Can ExxonMobil Navigate Market Turbulence With Its Strong Balance Sheet?

Globe and Mail21 hours ago
Exxon Mobil Corporation XOM is one of the world's largest integrated energy companies with operations spanning upstream, downstream and chemicals. Like other oil and gas majors, ExxonMobil is exposed to commodity price volatility. However, the company's strong balance sheet provides resilience during periods of market uncertainty, allowing it to sustain operations and shareholder returns even when crude prices are under pressure.
With a debt-to-capitalization ratio of just 12.2%, ExxonMobil carries substantially less debt than the broader industry's 41.06%. At the end of the first quarter of 2025, ExxonMobil reported $30 billion in cash and marketable securities, reflecting a healthy liquidity position.
Coupled with diversified global operations and disciplined capital spending, ExxonMobil is well-positioned to generate robust cash flows and navigate commodity cycles effectively.
COP & CVX Also Have Healthy Balance Sheets
Like XOM, ConocoPhillips COP and Chevron Corporation CVX also have lower debt exposure.
The debt-to-capitalization of COP is 26.7%, while that of CVX is 16.5%. Thus, despite having significant exposure to exploration and production activities, both COP and Chevron can lean on their balance sheet to combat periods of low oil prices.
XOM's Price Performance, Valuation & Estimates
Shares of XOM have plunged 4.3% over the past year compared with the industry 's 2.3% decline.

From a valuation standpoint, XOM trades at a trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA (EV/EBITDA) of 6.93X. This is above the broader industry average of 4.36X.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for XOM's 2025 earnings has been revised upward over the past seven days.
XOM stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

Carney 'disappointed' by 35 per cent tariffs, vows to protect jobs

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his disappointment on Friday about U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to increase so-called 'fentanyl tariffs' to 35 per cent and said his government is committed to supporting the most affected sectors. Article content In a 'fact sheet' from the White House, the Trump administration defended its latest action by blaming Canada for reportedly failing to 'cooperate in curbing the ongoing flood of fentanyl' and for having retaliated against the U.S. since their original round of tariffs. Article content Article content Article content However, goods that qualify for 'preferential tariff treatment' under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico free trade agreement (CUSMA) continue to remain exempt from tariffs, it said. Article content Article content 'While the Canadian government is disappointed by this action, we remain committed to CUSMA, which is the world's second-largest free trade agreement by trading volume,' wrote Carney in a statement on X published shortly after midnight on Friday. Article content The prime minister added that the application of CUSMA means that the average tariff rate on Canadian goods going to the U.S. remains one of the lowest for all its trading partners. Article content However, he said other sectors of Canada's economy will remain heavily impacted by tariffs, he said. Steel and aluminum were already subject to 50 per cent tariffs, with copper now impacted by that same rate, but lumber and automobiles are also of great concern. Article content 'For such sectors, the Canadian government will act to protect Canadian jobs, invest in our industrial competitiveness, buy Canadian, and diversity our export markets,' he said. Article content Carney said despite the U.S. justifying its action on the flow of fentanyl, Canada accounts for only one per cent of U.S. fentanyl imports and 'has been working intensively to further reduce these volumes' with 'historic' investments for security at the border. Article content Carney did not announce a new deadline to conclude a new economic and security agreement with the U.S. and rather insisted on making Canada more self-reliant. Article content 'While we will continue to negotiate with the United States on our trading relationship, the Canadian government is laser focused on what we can control: building Canada strong,' he said, pointing to internal trade between provinces and the building of major projects. Article content 'Together, these initiatives have the potential to catalyse over half a trillion dollars of new investments in Canada,' he added. Article content Carney concluded his statement by saying Canadians will become their own best customers and create 'more well-paying careers at home' while the government continues to 'strengthen and diversify' its trading partnerships around the world.

Q2 profits at Exxon Mobil and Chevron dip to lowest level in 4 years on subdued energy prices

NEW YORK (AP) — Exxon Mobil's second-quarter profit dropped to the lowest level in four years and sales fell as oil prices slumped as OPEC+ ramped up production. The Texas oil driller still topped Wall Street profit expectations Friday and shares rose slightly before the opening bell, even with global markets falling on the erratic trade polices of the U.S. The price for a barrel of U.S. benchmark crude has remained below $70 for most of the year and in May, it was well below $60. Exxon earned $7.08 billion, or $1.64 per share, for the period ended June 30. A year earlier it earned $9.24 billion, or $2.14 per share. That was better than Wall Street expected, but Exxon does not adjust its reported results based on one-time events such as asset sales. Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research were calling for earnings of $1.49 per share. 'We achieved our highest second-quarter Upstream production since the merger of Exxon and Mobil more than 25 years ago," Chairman and CEO Darren Woods said, referring to the companys exploration and production operations. Exxon offset lower prices by ramping up production as well. Second-quarter net production was 4.6 million oil-equivalent barrels per day. That was an increase of 79,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day when compared with the first quarter. Revenue fell to $81.51 billion from $93.06 billion, missing the $82.82 billion that Wall Street was looking for. Chevron Corp. reported a second-quarter profit of $2.49 billion, or $1.45 per share. Removing one-time costs, earnings were $1.77 per share. That was also a four-year low for the second quarter, but it too beat Wall Street profit expectations and missed revenue expectations by industry analysts. Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research expected Chevron per-share earnings of $1.70. Chevron's quarterly revenue was $44.82 billion. In July eight members of the OPEC+ alliance of oil exporting countries said that they will boost production by 548,000 barrels per day in August in a decision that could further reduce gas prices this year. They cited a 'steady global economic outlook' and low oil inventories. Oil prices spiked sharply in June during the bloody, 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran but then tumbled back down as the U.S. helped broker a peace deal after dropping bombs on three of Iran's key nuclear sites.
