Iberia investigates ‘Free Palestine' message on kosher meals
The incident occurred on a flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid, where several other Jewish passengers reportedly found their meal trays labeled with the initials 'FP,' standing for 'Free Palestine.'
Argentina's Jewish umbrella organization, DAIA, condemned the incident as a 'serious act of antisemitism' and demanded immediate action from the airline. In a statement posted on X, DAIA said, 'We strongly condemn this discriminatory act and have contacted the airline authorities to demand explanations and immediate action.'
The post included a photo of a meal tray with a handwritten label reading 'Free Palestine.'
Kosher meals adhere to Jewish dietary laws, and the incident has raised concerns over discrimination. Iberia confirmed that passengers on the flight, which landed early Tuesday, reported 'handwritten pro-Palestinian messages' on their meal packaging.
The airline stated, 'The Iberia crew documented the incident and took action to assist those affected. The captain personally approached them to apologise on behalf of the airline.'
Iberia is conducting an internal investigation and coordinating with catering providers to determine how the labels were added.
The airline emphasized its stance against discrimination, stating it 'categorically rejects any form of discrimination, incitement to hatred, or behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals.'
This incident follows another controversy last month involving Jewish passengers on a Vueling flight from Valencia, Spain.
The airline removed dozens of French Jewish teenagers, citing disruptive behavior, including tampering with safety equipment.
Some parents, however, claimed the removal was antisemitic, alleging their children were expelled after one teen sang a Hebrew song. Vueling, like Iberia, is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG). - AFP

French backpacker found dead in canal
The body of a missing French backpacker has been found in Cambodia, police said, saying she is thought to have suffered a cardiac arrest. The 23-year-old, named by French media as Lisa Girard-Fabre, from southwest France, was found dead near Siem Reap, the main city for Cambodia's famed Angkor Wat temple complex. Lieutenant Colonel Sok Meng Eang from Siem Reap police said yesterday that the woman was found dead in a dried canal on Monday after she had been missing for two days. 'Police found her body in a dried canal near Siem Reap city yesterday,' he said. An autopsy found that she died from a cardiac arrest and her body has been given to the French Embassy, he said. 'There were no injuries on her body or any sign of abuse against her,' Sok Meng Eang said, adding that her belongings, including her phone, were found at the site and that her clothes were in good condition. French newspaper Depeche du Midi reported that the woman was partway through a trip attempting to go around the world without using airplane travel. She went missing after going running on her own, the paper said. — AFP

Ex-Arsenal player Partey in UK court charged with rape, sexual assault
LONDON: Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey appeared in a London court on Tuesday, charged with raping two women while he was a player for the English Premier League soccer club. Partey, a Ghana international, is accused of five counts of rape relating to two women, plus a charge of sexual assault against a third woman, between April 2021 and June 2022. The 32-year-old sat in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court dressed in black during the brief hearing and spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. Prosecutor Jocelyn Ledward said that two of the charges Partey faces relate to him allegedly anally raping one complainant during consensual sex on separate occasions. Three further charges relate to a second woman whom Partey is accused of raping on three occasions, twice in Britain and once in Spain. He was not asked to enter pleas to any of the charges. Partey was granted bail ahead of his next court appearance at London's Old Bailey court on September 2. His lawyer previously said in a statement that Partey denies the charges and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name. Partey was signed by Arsenal from Atletico Madrid for €50 million in 2020 and became a key member of the English side's first team, making 52 appearances in all competitions last season. He was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named at the time and continued to play for Arsenal while investigations were ongoing. His contract with the Premier League club expired last month. British media have reported Partey is close to joining Spanish side Villarreal on a free transfer and Judge Paul Goldspring said during Tuesday's hearing that Partey would soon be moving to Spain. - Reuters
