capability and ability to conduct operations in distant areas," he said. China's use of naval and air assets to press its territorial claims has rattled the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region. Japanese and US defence officials say China wants to push the American military out of the so-called "first island chain" from Japan down through the Philippines. Eventually, its strategy is to dominate areas west of the "second island chain" in the Pacific between Japan's remote Ogasawara Islands and the US territory of Guam, they say. The Liaoning's recent cruise eastwards marked the first time the Japanese defence ministry has said a Chinese aircraft carrier had crossed the second island chain. In September, the warship sailed between two Japanese islands near Taiwan and entered Japan's contiguous waters, an area up to 24 nautical miles from its coast. At the time, Tokyo called that move "unacceptable" and expressed "serious concerns" to Beijing. Under international law, a state has rights to the management of natural resources and other economic activities within its EEZ, which is within 200 nautical miles (370km) of its coastline. - AFP
