Fly infestation needs to be resolved
An MP has called for a public meeting with environment bosses to resolve a fly infestation and odour issue that has affected residents for more than two years.
Matt Western, Labour MP for Warwick and Leamington, first met constituents about the problem in September 2023, which many say originates from a recycling plant regulated by the Environment Agency (EA) near Leamington Spa.
Almost three years later, Western described himself as "beyond frustrated" that the issue persisted.
The recycling company and the EA said they were yet to find a substantial link between the odour and any site.
People living in Heathcote and Whitnash, to the south of Leamington, have blamed the issues on a nearby recycling plant owned by Amcor, formerly known as Berry Circular Polymers.
Western recently raised their concerns in parliament with Mary Creagh, a junior secretary in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
He said residents could not be "continuously dismissed" when there was "very obviously a problem" and added he was applying for an adjournment debate on the matter.
Local residents have formed a Facebook group, Residents Against Pollution and Industrial Damage (RAPID), to encourage reports of flies and foul smells.
A spokesperson said: "I don't know what our confidence levels are like, however I can say we are not giving up".
They added Western had represented "thousands of residents" in the Commons and it was "a great way to get the message across".
"It's about time the EA and the government looked at this," they added.
An EA spokesperson said sites in the Leamington Spa area were "regularly inspected" and "operators made improvements where they were required".
"We are committed to ensuring that people and the environment are protected," they added.
Amcor said its Leamington Spa site was "compliant with the EA" and that it worked closely with the agency to make improvements.

Volunteers 'devastated' at garden centre closure
Learning disabled volunteers and their families say they are "devastated" a west London community garden centre is set to be closed down. More than 4,500 have signed a petition urging the Hillingdon Council to keep the Rural Activities Garden Centre (RAGC) in Colham open. A group of learning disabled adults help maintain the garden centre, and some have attended for decades and see it as a critical part of their routine, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Hillingdon Council says the centre is making an annual loss of £137,000 a year which is being subsidised by local taxpayers and and volunteers will be offered alternative "learning and developmental opportunities". Terry, who has been volunteering at the garden centre for several years, said he had "stopped leaving the house" before he began working there. Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, he said: "My mum got ill with dementia and I had to look after her, when she died I was suggested to come here, it's now the only place I come to. "If this place closes I won't be doing anything again, it makes me upset." Wayne, a volunteer of over 30 years at the RAGC, says he loves the work and the people he works with. His father Stuart says it is the "one thing that gives them a purpose in life". Without it, he says, many volunteers would be "stuck at home". "All of these people will be devastated," he added. "We all need this place, what it does for people, and the community it brings. We need it." Hillingdon Council says it will continue supporting volunteers by offering horticultural placements in gardens and public areas around the borough's Civic Centre in Uxbridge. The local authority says this will provide "enriched learning and developmental opportunities" and "a wider range of activities than they currently experience at the garden centre". The report on the future of the Rural Activities Garden Centre is due to be will be considered by the council's Cabinet on 26 June. Hillingdon Council said: "We are committed to ensuring all volunteers with assessed social care needs receive enriched learning and developmental opportunities. "Unfortunately, the RAGC's retail operations are not economically viable and we cannot expect residents to subsidise a loss-making garden centre." Pub's wooden chalet destroyed in fire
A fire has destroyed a pub's chalet after it ripped through the building. Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the Malt Shovel Pub in Highley on Saturday at about 00:12 BST. Pictures posted on the fire service's Facebook page show firefighters extinguishing glowing red and orange wood. Three crews from Bridgnorth, Kidderminster and Cleobury Mortimer were sent to the blaze and discovered the remains of a wooden chalet, a spokesperson added. New Geneo Mall food court's loaded mala bowls, pan-fried buns, $10 steak & more
A 5-minute walk through lush greenery from the main area of Geneo Mall brings you to a brightly-lit and minimalistic 10-stall food court — Hawkerlab — featuring a range of cuisines from Shanghainese to Western, to Vietnamese. This quiet food court at 7 Science Park Drive opened in 2024. However, there hasn't been much hoo-ha about it since, likely because most of their patrons are nearby office workers or tenants. By the time I visited at half past 1 on a Thursday, only a handful of people were still sitting around. The food court has a clean, uniform look with all-white chairs and marbled tables. Lots of natural light is let in through the large window panes along the side, adding to its cosy, serene dining experience away from the hustle and bustle of work. 'If it's out of the way, why should I eat here?' Trust me, Hawkerlab is unlike any regular food court, and after seeing the food selection, you'll know why. All Things Mala is one of the newest tenants in this food court, having shifted here in May 2025. Unlike the usual mala affair of picking out your ingredients from the displayed chiller, every bowl here has a fixed combination, most of which come in individual portions below S$10. We tried the Signature Mala Chicken Bowl (S$8.90) and Fiery Beef King Bowl (S$9.90), and both consisted of springy instant noodles (the best part of mala, always), packed with their respective proteins and a load of veggies. Crowning the bowl were strips of what the owner, Kuan Loong, described as 'yusheng crispies'. Kuan Loong shared that they 'cut down oil by a lot' when frying the mala xiang guo, so you can worry less about the calories. However, I would still highly recommend their Crispy Mochi Youtiao with Condensed Milk (S$3.50) for a sweet treat after. Sheng jian bao in Hawkerlab? Sign me up. OLD CHANG SHENG JIAN BAO 老张生煎 serves a range of authentic pan-fried buns and Chinese noodles, but customers say their Signature Pork Pan-fried bun (S$5.50 for 4pcs) is a must-get. This would easily be my go-to lunch fix if I worked in the area. Steak is one of those foods most people tend to reserve for special affairs, enjoying it as an occasional indulgence. But here at Western Food Shack by The Tea Party, you can get a Sirloin Beef Steak with a side of either Mash Potato + Coleslaw + Sweet Corn (S$10.90), or Aglio Olio Pasta (S$9.90). For this price, I'd be eating steak every day. Next time I'm here, I'd like to try the cai fan stall hilariously named '这个那个 (zhe ge na ge)' or This N That in English, poking fun at the way Singaporeans order their cai fan. (I'm guilty of this too) There's still a variety of warm beef pho, fusion salad bowls, and old-school ice cream left for you to come down and discover for yourself here at Hawkerlab.
