Children often having say in home move choices
Men (32%) are more likely than women (25%) to take the lead on the home moving process itself, according to the research, commissioned by Zoopla.
Male movers are more likely to take the lead in setting a budget (33% versus 19%), deciding on the mortgage (34% versus 17%) and arranging conveyancing (38% versus 24%) than women, the survey indicated.
Men also tend to lead in negotiations, with 36% taking charge of the house price negotiations compared with 20% of women.
Women are more likely to voice a dislike or reject a property (57% versus 43%) than men, the research found.
When it comes to making compromises, 31% of men feel they more frequently make concessions, versus 25% of women.
Zoopla commissioned Opinium to survey 2,000 adults across the UK in July and August who live with someone else in their household and have made at least one house move.
Daniel Copley, a consumer expert at Zoopla, said: 'For a significant portion of the market, the family home is truly a family decision. Understanding these nuanced dynamics is invaluable and it underscores the importance of open communication for a smoother, happier house hunt.'
Nigel Bishop, founder of buying agency Recoco Property Search, said that, in particular: 'Families with young children, who would spend their childhood and teenage years growing up at the property, value the opinion of their offspring.'
Mary-Lou Press, an estate agent and president of NAEA (National Association of Estate Agents) Propertymark said: 'A home move can have a huge impact on an entire family, such as school, college and university relocations, as well as longer commutes to a place of work – a move needs to be right for everyone.
'Therefore, it is positive to see that the children of many families are playing a key role in the final decision-making process for their next family home, which is more likely to lead to a happier and more successful future for everyone involved.
'Personally, in my professional opinion, I have noted that women tend to lead the general home buying and selling process.'

Newcastle wanted to sign Ekitiké to replace Callum Wilson and pushed to agree a fee. Then the Reds waltzed in and snapped him up. They turned their attention to Benjamin Sesko and then lost out to Man United after a long, long saga. And all of this with Alexander Isak kicking up a fuss in the background. But it turns out that Ekitiké isn't actually the only player Newcastle have missed out on to Liverpool. There's now a second. Newcastle wanted Giovanni Leoni Paul Joyce in The Times writes that Newcastle did make a push to sign Giovanni Leoni before he agreed a move to Liverpool. They went as far as bidding to Parma for the talented teenager. But Leoni picked Liverpool, much as Ekitiké did. A difference-maker was the fact the Reds were able to show a clear path to the first-team. And there's certainly that. Ibrahima Konate's contract expires in a year, while Virgil van Dijk is now 34. Leoni simply needs to keep developing at the level he has been and there's a regular starting role just waiting for him. This, however, will be a massive blow to Newcastle once again. They just haven't had their way in this window whatsoever and it might actually get worse. Isak remains eager to leave and Liverpool remain eager to buy. Newcastle have two more weeks to make a massive decision - and it could well see yet another star heading to Merseyside over Tyneside.

Hearing set for decision on late-night venue's expansion after delay over fire service concerns
A decision is finally set to be reached over whether a late-night venue in Bearwood can expand its business. Windsor Complex in Bearwood had applied to Sandwell Council for permission to change its licence as part of plans to open new snooker and pool rooms and a function room. However, West Midlands Fire Service had raised safety concerns over the plans and it was decided to delay a decision to allow for the owners to carry out any remaining work to satisfy the fire service and building regulations. The application for the Windsor Complex asked for permission to add indoor sporting events to its licence as well as extending the area where alcohol can be sold to the whole venue – including the upper floors where a new function room and snooker and pool room would be added. West Midlands Fire Service said the Bearwood Road venue had failed to provide it with proof it had made changes agreed when the licence was changed a year ago. This was 'despite chasing [it] on several occasions,' the fire service said. The agreement also stated the venue would use its newly extended opening hours until the fire service had been notified. The agreement signed in May 2024 by the venue also said the upper floors of the venue would not be used until the 'building [had] been completed in accordance with a suitable building regulations application' which the fire service said it had also not received any proof. The application read with the same statement used in 2024: 'The premises has always had a positive impact on the community, which includes employees, suppliers, customers, the environment, and the people in the local area. It will always show due diligence to the licensing objectives and ensure it is run in an efficient and safe manner.' The Windsor Complex was handed a late-night licence by Sandwell Council last year despite protests from neighbours. The venue, home to an Indian grill, bowling alley and arcade, was given permission to open until 3.30am despite several neighbours saying their lives had been plagued by loud noise and drunk and rowdy behaviour coming from the Bearwood venue. The objectors to the plans have listed a catalogue of concerns ranging from antisocial behaviour to fly-tipping, broken glass, urinating in streets and constant loud music. The objections, which were published in redacted form by Sandwell Council ahead of the meeting, said the late-night hours were 'unnecessary.'
