Messi notched up his 764th non-penalty goal to go past Portuguese talisman Ronaldo's record. Remarkably, Messi achieved the feat in 167 fewer games.
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi surpassed long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo's record for most non-penalty goals following his brace for Inter Miami and NY Red Bulls in the MLS on Sunday.
Messi notched up his 764th non-penalty goal in his illustrious career to surpass the Portuguese talisman Ronaldo's record of 763 strikes. Remarkably, the World Cup-winner achieved the feat in 167 fewer games.
True GOAT
Messi netted a brace, his sixth in the previous seven MLS games, against NY Red Bulls on Monday as the Herons coasted to a 5-1 win over the hosts at the Red Bull Arena.
Messi levelled Ronaldo's record with his first strike of the day in the 60th minute of the game, before shattering the Portuguese player's tally with his second of the day in the 75th minute as he helped his side over the line.
Messi pulled off a trademark run to get past the opposition defensive setup, in addition to rounding the keeper, before slotting the ball into the empty net as he gave the Hernons a 4-1 lead. He put the last nail in NY's coffin as he brought down a cross into the area with his chest before guiding it past a hapless custodian to make it 5-1.
The win helped Miami bounce back from a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Cincinnati, in which Messi's run of braces in five-straight game was snipped.
Messi became the first player in league history to score more than one goal in five consecutive regular-season matches, thanks to his brace against Nashville. The Argentine World Cup winner opened the scoring with a free kick in the first half, giving the Miami-based team a slim one-goal lead at halftime. However, Nashville equalized early in the second half through Mukhtar, leveling the score against David Beckham's side.
Messi ensured that the Herons secured all three points by intercepting a pass from the opposition goalkeeper, rounding him, and slotting the ball into the net past a sliding defender.
Messi's streak of scoring two goals in a match began with Miami's 4-2 victory over Montreal and continued with his double against Columbus in a 5-1 win. The Argentine World Cup winner maintained his form upon returning to MLS action after the team's participation in the revamped edition of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. He scored twice again in Miami's 4-1 triumph over Montreal before his performance against New England Revolution, where he netted twice in a 2-1 win.

MS Dhoni confirms CSK captain for IPL 2026, concedes major squad issues

Legendary Chennai Super Kings cricketer MS Dhoni confirmed the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad as the captain of the franchise in Indian Premier League 2026. Speaking on a private event in Chennai on Saturday, August 2, Dhoni said that CSK opener will return to the side and take over his usual Dhoni was forced to take over CSK's captaincy from Gaikwad due to the latter's injury in the IPL 2025. Gaikwad fractured his arm early in the tournament, one that went terribly for the Chennai-based at the event, Dhoni admitted to the team's issues from IPL 2025 and said that they were going to strengthen their batting order. The comment perhaps indicates that the franchise will be moving on from Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda, who were woeful last season. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now,' said Dhoni during a private function in Chennai.'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in,' he last competitive outing remains CSK's match against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur on April 8. The Maharashtrian had inked a deal with English county Yorkshire but withdrew from the deal citing personal reasons. However, he has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, beginning later this admitted that the Super Kings have been well below-par over the last two seasons, but said it was important for the team to identify those grey areas.'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also.'We were like, okay, there are some shortcomings. But first we needed to exactly figure out what were the shortcomings and then look at solutions,' he Dhoni Thanks Loyal FansDhoni profusely thanked the loyal CSK fans for their wholehearted support during the strife time, and promised to give a better account of themselves in the coming season.'I feel more often than not we have been able to figure out what exactly went wrong. In sports, you know you can have a very good time and at the same time there will be periods when you won't be performing well. In CSK, more often than not, we are on the higher we do talk about the processes. But at the same time we do want the result to come to our side. Last year it (result) wasn't there. But looking ahead, we will try to sort out most of the things and we will hopefully be at our best,' he 44-year-old then underlined the strong relationship he has fostered over the years with Chennai and the IPL team based in the city.'It's a very long relationship that we have had and it started much before the start of IPL... 2005 was the time when I made my Test debut which happened to be in Chennai. So, it started from that point of time. And yes, CSK helped in a big way because all of a sudden I'm spending 45-50 days here."'So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. So, CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also. Nowadays when we go and say CSK, it's not a brand only in India, but when we go to Australia, South Africa, or any of the cricket playing nations,' he noted.- EndsMust Watch

Will Brazil's Neymar Jr. get one final go at the FIFA World Cup in 2026?

As the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup ticks on, one of Brazil's biggest footballing questions still hangs in the air: Will Neymar be there? Once seen as the face of Brazilian football's future, Neymar's recent years have been plagued by injuries, inconsistency, and speculation. Yet, his raw talent continues to inspire belief among the Seleção faithful. Rodrigo Caetano, director of selections at the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), recently addressed the topic in an interview with ESPN. His message was clear: if Neymar is fit, there's no question about his place in the squad. 'There is always room for a good player' 'There is no doubt that he is a technical exponent of the generation and the Brazilian national team. It is unanimous that, if he is in clinical and physical conditions, the technique is indisputable. And there is always room for a good player, especially one that is exceptional,' Caetano said. While Neymar's brilliance on the pitch remains undisputed, his availability is the concern clouding his World Cup prospects. He featured in just 4 of Brazil's 16 World Cup Qualifier matches, a glaring statistic for a player of his stature. His most persistent battle has been with his body. Knee injuries, ankle problems, and recurring knocks have limited his ability to string together consistent playing time since 2022. For fans and coaches alike, it's not a matter of whether Neymar can deliver, it's whether he will be there to do so. A Glimmer of Hope at Santos Since rejoining Santos, Neymar has shown glimpses of his old magic. Encouragingly, he has started, and completed, four consecutive matches, a streak not seen in years. During this run, he scored a goal in a famous win over Flamengo and led from the front, despite mixed team results. The fact that he's avoiding substitutions and absorbing full-match pressure suggests that his rehabilitation may finally be turning a corner. Starter or Super Sub? If Neymar maintains fitness, he's almost guaranteed a place in Brazil's 2026 squad. Whether he starts remains to be seen. With a new generation of attacking talent like Rodrygo, Endrick, and Vinícius Jr., rising through the ranks, Neymar might evolve into a deeper role, possibly as a No. 10 or second striker, where his creativity and vision can be maximized without the physical demands of a winger. 'For a player to technically stand out, if he is technically well, the issue of talent stands out in relation to the others. Which is the case with him.' Neymar's path to 2026 is still uncertain. But as long as there's a ball at his feet and hope in his legs, Brazil will be watching.
