Ben Platt shows support for Palestine and shares alienation from community on social media
Tony Award-winning actor and singer Ben Platt has recently voiced support for Palestinian rights, sharing posts on social media that align him with pro-Palestinian activists and expressing subtle tensions with his pro-Israel family.
Platt reposted comedian Hannah Einbinder's recent speech condemning Israel's actions in Gaza on his Instagram Story. In his post, he praised her words and referenced feeling alienated from his own community's political stance. While Platt did not name family members directly, his father, Marc Platt, is a high-profile Hollywood producer with known pro-Israel affiliations.
Platt also used his Instagram story to mention Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and Columbia University graduate who was recently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Khalil's arrest has drawn attention from human rights advocates and campus activists across the country. Platt's post appeared to signal solidarity with Khalil, although he did not elaborate further.
These expressions of support represent a rare public stance from the 'Dear Evan Hansen' star, especially in light of his family's political leanings. Platt's engagement reflects a broader generational divide within American Jewish communities, with younger figures increasingly critical of Israel's military actions in Gaza and occupation of Palestinian territories.
Platt has not issued a full statement or clarified his views beyond the social media posts. However, his willingness to elevate voices like Einbinder's and Khalil's places him among a growing number of public figures cautiously engaging in discourse around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
As debate over Gaza intensifies, Platt's posts illustrate how personal identity, family history, and public responsibility often intersect in complicated ways for high-profile entertainers.

UNGA demands immediate Gaza ceasefire
The vote by the 193-member General Assembly was a global survey of support for the Palestinian bid to become a full UN member. PHOTO: REUTERS The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution, by overwhelmingly majority, demanding an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Israel's war in Gaza and aid access, after the United States vetoed a similar effort in the Security Council last week. Piloted by Spain, the resolution, co-sponsored by Pakistan and 47 other states, garnered 149 votes in favour to 12 against, with 19 abstentions. Among those opposing the resolution were the United States and Israel, who were joined, among others, by Argentina, Hungary and Paraguay. India, Georgia, Ecuador, Romania and Ethiopia were among the countries abstaining. Under its terms, the resolution strongly condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war, demands a full lifting of the Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid, and insists on the protection of civilians under international law. Although General Assembly resolutions are not legally binding, they carry significant political and moral weight. Meanwhile, famine conditions continue to threaten lives across Gaza, and reports persist of civilians being killed or injured while trying to access food at distribution points operated independently of the UN but supported by Israel and the US. "We meet here on the 614th day of a full-fledged assault against the Palestinian people," underscored the Palestinian Ambassado to the UN Riyad Mansour. "This illegal, immoral situation cannot continue; it has to stop and stop immediately," he said, pointing to Israel's siege against Palestine — "where over 2 million people have been subjected to relentless bombardments, wanton destruction and engineered starvation".
